Hi everyone! I'm am new on here.. so I'll make this short and sweet.

My husband is upgrading my wedding set, for christmas he got me

http://www.jamesallen.com/wedding-and-anniversary/Ladies-Diamond-Rings/18kW-Common-Prong-Wedding-Ring.html

but in Platinum

and now that our 4 year anniversary is approaching he wants me to pick my diamond, we are on budget so we are keeping it at 1 carat- but now the issue is that I dont know if i want a cushion or an oval diamond. I find ovals sophisticated and timeless and I find cushions more modern and sleek.. so my question is can I ask for your input on which shape to go with??

here is the a picture of the setting:

also,

I'm not sure if I should add a halo or leave it as is.

thanks in advance :)

:wavey: himni,

I can see what you mean about both stone shapes. Even though the cushion cut has been around for a long time, its rise in popularity does give it a more modern feel in my opinion as well.

Some many factors go into making this decision that it is really difficult to just pick one over the other.

One thing that might help you in your decision making is each stone's face-up size. The oval cut usually faces up a lot bigger for its carat weight, especially when compared to a cushion cut, which has a tendency to looking smaller - based off a round brilliant cut.

I love both shapes, but the cushion is definitely one of my favorites, especially because of its "pillow-toppiness"!

I was thinking that exactly...If you want a bigger look then go with an oval. You did look at the pictures of that setting made up with
different shapes right?

thanks for your help everyone!

I did look at those posts and they just made me fall more in love with cushions and ovals lol, - I'm leaning more towards ovals since they look bigger.... I requested more images for an oval diamond from JA, I'll post it when I get it - and hope that I can get more help from you kind folks:)

I vote for an oval! However, I am the exception on PS, as I don't really care for cushions. I am an oddball. I do like the crushed ice ones that are hated on PS better than the regular cushions :cheeky:

Is a J color diamond bad? its vs2 clarity and premium cut?

I think you will probably see some color in a J oval but it really depends on your sensitivity. Does it have any fluor?

Hope I don't confuse the matter further but have you looked into what style of cutting you like? If you like more modern or more antique. If you like modern or just don't care I would hands down go with an oval. They are a beautiful shape, I think they really flatter the hand and who would say no to bigger face up size?

My vote would be oval. I'm in the same boat as you - looking for a 1 ct oval. =)

Another vote for oval, will look bigger and be more unique!

ok here are some of the ones that I like so far: our budget for the diamond is 2500.

the hubby is not excited about J color diamonds tho..

with ovals I'm starting to worry about bow ties..

the issue is that we are in Canada for work for a yr, we will be in MD for one week in March so thats when we plan to get the diamond- then the setting when we return in June- but who knew how hard it was to decide.

again thanks for the feedback:)

funny, I think of cushions as being old fashioned and timeless and ovals as being more modern and sleek lol

based on your words I think maybe an oval...

Did you end up with Cushion or Oval? :naughty:

I went with a cushion, and I'm very glad I did.
