i decided to start another thread as the other has veered off course to real estate....surprise surprise...

"This year. the AMT will affect more than three million middle-class taxpayers who will no longer be able to deduct state and local taxes or use the child tax credit. Next year, if not adjusted, it will affect ten million more taxpayers. So unless the Senate version of the new tax bill prevails, middle-class taxes will rise—even as the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 continue to reduce taxes on the very wealthy."

When I looked into it I didn''t find the AMT all that penal. Maybe I''m not middle-class enough.


I love these websites which tout themselves as "common-sense", somehow implying no bias. You then read a little in their "about us" page and find out they are run by dyed in the wool liberals.

R/A - the AMT is VERY penal. Most likely you do not have high property tax or state tax.

Why would this be news now? It''s been bantered about for years. The gov. isn''t going to do away with it. It brings in too much income. In theory, it was a very good way of limiting high income deductions. It just hasn''t kept up with inflation.
