Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stones?

I'm looking for opinions on side stone choices with a cushion cut center stone in a three stone setting. My jeweler can get me a great price on round brilliant stones so I'm considering putting rounds as the side stones. Thoughts?

Re: Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stone

Is the cushion a brilliant cut or a more antique cut? Is the main stone square or elongated? How much of a size difference between the center and sides? (I ask that because if the stones are of relatively equal-ish size, then not likely, but if the rounds are A LOT smaller than the center, and also if the cuts match -- i.e., not an antique center cut and brilliant sides -- then it *MAY* work...)

Without seeing the stones it's very very had to make an intelligent comment about all this (although I'm trying--really!). Anyway you can post pics of the main stone?

My gut feeling here is probably not, but at the end of the day it comes down to what is appealing TO YOU. If you see these stones all together and it makes your heart sing, then YES!

Re: Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stone

The center stone will be a 1.8 carat hearts on fire cushion cut. I think it will qualify as a brilliant cut, but the key is it won't look liked crushed ice.

I'm flexible with the side stones, but I'm initially thinking .4-.5 carat round brilliants. I think it could work, but it's hard to find examples online....

Re: Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stone

I think that would be weird looking. I just can't picture it. Everything I'm imagining would make it look like a "fashion" ring than a timeless engagement ring.

What is your cushion cut's style? Is it a modern? Or antique? Can you post a photo?

Honestly, I wouldn't put it in a 3 stone.. I tried picturing it with traps or with bullets, but everything I'm picturing it with is taking away from the pillow-y outline of the cushion that I would want to show off. Unless they're teeny tiny stones that make it more like sidestones vs. a 3-stone look.

Whoops you posted at the same time I was writing.
Can you go to a jeweler/setter to check out sidestones next to it? I'm thinking nice tapered baguette sides like the classic Harry Winston: http://www.harrywinston.com/store/e...roducts/004bclassicwinstonroundengagementring. Nothing to overwhelm or take away from the cushion outline.

PS: You might want to flag this thread to the moderators, and move it to "Rocky Talky". :wavey:

Re: Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stone

This may be more a personal taste opinion, but I would also vote that a cushion center with round centers would not be my first choice. If you do want side stones, I would prefer skinny baguettes, half moons, or trapezoids to go with a cushion. I'm not familiar off hand with what type of sparkle the hearts on fire cushions have but I'm sure it is a modern cut.

Mine is cushion with round side stones. As soon as I can I'll post photos.

Can't wait for your pics, Dragonfly!! My mind is like being uber uncreative right now lol, all I can see is circle-square-circle, all the same size, bunched up together or in bezels. Very mod. lol.

Re: Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stone

I thought I remembered seeing a couple of examples on Caleb Meyer's site. First is a FCD cushion with round brilliant sides.
Second is an old mine cushion with european round cut sides. What type of setting were you thinking of?

Re: Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stone

Do the sides have to be rounds? could they be 1/2 moons instead?
These are just a few screen grabs...

What about a 5-stone with smaller RB cuts? I think this ring is really different, but also keeps a simple design:

and some others I nabbed from a google search:

For the last one, seems like they did martini-like prongs to make the rounds look more trillion-shaped.

I would agree with others that RBs with the cushion would be hard to pull off aesthetically. Maybe if the cushion is more elongated and rectangular it would be easier? Do you know the L:W ratio of your center stone?

Re: Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stone

I think it'll look better if the sidestones are coloured. If they are all white, it might look rather out of place.

Re: Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stone

I had the same thought as Enerchi and immediately considered half moons. It seems that most of the examples of cushions with rb sides have been bezeled or as the example Chrono posted, colored stones. I think these work because they play up the difference in cuts. I agree with the others that for the stones to be aesthetically pleasing your setting choices will be limited.

Re: Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stone

I don't prefer the juxtaposition of sharp edges and rounded sides.

I like the half moon idea, but as i ithin you should play up the hard lines, I prefer trapezoids.

Also I think bullets or trillions would look nice.

Re: Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stone

Like this, but more like maybe a bit more step cut like, sense your radiant isn't crushed ice.

Re: Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stone

^^ His center is a cushion, not a radiant. I mentioned half moons too but more and more I'm thinking that is a perfect way to combine the roundness of a RB next to the edges of the cushion.

oh duh. sorry, i read hearts on fire as one that looks like a princess of hearts.....

i still think chubby trillions would look cute, or bullets

here are a lot of examples

Re: Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stone

Can I add my vote for half moons?
The cushion might end up looking like a mis-formed round brilliant if sandwiched between two rounds. The purpose of the side stones is to complement the center stone and complete the look of the ring. If they clash or feel discordant, the ring will not appear elegant. A 1.80 ct. cushion is probably STUNNING, take the time to view it with the side stone choices before it's set to make the decision right.
Another thing to consider is how the diamonds will be set. If you plan on bezels, the picture above of a cushion center with round brilliant sides all bezel set doesn't look too bad. Otherwise, I'm not a big fan of this combo with prongs.
Like I said, take the time to view the diamond with the side stones before having it set. Good luck!

Update us on what you think after you see the side stones OP!

Thanks for all the feedback and insightful opinions. I've decided with the correct proportions, a round side can look really nice. Here is an example.

I think the reason this works is because of the "martini" setting for the side rounds. The 3 prongs trick the eye into seeing a more triangular (trillion) shape. In other words, it wouldn't look right if the rounds had 4 or more prongs. What do you guys think?

I think you're right - plus in this setting, as in the ring with sapphire sides that Chrono posted, a small sliver of each round stone is obscured by the center stone when you look at the ring head-on, effectively changing the shape of the side stones. msop04, that's a beautiful trellis setting, by the way!

Re: Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stone

I've been playing around with side stones too and I would highly suggest you try out Ritani's new online feature (http://www.ritani.com/ring-designer), it was mentioned here on Pricescope.

One also can change the whole look of the centre stone just by use of which prongs you choose or if you choose a halo and what shape that halo is. =)

Re: Cushion cut center stone with round brilliant side stone

Great choice! The prong setting locations work perfectly :)

I thought the the OP's choice of the Knox trellis ring was really pretty as well! I like their settings, but don't like that you have to buy one of their stones. ::) (on a side note, I strongly considered a solitaire Knox setting - http://www.knoxjewelers.biz/products/design-2171 - before I got engaged, but knew I didn't want to purchase my stone through them... it's a shame, because they really do have lovely pieces and that solitaire still makes my heart sing -- just look at that profile!!!) Ahhhh... I may use it as inspiration for when I get that 3.5 carat one day... :Up_to_something:
