Hi, I have never made this big of a jewelery purchase before and I was hoping someone could give me some referals to jewelers in the Chicago area (city and suburbs). This is for an engagement ring. I would like a jeweler that is fair in price and will help with the search process.

A co-worker recommended New York Jewelers on Wabash. She got her engagement ring and wedding bands from there. I''ve never bought anything from them, so I can''t really give you first hand knowledge of their diamond selection. My fiance and I did go there to look at their wedding bands though. We''ll probably get his from there since the price was pretty reasonable for the ring he wanted.

Randy at Goldin''s jewelers on Michigan Ave was great. He brought in many stones per my specifications for me to consider. Goldin''s is a totally different sort of jeweler...no cases to browse. You sit at a desk and describe what you want and they bring you boxes of rings or bring out individual stones. If you call ahead, they will make sure to have a good selection of the type of stone you want. Good luck!

I got my engagement ring from NYJewelers, as did one of my best friends. We both got decent stones at a more or less decent price but the workmanship on the rings was horrible. I was young and ignorant and didn't realize for a while just how bad it was. She did and made them re-do the ring three times before she was satisfied. You can probably do better.
For my upcoming eternity band, I have switched to Dimend Scaasi (5 South Wabash, 17th floor), based on reviews I read here. I don't have the ring in hand yet but my experience so far has been very favorable.

Edited to say: Sorry but I neglected to mention that I got my e-ring more than 10 years ago so my information may not be particularly relevant. I just never got over the feeling that my (then) ignorance may have been taken advantage of just a little...

my friend told me his horror story of NY Jewelers when they were under their old management years ago (that manager died of a heartattack on the floor). i''ve heard they''ve been better since, but yah... karma...

a lot of ps''ers have recommended dimend scassi. i got my diamond online and then got the setting at james and sons.
