I can''t believe what is happening in society today. What happened to helping thy fellow man. If you can not count on the police who can you count on? I am appalled...almost speechless.

This here froggie is darn near boiling. That is ridiculous (the story you posted). I really don''t understand sometimes why things like this happen. It makes me doubt our whole system, and definitely makes me leary of trusting police officers. I know they would like to send the message that they mean business to the hardcore criminals, but in turn stories like this encourage the average citizen to associate the police force with distrust and I think us non-criminals worry more that we will "get in trouble" rather than be helped by police in some random situation.

I really think it''s no wonder that citizens feel they have to take the law into their own hands at times, because the alternative doesn''t seem to be the answer either. I hate feeling that way, but I remember back in grade school when our hometown''s "Officer Friendly" would visit our classroom, we all looked up to him and trusted him completely. Yet another truth that becomes exposed when you reach adulthood and find out what the world is really like.

this is the stuff of third world countries and fascist states: welcome to the new world order. its an illusion to think only ''bad'' people have something to worry about ''cause in the eyes of the new world order, we''re all bad people.

What happened to, "Protect and Serve"?

What happened to, ''Protect and Serve''?

There are still some good cops out there maybe as high as 60% nationwide average are still good.
A higher % in the south and midwest outside the big cities and lower % in east and west and way lower in any big city but is the one your talking to one of the 60% or the other 40%?
No way to tell.
And cops wonder why they are hated.

It goes back to the way they are trained these days.
I know several ex-cops that have moved into other fields because they cant stand the new way of doing police work.

For example in my area:
one department I know are going to be top notch professionals that protect and serve.
2 other departments that are 99% uniformed thugs.
2 other departments that are somewhere in between but mostly good.
Then there are the state cops which used to be pretty good until there was a huge change over in the leadership and now the few remaining good cops are fighting a bad department.

The issue is not whether there are still "some good cops". Of course there are. The issue is whether a US citizen or visitor any longer has any protection under the law or whether a "bad cop" (of the NSA or FBI or CIA) can get away with arresting, tapping the phones of, or torturing someone without proof, without a subpoena, without consequences to his career.

This episode is about more than a "bad cop". It''s about the abuse of power.

I don''t know if you watched the movie "Crash" or not, but that was a scary look at policemen for me!

And, then the stories of getting pulled over, but it''s not a real policeman! Scary!

All things added up, it makes it hard to fully put your trust in them! Then you have the cops that will abuse that little bit of power that they get. But, I think there are lots of dedicated men and women out there that have a real calling for the job...hopefully!

Sometimes these awful stories you hear on the news can really get you feeling down and even scared about the state of society. There is no doubt that in some areas it is headed downward. But I''m so glad we have this community in Pricescope, because it really makes me feel better about society! Everyone here is so nice, polite, friendly and knowing that there are still so many people like this really makes me feel good

This is just my warm, fuzzy moment... But really, I am very grateful for all of you on PS!

Oh for Pete bloody sake - this could be a news story from the 1950''s, 1960''s, 70''s, 80''s, 90''s - except in the 60''s the couple would have been shot.

It absolutely blows my mind that people are NOW waking up. Do you not think all this stuff was going on prior to 2006?

McCarthy ring any bells?

Oh, but wait - I''m sure some wipper snapper is going to tell me that the banking laws of reporting has changed.

My point is that this is nothing new under the sun. Why all the outrage NOW? This type of thing has been going on for years. Police abuse of power. Geez, it''s actually got better since the 1960''s - Anyone remember Kent State? Vietnam Protestor treatment?

I see post after post about how our civil liberties are being eroded. All blame the GW admin. Many thing were set in motion YEARS ago. I''m not saying everything is fine and dandy - it''s just where was the outrage then?

Heck, my grocery store invades my privacy. It pisses me off that I have to sign up for a discount card to get the sale items. Of course they know where I live, etc - they also know my buying habits. Information is soooooooooooo out there. The admin of this site has your cookies.

Agreed. BUT it doesn''t mean we should not talk about it and not expect it to be answered for. Lots of people choose to trip on the power their profession brings, and this is just another example.

I completely concur. It''s just the tie in to the "evil empire" i.e. the GW admin that I have a pertetual problem with.

I''m not a GW fan. In fact, Elliott Yamin for President! It''s just you can ''t blame all this erosion of civil liberties on the GW admin... happenin way before that. We have to constently challenge.

I agree! I think I''ve definitely noticed a shift post 9/11. People tend to be a little more suspicious, and want to look a little more deeply, and actually want answers on policies and issues.

I know I''m not as complacent about a lot of things as I was pre 9/11. I just don''t feel as safe and secure as I used to...

Here''s your link to Officer Nathalie Preston''s (the arresting officer) boss, Police Commisioner Leonard Hamm. You really should voice your concern to him directly from this website. Check it out.

I agree that this is not new. It is unfortunate. I hope that the story is accurately portrayed and that there is not more to the case than just asking directions.

Many years ago when I was "between" normal jobs I worked as an Encylcopaedia Brittanica independent sales rep (most people do not know that encyclopaidea sales - with any company - was only a position as an independent sales rep with "commissions only" earnings).

I "worked" some event at the Minneapolis Convention Center (or some such building in downtown Minneapolis). I left late at night and got confused by the downtown streets. In the dark I mistakenly ran a red light (on a lane where the other lanes turned green) while I was trying to figure out how to get to I-94.

A cop stopped me. I explained my situation - and that I did not realize that the lane stoplight was timed different from the other lanes that went "green" untill I was half throught the intersection when I noticed that it was still red - but by then it was too late to stop.

He said that he understood the confusion (both on the stoplight and the streets) - did not give me a ticket (at all) after running my plates and finding that I had a clean driving record - and give me directions on how to get to I-94.

This is one of the pleasant (if not uncomfortable) situations I remember whenever a cop pulls me over (occasionally) or if I have to talk to a cop. By and large - they are great folks. But, like every profession: there are a few bad apples that spoil things. I have been fortunate in my dealings.

I do hope that this story is correctly portrayed, and if so that this "bad apple" is removed from patrol duties.

One of my fears with stories like this is that there really is more to the story than what is reported in the paper - and that the cop did in fact have a legitimate reason for their actions. Let us hope that is not also the case here.

Perry

Perry, you are right: I think there is more to the story. These kids wandered into a not so great area of Baltimore, Cherry Hill. They ran into a cop with an "attitude" about young white persons wandering in for drugs. I think it is silly to make broad generalizations about our country based on this unfortunate event.

This episode is about more than a ''bad cop''. It''s about the abuse of power.
Exactly. And it is infuriating each and every time we hear about it, no matter what decade, period.

But what are we to do when abuse of power goes all the way up the chain to the president? Aren''t there supposed to be SOME good guys looking out for the best interests of this country while NOT stepping on law abiding citizens?

READ this update on the couple and the corruption in the Baltimore Police Department from today''s news.

There is big time corruption in the Baltimore Police Department, and it''s been there a long time. The good guys ARE helping this couple attack it.

Isn''t it the responsibility of all of us to watch out for our fellow law abiding citizens? - excercise your freedom of speech, contact the Baltimore Police and expresss your disgust - here''s the link:
