My husband and I just recently upgraded my wedding set. The ring we purchased was from Helzberg Diamonds. It''s a 1.24ct brilliant round in 14k gold. The color is I-J, clarity is I1. It is IGI certified and we paid around $5000 it. Not fully understanding everything about this information, this was also on the report:

measurement: 6.53 - 6.59 x 4.40 MM (I have no idea what that means)
polish/symmetry: good/good

My question is, is this a "good diamond?" On thing I''ve noticed is that it glows a bright blue-ish color when exposed to UV rays (tanning bed) and it immediately made me think we had an awful diamond. I read a little about fluro, does my diamond have this?

$5000 is comfortable in our budget and doing the trade-in from my old set helped us to buy a larger diamond. (We also have 90 days to return.) We''ve been very happy with Helzberg in the past, which is why we went back. (This is my third upgrade.) I just want to make sure we''re getting an "appropriate" diamond for the money spent.

Any and all comments will be very appreciated!!

Your diamond definitely has flourescence, which is not necessarily bad. Especially in the lower colors because it can make your diamond appear whiter. If it doesn't bother you (and it sounds like it might) it is no problem at all. I have a D color diamond with flourescence and I love it.

For $5000, did you get an new engagement ring and new wedding band? How much credit was put toward the new ring/rings? My guess is that you overpaid for this set, sorry to say. Bad news is IGI is not widely respected around here. They can be quite lenient with their grading. How is it for eye cleanliness? Can you see inclusions at all with the naked eye? An I1 graded IGI makes me very nervous. If they were being generous with the grading you could have a very included diamond on your hands. This is only a problem however, if the inclusions are visible and bother you or (more importantly) if the inclusions are such that they make the diamond unsafe.

As far as color goes, does the diamond look "white" to you?

It seems to me that you know little to nothing about the cut of the diamond. Cut is the most important of the 4 C's but in traditional jewelry stores it is often considered the least (if at all). The cut is what will make it sparkle and scintillate. The most important thing of all though, is how happy are you with the diamond? Do you love it? Is it beautiful to you?

there should be other information on your IGI card (depth, crown, pavilion) that would be useful to us.

It is cut deeply, so it doesn''t look as big as a 1.24 should.

I guess all in all I do like my diamond. Just a little nervous about making the purchase and making sure we got a nice piece of jewelry for the price spent (mainly because hubby said this was THEEEEE last upgrade so I want to be 100% happy with it). The flourescence doesn''t bother me so much now after reading a little more about it on Pricescope, but I will say that it floored me the first time I saw it glowing - I had no idea why it did that... I thought there was something wrong with my stone. (I''m such a newbie!!)

We actually spent around $5700 total which includes an eternity/anniversary band to go with my solitaire.

We did look at it under a scope and there are definitely inclusions but I could and can only see them under the scope. I cannot find them just by looking at it with the naked eye. And I''ve studied it like a mad woman. It does look white to me, I can see a lot of "rainbowing" (if that''s even a word) in it also. (Hope that''s not a bad thing!) This is my first solitaire - we upgraded from a four stone princess cut (four princesses put together to make it look like one) and I do love it!! Just want to make sure I have a "good investment."

If you love it, you should keep it! I don''t think you paid waaaay too much. It''s just that all of us PSers are used to the looow online prices. And rainbowing is not bad, it is called fire and you definitely want some of that!

Do you have the specs from the IGI report?

1.24 ct ??

this stone has a diameter of a 1.03 ct "ideal" cut.the stone is carrying too much weight on the bottom half.return it now !!!

Unfortunately all I have is the card that was inside the box with my ring. There is just limited information (what I gave in my original post). Sorry, I wish now that I had more info. From the way I understand, I can get a full report by registering it with IGI and paying a $25 fee. However, not being 100% if we''re going to keep it or not, I haven''t registered it.

One question I do have now that I think about it -- would I be better off returning the IGI graded stone for a GIA graded stone? I want to stay within our budget is and we''ll probably be going down in size but would this be a "safer" purchase? I remember seeing GIA stones in the store... Just a thought.

Just because I''m new here and very curious -- how did you know the diamond was cut too deep? When and if we do return this, what are the right measurements to look for?

I was going to mention that the 6.5 was the measurements around the 1ct mark of a well cut stone. Just to give you and idea...I have a .92 ideal cut and my measurements are 6.27-6.29 so my stone is a bit smaller but I bet if you saw it you would think it wasn''t much smaller than yours visually and from the size it should be!

I went to heltzberg to look at their ideal cut stones (masterpiece collection) and I have to say they were beautiful HOWEVER they wanted almost 4k more for a similar stone at about the same weight with a white gold setting! I was floored. I would definitely suggest you read up on cut here and arm yourself with info then go back and try to find something cut alot better that is going to be the best bang for your buck.
However if you love your stone and the way it looks then no worries. After all...it''s all about what your eyes and heart love...you are the one wearing it

Good luck. Please let us know what you decide!
