Update: I had a long and helpful discussion with my SA and I have decided to have them send me the stone to look at, knowing I can return it if I don't like it.
This was helpful data for me (please let me know if anything is glaringly incorrect):
Super Ideal stones (all vendors) are approx 1% of total market sales, and vendors like Tiffany and Harry Winston, who presumably have many happy clients, aren't super ideal.
In the past ten years, WF has only had one D-VS1 3-3.5 carat stone! In the same ten years they only had 5 F-VS1 3-3.5 carat stones. This tells me I would wait a very long time for a stone I'm looking for, and even if I found one, the theoretical advantage of upgrading would be another lifetime of waiting. The upgrade advantage lays in the court of smaller stones or stones of lesser clarity and/or lower color. I believe WF to be the largest vendor of super ideals and as such there would be no advantage to waiting on a different vendor to produce my unicorn.
To custom cut a stone like this would be 15% more (of a lot).
Even if I were open to a custom cut, the problem for me is the risk of inclusion placement. Not having inclusions under the table is vey important to me. Even if they are not visible to the naked eye, it would drive me bananas, more bananas than the idea of imperfect arrows. I watch some of WF ACA videos and seeing the inclusions in the middle of the stone hurt my brain.
In general, all D/E stones, around 3.3 carats, VS1, without inclusions under the table are extremely rare. As a commodity then, this stone would always have and retain the value assigned by the market. Though I am purchasing this not as in investment, purely for my enjoyment. Perhaps my future daughter-in-law (or grandchild) will like it.
Please continue to share you thoughts if there is something I have not considered!
