Our china was from C&B, their platinum line set and it was something like $80 per place setting on sale. I think $110 off sale or something. We got 10 sets...I still have to buy the other 2.

Anyhow, we just bought a wedding gift for a friend and theirs was $135 on sale and $180 regularly.

For me personally I didn't want something too expensive OR too cheap...I wanted something that was well-made and would last and would be classic but not frou-frou, I can't stand flowers and the like on china. We don't use it hardly at all but I wanted to know if I pulled it out, it would not be dated or too overdone or too delicate. That's just not us.

The platinum line is bone china with a very thin line of platinum on the edge and it works for all sorts of formal dinners which is why I loved it. You can use linens to dress it up for holiday (aka burgundy reds for christmas) or a lime green for a hot summer formal dinner etc. I knew what I wanted and there are TONS of platinum line sets out there but the C&B had the best looking bowls and cups...hee hee. For me that clinched it.

I also have my Mom's old china set which is super delicate with beautiful flowers on it but I would NEVER use it. It's just packed away...for what who knows.

I love LOOKING at china though. It was just foreign to me to get something too fancy but the expensive sets are DEFINITELY out there!

Melissa, my GF registered for the Calvin Klein china that looks alot like that graphite set you posted but they got a sandy tan color. It's very everday and they love it and use it all the time.

D4Me...my platinum line looks similar to the one you posted but without the flower in the center and I think without that inside line.

I''ll be inheriting my father''s favorite - Desert Rose

but I use multi-colored Fiesta Ware for everyday - I love neutral + bright colors

I''ll probably be inheriting that exact same set of Franciscan china from my grandmother''s collection that she uses daily. I love that set and I''ve eaten on it many a time!

I am so jealous of all of you who are inheriting such fantastic china! That must be so meaningful!!! Hopefully, someday, my grandchildren/children, etc. will be able to inherit something that I pick out....

elephant ~ that Tiffany set is beautiful. If fine china is something that you anticipate using for entertaining often, then I think you should register for it. I think breaking it up so that people can buy you a plate or whatnot, rather than a full place setting is a good idea.

I''m not registering for fine china - my mom is giving me hers and, while it''s not what I would pick out if I were getting new china, I know that I won''t use it enough to justify registering for it. There are plenty of other things I''d like for people to spend their money on for us!!!

I was planning on just registering for some plain every day china. But, I''m still not sure if I''ll even do that. Right now, we use a setting that my mom bought for me 12 years ago when I got my first apartment - they were cheap and she got them at Albertson''s (yep, the grocery store). It''s nothing special but I get compliments on it & it serves its purpose just fine so I just can''t figure out if I want new place settings that much or not. I guess I will just figure it out when we get closer to registering.

Here it is, not good picture but it came from replacementsltd.com

Elephant, I agree with teebee. It sounds like you'll be doing a lot of entertaining down the road so I say go for what you really want.

Its really fun to be able to enjoy all these sets of china that I've been given but to be honest, I've run out of room. My china hutch is so over crowded that its looking more like an unorganized china shop and there's only two sets in it. My ivy set is somewhere in the attic

..I'm hoping that right about now it doesn't come crashing through the ceiling..

But its so great to look at them and wonder who my great grandmother served on these sets. What did they do? Where were they from? I'll never know but its fun to imagine.

Now, if I could only get my grandmother to tire of cleaning her 3ct diamond like she tired of dusting the china

Kidding! Kidding!

Teebee~ I love that set! I love white china with embossed edges like that

I think everyone''s china/everyday looks great! Love how everyone is inheriting sets too!

Elephant - i LOVE Portmerion Botanic Gardens... I have friends that have it and another who has the butterfly version... SO PRETTY!!! Eating breakfast on a plate like that would have to make you smile!

Here is my moms china... its so nice and simple. Royal Doulton Coronet, grey on white with Platinum rim. And i was wrong about the gravy boat... its $200, but still, my brother almost broke it and his plate! The pattern has been discountiued for at least 25 years.

