Good morning to all
35.gif
How are we all doing?

I am trying to get back on track, have had a lot of stress the past few days with one thing and another and haven''t been feeling hungry still. Hopefully things will settle down and I can get back on the program and once my tree trimming is finished I can get back to my arm exercises. I will never complain again about my arm workout after waving a heavy electric tree trimmer above my head for hours.....

Good morning to you Lorelei!

I don''t think you need a program...sounds like you live at a fitness camp, with all the shoveling, tree cutting etc...

Good morning to you too Blodlets

I DO live at a fitness camp and rather than being a fit and foxy lady, the way I feel at the moment is like a broken down wreck

But I should be most delightfully lovely by the summer hopefully

Good morning, Ladies.

I am happy to say I ran 3 miles this morning and found it relatively easy... that is, I could have probably done at least 4.5... which is excellent news since I am at a half way point in my training for the 10k (6.2 miles) which takes place in May, and I think I am on track.

When I ran my last lap, I was so excited, I could have screamed! :)

It''s been 2 years since I successfully ran a 5k.

Hope you''re all having a great Tuesday.

Good morning beautiful ladies! How are we all doing this morning?

Lorelei- What on earth do you do? Do you actually live on a farm (if so, that is really cool!)!?! What a workout you get!!!
I do have my own little farm Virginia and yes the workouts never stop making sure that the residents are all happy and comfortable! PS and diamonds are my bit of glamour amongst the horsemuck

I worked out last night, but I didn''t do interval training. I found that my legs were still kind of sore from last week''s interval training, so I just did 2.25 miles at 6.7 miles per hour and did the weights for my arms, legs, and stomach. I''m going to try and do some interval training tonight. I''m training for a 10 mile race in May and want to get my speed up first, then I''ll work on getting my mileage up. I''m jealous, Stermag, sounds like your training''s going a lot better than mine is for our races in May.

Virginia, sounds like you''re doing pretty well even if you gained a pound. I''d rather lose inches than pounds, and boy could I stand to lose inches around my waist! I never weigh myself because then I''d get discouraged. I can pretty much tell by the fit of my clothes how heavy I am.

Lorelei, sounds like you don''t need to workout. With having a farm, you get a workout every day!

Virginia,

I fluctuate by as much as 5 pounds between the beginning and end of my cycle, and that is independent of any real weight gain, just water retention.

For this reason, I feel as though, for some women weighing once a month, at the same point in their cycle, is the only way of seeing any actual results.

Besides, and MORE IMPORTANTLY, if you''ve lost inches, it''s entirely possible (probable even) that you have actually lost fat but gained weight in lean muscle mass. Do not get discouraged, there''s no reason to! :)

I do get a great daily workout Coda! I need to mainly increase my upper body strength I think to help me lift things. My legs have always been strong but I have no upper body strength at all which is probably due to my scoliosis. My doctor is great - he deserves a huge round of applause IMO - as he just raises his eyes and laughs at me and my exploits, but tells me to go carefully and not twist my spine. I have had so many doctors and specialists tell me not to do this, don''t lift that ( as if that would stop me with my animals) and it is so good to have an understanding doc who lets me lead my life, even if I have a crazy and unusual one!

I never weigh myself either Coda - I found it was making me too obsessive and frustrated, interestingly I haven''t weighed myself in a long time and have maintained and lost even more weight far easier. With us being women it is so frustrating to be so good and step on the scales once a month at the wrong time and see an increase

Lorelei- Cool, you DO live on a farm! Where is it?
Don't worry about the pound gain Virginia - that's why I never weigh it's too frustrating and don't forget you have to consume 3,500 extra calories to gain a pound and I really doubt you have - it's just a normal fluctuation I bet.

My farm is in England

Did the walking thing this morning again and will do the biking tonight. My feet are getting blisters from these darn shoes. ARGH!

Morning ladies.

I have not worked out yet today which, knowing myself, means I probably won''t. I just have no motivation today. But, 5 days a week is not so bad...

I am super tired and hungry today and fighting off the urge to order a hamburger for lunch. I don''t think I ate enough yesterday.

Feeling blah...

Amanda, that''s a problem I have too. I get stuck not eating enough and am DYING of hunger later in the day. Then I end up gorging on something unhealthy to get rid of the ''hungry'' feeling. UGH.

Can anyone recommend some high protein snacks that are low fat but still fill you up?

When i first met my partner I was 150 pounds.

Slowly but surely...I lost 30-pound, which I have managed to keep off. The funny thing is that DH still recalls the day he met me, and how gorgeous I was. And I always think...that's odd, because I thought I was fat!

Men don't seem to notice subtle changes in body weight. They aren't caught up with weight and body image, like us ladies. I think when I realised that my partner loved me plus or minus a few pounds....I just felt more comfortable in my skin.

When you think about it, we are not drawn to thin people...we tend to find confident, happy people more attractive to be with.

I have in the distant past done all the slimming clubs in the world. I use to weigh myself (naked) every morning (in the kitchen, because the floor was flatter there for a more accurate reading) and i would remove all jewellery, watches..etc I'd have taken the fillings out of my teeth if it made me weigh less!!! But..in the end, I just became bored of jo-jo dieting and constantly thinking about food.

I only use the scales occasionally now. I think it was traumatizing the cat seeing me in the buff every morning!

I guess at my age (nearly 41) I'm tying to grow old gracefully...and defy gravity as long as possible. Never mind the weight....I just want to keep my 'bits' in the right place!

You are so funny Blods! I have been there with every trick in the book with scales - never weighing on carpet, shifting my weight, removing all jewellery, never having a drink before weighing.... I could write a book

I eventually decided it was too soul destroying so I binned the scales and have been much happier for it.

I sooo wish I could be a runner but I just don't have the lung capacity for it, I am such a wuss about that. Even my kickboxing class gets me so breathless I feel like I will pass out sometimes. But I have always been like that, so que sera sera. That's also why I like walking, I can walk very briskly and sometimes it's quicker than other people's running paces! So knowing how hard it is to run and be dedicated to it, I always am so envious of those who can do it and love to do it and train for things like marathons and events!! I just do the 5k walks in those things and Greg runs the 5k or 10k with my dad.

Anyway, yesterday was a good day except I felt really odd most of the day stomach-wise, couldn't tell if I was getting a bug or what. Had a tuna sandwich for lunch, an orange for a snack and then dinner was two steak tacos (corn tortillas, lots of steak, salsa and that's it, yum!) and lots of water. This morning I had cereal and coffee. I'm glad I went to work out last nite even though I felt kind of erfy and I am SO SORE...seriously Lorelei if my arms feel anything like yours I feel for you!! My right arm seems to get sore more quickly, probably because I am right handed and it is just killing me, the muscle that runs down the outside of the arm which of course you use for almost everything, OW. I keep stretching it. But no arm workouts for me today, I am going to a show in SF so I'll be doing lots of walking today, and hopefully will get in my 2m later this evening with P.

I also wanted to say I do not weigh myself, personally I feel like the scale is not a friend! It's very fickle and I really don't want to see if I gained or lost a pound, from morning to night the scale changes and women retain water sometimes etc. It's just not empowering IMO. I use the measuring tape and measure myself every other day or so in key areas because I want to see improvement in inches rather than pounds. Also I have always weighed alot, muscle is deceptive and takes up alot of space and is very heavy. When I told Greg how much I weighed this last week (after he told me I looked sexy and hot!) he was shocked and I said well thats why I don't weigh myself becaused I don't LOOK like I weigh that! I don't think guys get it...but yanno boobs can be heavy !!
9.gif

Also funny re: the guys because all Greg can think about when I am working out and eating better is 'I hope you don't get too skinny!' and I am thinking HAH as if!
5.gif

Good work Mara! I know what you mean with the sore arms, also under my arms and down the sides are very sore too and makes me howl if I forget and stretch them the wrong way

I used to run years ago and it is hard but I ended up tearing the ligaments in my knee so no more running for me. Its a shame as I used to feel like the Bionic Woman when I really got going.

"Can anyone recommend some high protein snacks that are low fat but still fill you up?"

I LOVE the Kashi bars, like Granola bars but they have more fiber and protein in them and relatively little fat and sugars. If I am desperate for something between lunch and dinner I eat one and I feel pretty good for about 2-3 hours. They have lots of whole grains and nuts in them. I asked my kboxing trainer what to eat in between lunch and dinner but before a workout and he said something like this was fine, or a granola bar or a Nutrigrain bar (which I love but actually are higher in sugars) or a natural carb item like fruit or veggies. So I try to keep snacking to any of those items...I''m not a huge snacker but I have found taking the bars with me to work or keeping an orange at my desk for when I am in the office really helps.

*waves*

Not doing the cardio today (we do it Sa,Sun,M,W,F) but am doing abs and arms. I''ve gotten into doing partial dips from my desk chair while I work.

As for food, I think something might be wrong with me...I''ve been getting really nauseated right before bed, or waking up feeling sick. It''s not like I have been eating a lot or bad stuff, so I am clueless. Flyfisher in his premed wisdom has decreed it to be a stomach bug, but I am a little less sanguine.

This actually happened to me a few months ago as well when I was not working out--I basically would come home at five, collapse and sleep until ten, wake up a few times feeling sick, and then sleep through most of the night. So I''m sleeping a little less now but that''s the only differance.

