Hi

I was hoping to start a thread and see if people could chime in with the worst cut gemstones they've encountered. I thought it would be an educational and potentially entertaining exercise for everyone!

Personally I found this one...looks like a lopsided pancake!!

 It certainly is something of a pancake. However I would hope that PSers don't buy these after the education available here - they are all over ebay! What you also might find interesting is a thread LD started on the "less than perfect" gems people bought and their reasons for keeping them, despite the constant search for perfection ;)) https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/show-me-your-less-than-perfect-gems.171747/

Oh I loved so many of the "less than perfect" gems! They were really unique and different and interesting and had character.

But yeah, here on pricescope I think we can all agree that poorly cut gems are ALWAYS a tragedy!!

Too many examples of horribly (beyond poorly) cut stones on eBay to list.

Oh chrono, you weren't kidding... I came across this...unique piece described as a "Half Moon" cut:

"This is not the shape or color for everyone, but if you are like me and appreciate something a little different and beautiful, you will love this stone."

What on earth would you do it? The seller states that it can be used in jewelry...Can't really imagine that.

With some fancy metal work, I can see it used in a pendant.

Or as an accent stone against a designer cab.

bugs, you should contact that seller, Im sure he will have an opinion about it...I mean he or she...because ebay sellers cannot discuss their stones on PS

It is indeed Chris's stone. I've looked at that one myself and thought "HUH??"

Hahaha, would you care to Speculate or hypothesize on what someone's intent might have been with a stone that shape? ;D

It is unfair to ask Chris this question here because he is withheld by the forum rules. If genuinely curious, just ask him via ebay's messaging system. ::)

:nono:

The stones I always find the most unattractive are giant step cut aquamarines that have windows so HUGE that you can hardly see any color in them whatsoever. I seem to attract them - I've had no less than 4 people ask me about their SPECTACULAR new ring, only to be shown the dreaded fishtank aquamarine. :knockout:

  Oh dear - it does seem to happen a lot with aquamarines doesn't it?

Ack! You lot just aren't trying...how about
13 GEM GRADE FACETED CANARY WHITE GENUINE DIAMOND BEADS 2.09cts L VS2 AAAAA+
http://www.ebay.com/itm/13-GEM-GRAD...2338631?pt=Loose_Diamonds&hash=item589683bf47

Hmmm...canary or white? And they're tiny! Sizes: 2mm - 2.8mm
But hey!
They're very rare!

Off to bed to sleep on it

I've seen funky pendants with half moon cut stones.

Justginger, I know exactly the type of ring you mean!

Yeah, that half-moon/partial-round is an unusual shape that doesn't do it for me, but I wouldn't call it poorly cut. The lopsided pancake, on the other hand, makes me sad.

Starzin,
Those are 5A+ too. They must be special indeed to be both canary and white at the same time.

I kinda like them, but then again I've been known to have some odd ideas regarding my jewelry. :cheeky:

edited to say: Eclectic. That's better than odd. Yep, that's me.

Uppy,
Those aren't the least bit ugly; I only have an issue with the description. With the right outfit, I think it can be worn attractively.

I'm also craving some strings of small ruby rhondelles or emeralds, about 3-5 strands each. They would go better with my style than formal necklaces or traditional pendants.

Sorry, I was just trying to make a bad joke ala the way you see these types of obviously disallowed questions asked on courtroom dramas, like law and order.

Is anyone having problems with no longer getting e-mail notifications of updated to this thread? I'm subscribed to it and there's been a bunch of replies but no emails. I was getting emails to begin with, and I'm still getting them on other threads....

I posted a bug report in the 'Suggestions' forum, hope this was the right place, can't really find a 'Technical PRoblems' report form or anything??

Oh, obviously that went over my head.

Order! Order! (bangs away with gravel)

I don't know; I've never subscribed to any threads. You can "report" this thread to the moderators and list the subject as "other".

See, now I like diamond beads and briolettes. In fact I would love to have a whole stand of them ( so long as they were clear enough to sparkle). ETA: She is a really nice seller too. I bought a nice pair of blue South sea earrings from her.

I like those faceted diamond beads.

Yes, they are very special canary whites  I actually agree that they would look stunning if they were larger and evenly cut.

 Now we know what you really think! :cheeky:

All: Bear in mind that they are no bigger than the faceted citrine in this pic (the gold filled beads are 3mm) - so you would barely see them BUT if they sparkled like crazy...then that's a bird of a different feather.

I suppose they could look okay on an illusion necklace, perhaps with something else?

Uppy...start a thread if you want to look for ruby or emerald strands - we're always happy to help :naughty: Or even diamonds LG :)) apparently they're around http://reviews.ebay.com/Diamond-Bead-Buying-Guide-for-Designers-Beaders?ugid=10000000001751489 and now I know where the idea came from....http://www.flickr.com/photos/kerrihale/6049770920/ Less expensive probably refers to faceted rock crystal (quartz) which can be quite stunning in their own right.

I wouldn't say no to a whole strand of diamond beads either! It's good to know the seller comes recommended LK, she does have some lovely pieces.

Yikes! What an embarrassing typo but at least I can still twist it around into a different play of words.

;)) :))

Those diamond beads are very similar to the necklace The Russian gives Carrie on Sex and the City. Just a lot smaller and more yellow....