Oh, that''s just beautiful!

Our China was $122.00 a setting and then the accent plates were $50.00 a piece. I figured that I wouldn''t get all of them anyway and it was my wedding so why not?

My grandmother surprised me though and bought me 8 place settings and the accent plates.... then I wished that I hadn''t gone so high.... I think it also depends on where you register. I registered at Foleys ( Robinson May Company- like Hechts or strawbridges) that would be were you might run into the higer prices. I have seen so many cool and beautiful place settings for alot less since I registered.

Holy cow! 8 placesettings!!! All that and you left us hanging... so what does it look like?

It's funny but that brings up a good point. Who bought you china for the wedding gift?

All of our china placesetting gifts came from older members of the family, aka Greg's aunts and uncles, his stepmother's best friends, etc. None of our friends (except the ones in England!) bought us china...it was all more 'old school' family members who probably believe more in china gifts than giving a set of dishtowels or a blender!

The other thing to add is that now if I am buying a gift for someone, I try to give them a china placesetting or two because I know that was the most expensive and important thing that I wanted....we ordered a set of 12 because we plan to do lots of entertaining in the future. Now if I can only find a dinner table that expands to seat 12....those suckers are far and few between! Tons of 10 seaters but 12?

And Mara''s point brings us to my question. :) - I think I have decided to NOT register for any type of china at all..not even everyday.. I''m going to buy myself the bed bath and beyond stuff, and then be done with it.

Will my Older guests think I''m breaking tradition, or be offended? Like Mara said, I''d expect that they would really be the only people who''d buy it for me (although I did buy a friend part of her everyday set.. the same one I''m getting)

njc -- I love the Royal Doulton you have inherited! It''s so pretty and delicate! :) Renee -- that''s so nice of your Grandmother! Definitely post pics! MS -- I had a few friends who got married and did not register for china because they really wanted money for a down pmt for a house? I didn''t think that anyone cared?

Elephant, I have Portmeiron for my everyday, Pomona, which is fruits. I love it. I also love the Villeroy and Boch that you can mix and match, the fruit basket and the bordered plates. Bloomies has amazing sales and you can then add another coupon and get the stuff fairly reasonably. I also have white wedgewood with a basket border, can always be mixed in and then any accessories work.

Limoges is a region and type of clay...it is not the brand, by the way...so Bernadaud or Meissen can make limoges...hope that clears it up...I love beautiful dishes and things, but really never use them, it is plastic tupperware for me with three kids!

Mine is super expensive, but its only because I''m expanding on my grandma''s china, she only has 8 place settings, so I don''t need a lot. Its Red Aves by Royal Crown Derby.

I''m using Crate and Barrel staccato for my everyday.

I know this is an old thread but I am registering for Vera Wang Grosgrain that is $129. I already bought pier1 everyday dishes recently I really love so I am not registering for any everyday dishes.

These are all very pretty china.

Hmmmmmmm I must be the only one here. I''m not registering for china. I have no plans in the future to hold dinner parties that the everyday china place setting I register won''t work. That goes for crystal too. I decided that if I find a need for it in the future we will just buy it ourselves. Unless of course between now and then I suddenly decide to become Martha Stewart and have this fabulous dinner sworay''s! Yeah...that ain''t happening.

I don''t think we''ll register for china either. We live in "the Potteries" in England so about 15 mins drive from the Spode and Wedgewood factories (and all the others!) - when they discontinue a pattern or don''t lose as many in firing as they expected, they sell it off so cheap that you can buy it as everyday ware if you want. Good thing though, as I tend to throw plates (at the floor) when I''m angry so I''d be really upset if I broke wedding gifts!!

Fascinating how they make all of it though and the industrial history - we always take visitors who come to stay with us around the factory tours.

We''re kind of struggling with what to put on our register anyway - we''ve lived together for 8 years so have most of the little things but would like a couple of items of new big stuff - fridge/freezer, tv...in the UK, there isn''t so much of a culture of giving money or gift vouchers...so trying to think around this.
