Let''s also remember that Jude and his missus are English, despite working in Hollywood. Big rocks are not part and parcel of the engagement process in England, no matter how big your wallet is. A huge proportion of the English people I know, particularly Londonders, would be over the moon with a super-white one-carat ring -- and these are people whose partners earn six-figure salaries etc. etc.

I believe that pricey clothing is more of a priority for the British. Just walk down Fifth Avenue these days and you''ll be confronted with a sea of Brits in their fancy togs stocking up on Seven jeans and Celine handbags. The Italians are the same (gold wedding bands only; more Gucci than you can shake a stick at).

Certainly true - most E-rings you''ll see around Great Britain are around the 1/4 - 1.5ct sized, and of the higher weights, on average are more made by a combination of smaller stones in a ring, rather than one large stone.

I seem to remember reading somewhere - Daily newspaper i think - that the national average sized diamond E-ring is about 50 - 75points

I always wanted to know- Is it two months salary before OR after taxes and other deductions?
No answer to the salary question? Oh DeBeers and theoir "brilliant" marketing campaign!

Hopefully most people are spending wisely instead of falling for the two-month rule.

Absolutely. I love browsing through Hello! and OK- there are often newly engaged celeb couples showing of the ring, and I ALWAYS think, "Is that it!!!!"

The rich and famous will always be criticised for what they do. Spend $30k on a ring and they are considered ''cheap''. Yet how many times are they bagged for spending lots of money - people crap on about how they have no shame and how dare they spend such an obscene amount of money blah blah blah...

i find these people really distasteful
I must say, WS, I couldn''t agree more. I am not a big celebrity watcher becuase they all seem to live in a dream world. I guess to a degree, they can''t help it, but at least some people, like Oprah for example, try to help others/stay somewhat grounded. These ding dongs who float from one "marriage" to another make me sick.
