Hi all,

My wife absolutely loves blue diamond that I bought her.

That's a good news, but I also bought her amethyst since it's her birth stone.

I bought it from Gem shop within my FOB in afghanistan.

Since amethyst is cheap stone, I didn't spend too much for nice 5.25 ct purple amethyst (Pendant size).

I sent it away to my wife, and she absolutely loves it.

Here is the problem, now she is telling me it is a fake amethyst, since stone is turning bluish green during the day time.

I do not want to tell her to take it for appraisal, since appraisal will cost more than the price I paid for that amethyst.

I've been web surfing to findout, if there is any color changing amethyst, but no luck.

What did I bought her???

I concur with your wife that the amethyst you purchased is mostly likely a synthetic stone. I could make a few guesses as to what it might be but the only way to know is to check the refractive index and specific gravity. An appraisal will do you little good because those assign a dollar value, with most store appaisers who are not familiar with coloured gemstones, only diamonds. What you need is a gemmologist who deals with coloured gemstones beyond the usual sapphires. The second less expensive option, possibly even free, is to bring it to a rock and mineral club where someone might be able to help you ID the stone with the tools they have in hand.

Oh dear, I'm afraid I agree with Chrono. Seeing blue/green in an amethyst makes it highly likely it's something other than amethyst.

If there is a good jeweller near to where you live (who has the ability to check the Refractive Index) then your wife could get it checked there. However, some simulants/synthetics have the same RI as the real thing so it's not an absolute check but it may give you an answer.

There have been a number of posts from armed forces personnel stationed in Afghanistan who have bought gemstones and 9/10 times unfortunately have been missold. Please be aware that good deals are very rarely what they seem. :((

odd because natural amethyst is quite plentiful from afghanistan and can be had for little money. This, of course, is in the gem markets and not at military bases....I wouldn't know the situation at all there but I do hear lots of fake material can be found at M-Bases,

Chloe,
Can you please elaborate? I'm not sure what you meant. Do you mean to ask the OP to go to Gem Select to find an amethyst or go to Gem Select and try to guess what it is based on pictures there? Going the 2nd route is merely guessing and does not even address the natural / treated / simulant / synthetic question.
