How do I determine if the price is fair for a particular chrysoberyl I am interested in?
It's in the 3ct range with what is described as electric neon lemon green, excellent color grade, tone MD60, brilliancy 90%, zoning none, no inclusions.

My 3.7 ct neon yellow green chrysoberyl was well under $1k. It is well cut with a busier almost Portuguese style facet pattern, even colouration and is absolutely clean.

Thanks. This one is MUCH more than what you paid. Is it overpriced?
I'll go ahead and post the link to it. I guess if someone snatches it up, OH WELL!

These were old times, but it is 5+ ct neon-green chrysoberyl, from Tan, and it was just under 1K. I do not think the prices for these stones have increased much, it is not spinel

And below, is a photo of a 2+ (have to see vendors info) chrysoberyl from Jeff White. It was $ 500.00. I am debating between keeping and selling it because it has fantastic sparkle but then, I need to raise $$ for a fantastic gold necklace I saw in an antique jewelry store. But nothing like 3K, not even close... The necklace I am eyeing is around this sum! And we are talking about Jeff's material and Jeff's cut.

I can not give anyone advises, I made many costly purchases, before and during PS, and sometimes I think, what went into my head when I was buying this or that stone, but then I have to admit, OK, I either live with it, or be ready to sell it at a price well below what I paid for it.

Thanks Arkteia! What a beautiful bracelet.

Do you have more pics? It looks amazing!

Hi bright ice, I'm actually in the market for chrysoberyl also at the moment. Market prices are in the $250-350 per carat range for top material from trusted vendors (e.g., Prima), based on my research.

I am no pro, but I have been looking for a chrysoberyl for the better part of a year and have sent a half dozen back from Tan. In my experience it isn't as much about pricing (that if you spend enough you can purchase one right away), it's more that there aren't that many neon ones out there. I also contacted a bunch of cutters and they didn't have the rough to cut a neon one (well, at least for me ;)

In another thread I showed pics of my chrysoberyl. It definitely isn't as intense in color as TL's cushion, Chrono's trillion, or Minousbijoux's scissor cut one from Roger Dery. However, I brought it with me to intergem a couple weeks ago to compare mine to Prima's stock, and it was about as saturated as even their most saturated ones.

While not neon, mine looks bright and fantastic in various lighting conditions, its 3 carats plus, and I paid 450. Like all gem species, you will have much better luck finding a neon one under 1.5 carats. I still haven't decided whether to set it or not, since I want a custom setting, and I keep hoping to stumble across a more neon one before I put down the considerable cash for a setting.

Thanks for the responses. So, it looks like this one is priced quite high for what most are running. Thoughts on this one being a prime neon color?

Can you ask him for a hand shot, or one that is more "real life," in daylight?

There is a large elongated chrysoberyl listed on VVS1. It is an odd shape, and has what appears to be an eye visible inclusion. The pictures look to be very saturated, but I had Tan send me a hand shot and I wasn't confident that it would be as stunning as it could be, might look like a pale peridot, kind of a toss up. After I typed that, and reread it , it doesn't make a for a stellar recommendation does it ? :loopy:

In my experience looking and purchasing chrysoberyls, the ones that are neon and really glow are the Tanzanian. I have a few from other locations, like Sri Lanka, and the only ones that glow were listed as from Tanzania. It is interesting that Wildfish's is listed as coming from Madagascar. I wish some of our expert cutters would weigh in and give you their thoughts on what chrysoberyl locations to focus on. For example, while it doesn't surprise me, I didn't know that Madagascar produces the same level of neon.

Minous,
My limited experience with chrysoberyls also noted the same generality in that the Tanzanian chrysoberyls tend to be more neon than those from other locations. Of course this doesn't mean that some really fine ones might not be mined from other locales like Madagascar. I, too, am interested in what other vendors have to say about this.

Well, the stone itself is beautiful, and beautifully cut. I'd rather not comment on the price, but remember that Wild Fish is a fair trade concept. That is in itself commendable.

It is interesting that you guys say that Tanzania is the source of the most neon chrysoberyl - I bought mine from Richard Homer, and he states that his best material is from India.

I just got Secrets of the Gem Trade by Richard W. Wise in the mail today. To my horror, he barely mentions chrysoberyl. Only passingly in his chapter on alexandrite! I was like: "Come on man, you have whole chapters devoted to carnelian, topaz, and green tourmaline... Vivid chrysoberyl is at least as interesting - and attractive - as those!" In all fairness, though, he doesn't discuss jade either, stating that he doesn't feel he has the sufficient expertise regarding that material - and the book is a great read.

I know there was a small pocket of very neon material from Tanzania not too long ago. However, in my experience, neon chrysoberyl color resembles this photo of these gymshoes. I cannot comment if this color comes from other locations, but I've only seen it in Tanzanian material.

I printed out the image next to a chrysoberyl lying face down so you could see it's color better

Monitors may vary for intensity of color, but on my monitor, these look like super neon highlighter color.

TL--

Glad to see you back! Now that chrysoberyl is one of maybe three on PS that opened this whole can of worms!! No one's stone can compare!

Does this stone belong to you TL? It's a fine color!

It is a fantastic color!

Chrysoberyl is alexandrite's first degree relative (actually, the same stone) so even for this reason it merits attention. It also exhibits very interesting shift, if you really pay attention to it. I think, it is fantastic stone. If properly cut, it sparkles like a diamond, if not so well cut, it is still neon, if it is good! It is also so wearable!

I dream of vanadium chrysoberyl but they are rare, and the best ones are even rarer... These ones are really expensive!

My chrysoberyl is a shifter going from greenish yellow to yellowish green depending on the light source. When in its green state, it reminds me of the colour of antifreeze due to its intensity. It is a pity chrysoberyls are less famous than other gemstone types but I am not complaining because it keeps pricing within reach of us mere mortal with regular budgets.

As far as the colors from certain localities, here is my personal Sri Lankan stone. 3.38ct and destined to be recut so it can look its best. It is just short of eye clean, and it's a blinder in sunlight. I haven't seen a large amount of stones this color coming out of Sri Lanka. The neon and minty green Chrysoberyls are right up there as one of my favorites!

I think some people just post their stones to torment us who haven't been successful in finding their own!

That is what they do on PS. CS is just a torture chamber for us mere mortals... :)

When judging chrysoberyl color, please do it against a white background. I find the saturation can be enhanced by darker backgrounds, especially in pastel stones.

Faceted chrysoberyl has always seemed to be a difficult stone to properly market from what I've read in Modern Jeweler via David Federman, so it should be well priced. I think the price points that VAgemguy provided above are realistic from what I've seen recently.

I take pictures on all backgrounds. The dark just hides the terrible window better. :naughty:

My trillion chrysoberyl; one with a darker background and one with a more neutral background.

What about this photo?

It looks like a really pretty stone and may be super neon in person. Probably more yellowish green than greenish yellow. I guess the question is whether you are willing to spend about three times more than what others have paid for similar material. But the similar material may not be available at that price point.

(drool) Must have!

I have never heard of Chrysoberyl before finding Pricescope. Now I must have one!

So many gorgeous examples of intensely coloured chrysoberyl can be! Chrono, that trillion ring is gorgeous - the second photo is particularly beautiful!

Regarding Richard W. Wise's perplexing omission of chrysoberyl in his otherwise fine book, I came across the interesting statement in one of the listings on his site:
Ok, I confess, I have never liked chrysoberyl

Richard Homer was no doubt right when he told me that yellow green wasn't for everyone. And we all have that particular gemstone that just doesn't do it for us.

I saw that too. Interesting though that he comments that he thinks the pair he has is beautiful.
