I am going wedding dress shopping for the first time next week. I have a budget of about $700 so I was thinking I would go to David''s Bridal and Alfred Angelo because I think both of them have lots of dresses in that price range. But now I am reading posts here and reading that people have tried on dresses for over $1000 and then found them online for $500-700 dollars.

Here''s my issue. I am afraid to try on dresses that are out of my price range. I''m worried that I will fall in love with one that I can''t afford and not be able to find it cheaper online and then have to settle for a dress that is in my price range that I am not as happy with.

What did you all do?

Maybe you could go to those stores first, and see if there is anything that you love. And then, if there isn''t, think about going to more expensive places and trying to find it online?

You can find a great dress for your budget.

I tried on dresses at Davids but then decided on an Allure Exclusive from a bridal salon. You could try on whatever you want in the store then look online. Pearl''s place and RK bridal have good prices on SOME dresses. Mine, of course, they didn''t!

I think this is what you are asking. Sorry if it isn''t!

Try on everywhere!! I went to the stores around town - a little upscale (I tried on Maggies and such) but not haute couture. I didn''t want to fall in love with one that I couldn''t afford either! Then, on a whim, I went to Davids and actually found The Dress, bought it and it is packed nicely away until it is time to get it altered. I even waited a month before I ordered it just to make sure that it was the dress - sure enough, it was!

Yes, I think I will go to the less expensive store first and then try the more expensive places. I have two weeks over Christmas break to shop in store and search online if I find something I love. How long can I wait to get the dress if it has to be pretty drastically atletered? I think we are getting married in June.

I feel lost in all this wedding stuff. I wish I''d have been a bridesmaid or something in someone else''s wedding so I would have had more experience with wedding stuff. We have to meet with a nun and register at the church and find out the dates they have avalible and then match that up with the reception site and match that up with my summer break and his vacation days and we have only been engaged for 6 days. I never imagined I would have to think about this stuff so soon.

Don't stress out!! Everything will work out and be beautiful! Just take things one at a time... list making helps. It feels good to mark large items off the list..

Did I miss your engagement post???

Your budget is totally normal and you should be able to find a lot of dresses in it. Do try other shops, you might be surprised to find that even high end stores will have a few in your price range...you maybe even able to purchase a sample at a reduced rate.

Try them on, by all means try them on!

I purchased my dress at David''s Bridal during their $99 sale, and of course MY dress wasn''t one of the $99 dresses, HOWEVER all of their dresses were on some sort of sale so I ended up with a $950 dress for $840 including 4 extra inches on the skirt, taxes, and a dress bag. I say go try ''em on, and if you fall in love with a particular style wait until they have a $99 sale, chances are it will be very soon!

Good luck!

Try on everywhere. Do NOT ask to try on or see dresses that are out of your budget range by more than $300.... Try on dresses within your budget in smaller boutiques (yes, they will have your price range in stock), but just don''t get sucked in to trying on dresses that are more than you can afford. I am confident that there is a gown out there for you in your price range, without resorting to ebay or wherever online if you''re not really comfortable buying sight unseen.

My parents bought my gown for me, but they gave me a strict budget of $1k WITH alterations. My mom and my MOH and SIL went with me dress shopping, and my mom walked into each of three stores (DB being one of them) and told the saleslady specifically her price range. I only saw two gowns in windows out of my price range that I loved, other than that I tried on exactly 13 dresses and fell in love with one (not at DB) for $700, no alterations needed, and I was out the door. All of this took place in less than 6 hours. It''s do-able, trust me! I loved my gown, still love it every time I look at the pics in my living room 4+ years later, and I got so many compliments on it, especially from my DH. You don''t have to fall into the "I NEED this $4k gown" trap, I promise.

My budget was the same and I found a gorgeous Alfred Angelo. I agree with those who said to not try on dresses that are way out of your budget, that way you won''t fall in love with one!

well i''m no help!
The most expensive dress I tried on was the one, I think that you just can''t help that.....
I wouldn''t skimp on your dress, it''s important, you want to make sure you feel great in it.

Also remember that some shops have sample sales and such or are willing to negotiate. I got $400 off of my dress just by asking for the sample sale discount even though my designer wasn''t included in the sale.

I just went to a regular bridal salon (I live in Boston). They had a lot of dresses in that price range, many of them. The dress I did buy was a Maggie Sottero and it was about $850 in many bridal salons, but the salon I went to had it for about $750. I didn''t even have a budget!! I just fell in love with the dress. You don''t necessarily have to go to David''s Bridal to get a good price (besides it''s possible you might not get the quality you want there). Look around and try stuff on. Have fun. And if you fall in love with something too expensive, then at least you know what you like and you can look for a similar style in a different designer.

I think you''ll find something really great for $700! I actually had one store refuse to let me try on any dresses that were over the budget amount I gave. It ended up being my favorite store. I went to a popular store in my area and didn''t like a one. Then stopped at this little shop and, no lie, loved every one she pulled out. So you never know....try a mix of stores. In my area, the only stores that would be over your budget are in the very upscale suburbs; those are the only ones I would skip. Look up their websites and see what lines they carry and that''s your best clue.

I liked the Jasmine line so I went to the stores that carry it. For example, I think this one was under $600....

p.s. I missed the posts about getting them cheaper online!! What websites are recommended?
