I don't have a retail presence so I see customers with an appointment (aka, 1 on 1). I don't mind people just looking at all. It is my chance to impress a customer, share knowledge and, perhaps, get a new client or to be recommended by that person. And, in a retail space, having people in a store makes it more likely that other people will walk in (up to a certain point, I think).
You are going to buy a ring so you are a potential customer. I have no respect for a store that expects someone to walk in and make a major purchase. That is not how people buy things and it is not right to pressure them into doing so.
