I recently purchased a black diamond stud online and had the post and back switched locally to a platinum la pousette (protector) back for allergy and security purposes (not taking any chances). I had read two different descriptions on where the locking disc can sit on the post and would like a clarification.

1) can the disc sit flush against the ear lobe meaning the disc is not actually locked into the groove of the post. This way the earring would be very snug and the groove would
be used as a fail safe position if the disc is pushed back far enough to lock into the groove?

2) should the disc only be placed into the groove, meaning this is the intended way the la pousette locking disc is meant to be used?

This question is a bit premature since I have about 1 more week left of healing on my newly pierced ear before I start wearing the black diamond so I don''t know if the regular position of the disc in the groove will fit nicely or if I''ll want to slide it up closer to my ear lobe...but I''m curious.

Does anyone have experience with a la pousette setting and how it sits on your ear?
And whether the disc should indeed sit in the groove or can be moved up?

Fred

The La Pousette back (disc) should be pushed against the ear lope comfortably tight and NOT sit in the notch (groove). When it slides out, it will click into the notch(es) at the end of the post and lock in place. Get the larger posts and backs, they have stronger springs and deeper grooves. Larger backs also keep your earrings from flopping forward.

You should not wear these in the shower though. I would also get an extra back. You tend to drop one (on the car seat) just before an important night.

Here are what other people say in another thread:

"You might not have had them on right. They are intended to have the back sit flush to your ear. The indented circle that you have to get the back over is at the end of the post. That's just what keeps them from coming off by accident, not anything to do with how you wear them." - Lop

"...the "click stop" indents on the post of the protector back posts was the "fail safe" position and that actually the backs should be slid up the post to where they make your ears the most comfortable." - Wink

Thanks for the info, that''s exactly what I wanted to know. I do have the larger back and I do plan on wearing them all the time including in the shower so I will just have to accept that the springs will wear out someday and I''ll end up replacing the backs. I love this forum!

If you plan to wear them all the time including shower, I would suggest you pick a pair heavy friction back. The La Pousette back has a spring mechanism inside that will jam and fail if you get soap/shampoo residue inside.

La Pousette back is so easy to put on and take off. It takes you less then 5 seconds to put each side on (after a few weeks of practice). You may want to consider removing your earrings each night before your shower and soak them in Mr. Clean solution. They will sparkle like hell and ready for you the next morning.

You can wear other types of earring all the time; but diamond studs only sparkle when they are clean. Don''t wear them in the shower...

Ok I will give that method a shot. I assume that if soap and shampoo is the issue, it should be ok to wear while swimming as I do that 3 times a week. Thanks for the sound advice.

I have diamond studs with la pousette backs. I do wear mine in the shower and have for about 2 1/2 years. So far, the spring mechanism has not failed... I do clean them every couple days so the diamonds still sparkle. I alternate wearing them with other earrings. But otherwise, I sleep wearing them and shower as I said...

I have these and I wear them clicked into the higher position. Mine have 2 of those lines that the back clicks into. I wear mine on the higher so if that comes loose, they can still get caught and click on the second one.

Why are you not suppose to wear them in the clicked position?

I guess I have fat earlobes because If I pused the back up any higher than the second click line, my ear would turn red than blue and loose all circulation!

When you all clean your earrings, do you put the back into cleaning solution as well?

I do find those little disks very slippery and hard to handle with wet hands!

Well I actually put the stud on last night and as it turns out, it fits nice and snug against my ear with the disc locked into the second (higher) groove just as asscherisme explained. So maybe that second groove was added to these protector backs so people would have a choice or maybe it was designed to accommodate the average size ear lobe. Every jeweler I visited had the same book from which to order the protector backs from and it was always the post with the double grooves. Maybe that''s standard now for these settings to offer variety in positioning. I''m happy with the disc in the second groove.

To you, and others who wear them in the water.

Eventually the spring will rust out when you do that. It is not a problem, so long as you occassionally check to see that it is still in working order and replace it when it gets "sticky". I have had three clients have to replace the backs for that reason, usually after about 3-4 years of wear.

"... it fits nice and snug against my ear with the disc locked into the second (higher) groove"

That''s perfect.

You either have larger-than-average ear lobes or your jeweler has shortened the posts. I just make sure you are aware that it has to fit nice and snug against your ears and not sliding back and forth in your ears. If it clicks in the grooves and it fits nice & snug against your ear then it''s perfect. The springs in the backs last longer this way because it in a ''rest'' position not a ''loaded'' position

The backs do not need to be cleaned. Leave them out of cleaning solutions.
