Hi New Friends,

I''ve spent so much time lately reading this forum, that you almost feel like family. Strange eh?

To business: I bought a princess cut stone from Diamond Source VA (1.2 carat, H, VS1) and I''ve been looking for a simple, elegant, baguette setting in either platinum or white gold. So far I really like the Dimend Scaasi princess-tapered baguette with rounded shoulders in platinum (only 1600!), but they only sell complete rings....

Sooo, I went to a local jeweler in my area (NC) and showed him the Dimend Scaasi photo. He seems to be a great guy, but the prices are so much higher: same sort of setting with 2.75-5.5-2.0 mm baguettes on either side (20-25pts each) is 3k in white gold. I''m leaning towards going with him, but I wanted to ask you all if you think that is a fair price for a custom-made ring.

Thanks in advance,

Aaron

Not a good price, esp. if it's in white gold.

A fancy schmancy halo setting in platinum with pave was going to cost me $3,000. So even though the jeweler would be sourcing the sidestones for you, it seems really pricey.

You could call Brian @ Knox Jewelers. They do quite a few of this sort of ring and their prices are reasonable.

Also check out Pearlmansjewelers.com. They do stock settings, but they have SOOOO many settings I would think they'd have something classic like this.

I''m with neatfreak. That''s way too expensive! Crazily expensive, really. My white gold setting with a halo and pave all over the place was less than that. Don''t do it! I would also talk to Knox Jewelers! Or e-mail Whiteflash for a quote-I think their settings are very reasonably priced.

I like Blue Nile's version, and it seems to come pretty close to the Scaasi one (especially the first one here):
Platinum for $1300
WG for $500
Larger sidestones for $3200

Edit: The problem with the price is the size of your baguettes. See that last Blue Nile one for $3200? That's about the size of baguettes you're looking at. I'd go for the smaller ones like in the $1300 BN setting. I think those big baguettes will draw attention away from your center stone!

WF also has a version...check out

I''m pretty sure BlueNile won''t sell just the setting, which is annoying-they carry some good ones. Can Diamond Source of VA find you a setting like what you want?

Oh, that''s a shame! I like the BN setting for $1300 much more than any of the others...the baguettes just seem too thick on the WF and Knox ones (as well as the 3rd BN I posted).

I'd ditto calling brian knox at knoxjewelers.biz

He just made me a beautiful RHR with bag sidestones but the setting is *beautiful* and very reasonably priced. He consistently makes settings that are fairly priced and well made. He's also a really nice guy who seems to care about his customers.

I meant to mention in my post that the setting I linked wasn't exactly what you wanted, but that they can easily make you one. I'd give Brian a call and get a quote.

Thanks all for your input - I did contact Brian at Knox and he gave me quotes for white gold and also 950 platinum with .35 ct tw and .50 ct tw baguettes. His prices are about $1000 lower than my local jeweler (Brian quoted 2k in wg and 3k in platinum for the smaller baguettes). I would go with an "off-the-shelf" setting, but Brian says that the somewhat rectangular shape of my diamond (6.23x5.96) won''t fit real well...SO, I think that I''m leaning towards the smaller bags in platinum. Will post pics when the saga draws to a close.