Any ideas, ladies? Our student health people are worse than useless unless you have a 104 fever or fake appendicitis to get them to take you seriously.

re: snacks. I do apples and walnuts. Keeps the blood sugar pretty constant, IMO. But I have to eat every 4 ish hours anyway so I don''t have "snack food" per se.

rainbow, i had a similar problem a few years ago. i'd get nauseated for days on end. it didn't seem to be what i was eating as nothing had changed in my habits. but i would get sick feeling in the car, when eating anything, even the yummiest of foods. i would never actually get SICK as in throw up, just feel constantly nauseated. it REALLY sucked. the dr's ran various tests and could find nothing wrong with me. finally they gave me anti-nausea pills which i took for a week and suddenly after that it was just GONE and i was fine again even without taking the pills. how random is that? this was about 4 years ago and i still get paranoid because we never found out what it was so what if it comes back? but our bodies are mysterious machines, that is for sure.

can you go see a dr (not student) and see what they say? the dr's i saw were stumped and thought random things like an ulcer or this or that but nothing showed up in tests and they did an ultrasound too to look for any masses i guess. good luck and keep us posted!

Rainbow, I am not saying this is what''s wrong with you - see a doc - but it could be your back. I used to get nauseated and still do last thing at night, through the night and wake up with it. This went on for years until a doctor noticed my back trouble. What was happening was that my back muscles were going into a spasm and causing the nausea - I was amazed as I always thought it was my stomach. Try and ease up on the workouts and see a doc to see if this could be a possibility, it''s worth checking. With the tiredness, fighting pain can make you exhausted and affect you in many ways. Hope this might help.

Mara, I must try those Kashi bars. Right now, I''m suffering through AdvantEdge protein bars (21g of protein per serving!), but they are a bit chalky and artificial tasting. To make matters worse, I bought them in bulk so I have to get through the box before I experiment with something else.

While on the subject of granola, however - yesterday, I stopped by Wild Oats (which is like Whole Foods here in Cincinnati) and picked up some hand-made, chocolate granola cereal. It''s a small bag, and rather pricey so I''m not sure I could eat it by the bowl each morning BUT... I find it makes for an unbelievably delicious dessert if mixed with strawberries and some light yogurt. I buy Danon''s Light&Fit which is virtually sugar free, and although, objectively speaking, it''s not as good as most of the yogurts on the market, the small amount of sugar it makes me ingest makes up for what little taste it sacrifices.

So yes, we had some organic chocolate granola, yogurt and berries for dessert yesterday and it was delightful. I find I sometimes need a dessert, but continue to look for ways of making it sensible.

Which brings me back to this question:

What is your favorite (i.e. most delicious) healthy meal/dessert? In other words, I''m looking for foods, food combinations or simple recipes that taste so good they actually make you feel like you''re endulging?

18.gif

Right now I''m baking wild salmon (to minimize PCBs) in the oven with garlic, lemon juice, some olive oil, salt & pepper...hope it turns out! For some reason I think of salmon as indulgent even though it''s healthy. Eating it w/bok choi cooked in chicken stock (that I made last week and froze) & garlic.

For dessert I love fresh strawberries...but they''re not always easy to get.

Hmm, most other delicious meals to me are all very starchy (i LOVE rice, pasta, and french fries), so not helpful on the healthy front.

I''ve just started working out again and want to participate in these threads, but I always go in the evening so by that time I figure no one reads the threads anymore :)

OMG you guys are making me hungry just listening to your descriptions!

Granola and Power Bars are wonderful, but I''m allergic to peanuts and nuts. Even if they don''t have nuts in them it often says, "manufactured on the same machinery as nuts, etc"

Jelly, this may sound odd but sometimes I just eat a slice of wheat bread for a snack and it tastes so good!! Maybe you can try that? Or what about an orange or something with a bit of taste, no protein though. A handful of turkey breast would be yummy too.

For a yummy healthy dessert I LOVE a super light angel cake with strawberries and that redi-whip...if I have to have a dessert that is typically it, and if its not angel food cake then the strawberry shortcake cakes (the ones from whole foods are less sugary than the ones from the regular supermarket) work nicely and it''s pretty healthy, the redi-whip is only something like 10 calories per tbl and 1 carb.

Sometimes if I am totally desperate for something sweet I actually just take a ''shot'' of the Rediwhip from the can, all my friends tease me about it but I love it!

Lastly, if you want just a tiny taste of something to end a craving sweet, taste a tiny bit of bittersweet or super dark chocolate like the Nibby bars from Scharffen Berger, YUM. I can really only eat a tiny square since they are SO rich and sweet but that''s all you need!

I just took a 45 minute walk on the beach, beautiful sunset. Walking briskly on the sand actually worked up a sweat comparable to when I do an easy jog. I''ve been taking it easy this week, since I was sick as hell last week. I dropped three pounds last week from not really eating. Hopefully, I''ll be able to keep my intake of calories in check and gradually increase the intensity of my workouts.

Heh, Mara, I wish I could tell my bf my weight and not have him be shocked because he thought I weighed less. He''s usually shocked when I tell him I''ve lost a couple of pounds. Moron.

Thanks, stermag!

Since it''s almost Wednesday, I better post!

I did 15 on the elliptical, 10 on the treadmill doing intervals, and then 25 on various weight machines. I''ve only been working out again for about 2 weeks (after almost a year long hiatus - I''m bad) and it''s amazing what a difference it makes!
