We are starting to consider cushions, although I know that there is a wide range of variance in the types of Cushion Cuts and specs. I am trying to understand cut and style differences in these cuts

I note that GIA reports call refer to some stones as "Cushion Modified Brilliant", while other GIA reports simply state "Cushion Brilliant" What is the difference in these cut styles?

I would also like to confirm the general "rules of thumb" in judging initial cut quality when I look at specs online....I just want to get a starting basis in undertanding specs for cushions. I am thinking that depths in the mid 60%''s and tables in the high 50%''s to low 60%s are the starting point for a decent cut...Am I in the right range??.

ah, the complexities of a cushion search. That is just the thing, the numbers really don''t mean that much..you just have to see it....when I first started looking , I was told to not get one with a depth below like 65....but have seem many beautiful ones on here that are like 55 depth...you just have to see...i never never thoguht I would want a diamond that was a lower color than g or maybe H...and I ended up with an I....that i have to say looked more white that an H one when I was comparing side by side....as for the different types...there is a thread in here that shows the different types..just search on here for like suchion types or cushion shapes....good luck! Love the cushion!

Many different cuts are called cushion. The difference between a Cushion Brilliant and a Cushion Modified Brilliant has to do with style of the pavilion faceting. Generally, if it departs from an 8 cut (like the pavilion patterning of a round brilliant) it’s listed as modified. Here is a thread with examples.

I just wanted to put another voice in for numbers don''t mean much for a cushion!! Mine has 55% depth but it''s sooo brilliant and sparkly (& looks larger for its carat weight

) so don''t rule out too many stones based on numbers alone!! Good luck!
