Crack under ring prong

Help!!! I knocked my new oval diamond engagement ring off the counter in the box onto the tile floor. It was hard enough to break the spring in the box and knock the ring out of where it was held in the box. At first, I just noticed the prongs were slightly bent. I took it to the first jeweler I saw who quickly looked at it under microscope and said no damage to diamond. Fast forward 5 days and I swear now if I turn the ring to the side I see a hairline running from the prong to the center of the diamond. It had one small pinpoint and feather in the pavilion according to the report but they do not appear to go to the prong. I am taking it back to jeweler asap but just wanted to know if the prong could possibly put enough pressure to run a crack down the diamond? Or could this be the feather that expanded? I’m obviously freaking out. I have only been engaged two weeks and I’m beating myself up for being so careless. The ring is insured with JM but I can’t stomach the thought of having a different diamond than the one my fiancé picked so carefully for me. I posted a top view picture. I can’t get the hairline to focus.3DBE6DEB-5552-4B22-9B51-FBDFC248A60E.png

Does your diamond have a report with an inclusion plot diagram? First thing to do is to check if there are any inclusions in that area plotted on the diagram. My guess is this is the first time you’re inspecting your stone this thoroughly - very possible this “line” has always been there but you’re just seeing it now; pronging a feather inclusion to hide and protect it a bit is not an uncommon practice.

Is the “line” definitely not a hair or a piece of fuzz that got stuck?

It is, unfortunately, possible that the fall caused some damage - either by introducing a crack or by introducing a hairline fracture that has expanded over the last few days. But first make sure it’s not a trick of the eye or something that’s always been there.

Try not to worry too much - at least until you talk with the jeweller who sold the stone/made the ring. Accidents happen. Worst case scenario is that it’s damaged and a recut to fix it isn’t possible - and since you were smart and insured it, even the worst case scenario will end up okay for you!

I do have the GIA plot. There was a feather inclusion, but it did not go all the way to the girdle under the prong as this appears to. My fear is the feather expanded to the prong. I was hoping since it was in the box it would’ve been okay

I have to turn it upside down and shine the light to see the line, but it’s definitely there

that ^^^^^^^^ could also be the girdle reflection

I see the girdle reflection. This is vertical from around the prong

It’s possible. But also possible that nothing’s wrong. I know it’s hard but try not to worry yet, catastrophizing with “what ifs” won’t help anything!

Do put it away until you talk with your jeweller - wearing it can only make any damage it may have sustained worse. At the very least if the prongs are visibly dented it likely needs some prong work.

Recommend that you take it to multiple jewelers in your locale to have more than one inspection performed.

Yes. The jeweler I took it too initially after the drop was not where It was purchased or made. Taking it there next. Racking my brain at what I could’ve done since the first inspection to make the crack appear since they said it did not have any at that point

I had no idea a drop from a table could cause prongs to bend. I've dropped my ring more times than I can count but never had that happen to me. I'm curious, what type of metal is it?

Hoping your inclusion was always there and that the stone itself isnt damaged!

Me either….you can’t even notice the prongs being bent just by glancing at it. I can just tell that they aren’t aligned properly/evenly spaced anymore and one appears to have a crack in one side where it attaches to the stone. They are all still touching the stone. I’m even more shocked given the ring was in its box. Granted it was a hard enough fall (onto tile) to cause the box to break and the ring to move around out of position in the box. It was underneath a towel on the bathroom counter and when I grabbed the towel the ring box went flying I had been so careful it was such a freak thing but I still am sick over it

I believe the prongs are white gold. Ring itself is yellow gold

So your ring was in a box when it dropped on the tile floor? It seems unlikely to me that it would have been damaged while in a box. I've dropped my unboxed Pyrex glass vapes on the tile and many times they've survive unscathed. Maybe call JM tomorrow? Certainly they've seen every scenario possible.
I live in Neenah where they're headquartered and talked with people who work there. They all say it's a very good company. See if they can put your mind to rest.
I'm sorry you're in this situation.

You could also check and see if you have an appraiser nearby on this list .
If not if you post the general area your in someone may know of an appraiser there.

yes it was in the box it came in. When I opened the box after the drop the ring was loose inside instead of in position in the box.

If it was in the box it is very unlikely it was damaged. But do have it checked again.

I agree, if the ring was still in the box after the fall, I don't see how your diamond could really be damaged. I guess anything is possible, but it does seem very unlikely.

Years ago I tripped and fell on cement sidewalk and this happened, with zero damage to diamond: just trying to put your mind at ease.

Wow thank you! I’m hoping it’s just my eyes playing tricks on me

Just clarifying: box fell on floor, ring remained inside box.
If that’s accurate, the chance of damage is minimal.

Yes, box fell on floor. Ring stayed in box but bounced around in box because it was loose in box when I picked the box up. Hoping!

Good gravy! What happened to you?

I’m just worried because there was definite damage to prongs so I feel like the prongs could’ve damaged the stone?

The inside of those ring boxes are kinda padded. It’s probably fine. If you had a loupe you could know for sure, but now with New Years, you might have to wait a couple days to have a jeweler check it out. Of course beware if they say “OMG you need a new diamond - here are some of ours you can buy today. They won’t last long, hurry.” Then run away!

eta: you said the jeweler said no damage to the diamond. But did the jeweler confirm there is damage to the prongs? Doesn’t look like any damage (but your picture is not magnified)

Prong on the left is the one with the damage B3F6C974-8E49-4348-BFB4-F2A7E8428BCA.jpeg

If that's a divot or a dent, I wonder if you hit it on a door frame or something quite solid. Hard to imagine that happened inside a ring box, but you said the spring came loose. That would have to occur with considerable energy to do this to the prong. What type of metal are the prongs?
Beautiful ring, BTW. I can see how thus would make you crazy.

it seems like an odd place for damage to occur to the ring in the box. You say
It was hard enough to break the spring in the box and knock the ring out of where it was held in the box

Since the ring was still in the box after the fall, are you saying that you think the spring did the damage to the prong? I just don't know how that could happen. Especially seeing the location of that dent. Are you sure you didn't knock the ring on something while wearing it as @Ibrakeforpossums asked? It would take a pretty hard knock to do that I would think, and I can't imagine how it could have gotten hit that hard while still in the box.

I dropped my diamond ring once on my bathroom tile floor.. I freaked.. I had my loop and examined immediately.. I thought I got a big crack in it... turned out when I calmed down it was prong reflection...
