I did 4.84 miles around campus just now with the 20lb weights around my waist...its hot outside.
Where are all my other ladies?

I''m here!

I had my trainer this morning. It was good, but I had to sit down a couple of times (and even lay down once) because I got so lightheaded and a little naseated. Very frustrating. I just can''t do anything like intervals or sprints that really gets my heart rate up!

I was bad and lazy all weekend and basically did nothing. I really need to step it up if I''m going to lose some serious poundage by vacation (2 months)!

Matadora -- I was thinking about your weights issue -- you should try a weight vest. It really distributes the weight more evenly so you don''t strain one part of your body (ie -- ankles or wrists).

I have not been doing well on my diet at all, sometimes I have no self control. I have been excerising daily though. Today I rode my bike to work and am going to the gym afterwards. We are going to a show tonight so I''m sure I will have a drink or two..... never totally sucfessful. Need to conjure up some willpower!

AP- I have been using two ankle weights and combining them into a belt...very stylish I can assure you. I spoke to a family friend (he is a DR in sports medicine, lovely fellow). Anyway he was speaking about me so keep that in mind but he said walking with ankle weights was fun, running was a definate no no as it can really tar up my joints. He also said that I needed to only use weights which I no longer felt after about a minute or I was going to hurt myself. For wrist weights he thought that they were fine if they did not pull on my hands and he said that the neoprence ones are a great deal better for you then the ones with removable amounts of weights becuase they are more evenly distributed. I forgot to ask him about calories though....
I just looked up weight vests...and the ones I found were too much [$$)] . I paid 12$ for the 20lb ankle weights I am using as a belt and the "real" weight belts and vest are 150-200$. A bit much for me. Maybe when I get down to 140 or below I can ask my parents, for me for now that seems a bit much.
When I get to 150 I am buying myself a new pair of sneakers...

Okay since I have notcied that we have all taken ahit in terms of will power lately I think we need something to reinvigorate the group! What does everyone think would be a good idea...I love bets, (ie cleaning a friends apt if I lose...but I dont think that would translate well here on PS).
What does everyone think?

well, i haven''t done so hot recently. i had evacuees at my place all last week, and found it hard to wake up so early while they are all asleep. i knew i''d wake them...and feel horrible. so i didn''t go -so sad.

this week- i only went yesterday.... again so sad. i slept in this morning.... i will be back in the gym tomorrow and friday!

Maybe we should just make a vow that, unless we do not have access to a computer, we should post every day regarding exercise and eating. Even if we ate three chocolate cakes while watching tv and doing nothing else, we should post that... if we do 10 jumping jacks every 2 minutes all day long, we should post that too. Although I am horrible and don''t do it anymore, the thing that really helped me lose weight before was keeping a journal and seeing my accomplishments and my goals.

I think that is a great idea!

I''ve been reluctant to post here because I''m not a LIW.....but I need exercise motivation, and this seems to be the best group to do it with.

I am trying to lose the extra 8-10lbs left from having 2 kids. These are vanity lbs, but I really want to fit into size 4''s again. I have a full closet full, and I''m too cheap to buy a whole new wardrobe. Anyways, I was doing pretty good (on low carb, and started exercising 3-4 times a week for the past 2 months). I fell off the wagon over labor day weekend. I piged out on pasta, brownies, cheesecake and a ton of other unmentionables. I gained 5lb over the weekend!!!!!!!

Help me get my motivaton back please!

I forgot to add....after finding out about my 5lbs gain ths weekend, I went to the gym instead of pigging out during my lunch hour. I spent 30 minutes on the eliptical, then ran 1 mile on the treadmill, and did about 15 minutes of weight training.

I LIKE exercising it;s not a big deal for me to drag my butt to the gym. I guess my weakness is food. How do you suppress the urge to eat everything in sight after exercising really hard?

Jasonsmom -- I think that was a perfect example of why no-carb or even very low-carb diets don''t really work. They''re just not realistic. Moderation works the best. However, a good motivational saying for me is that if you don''t brush your teeth one night are you going to just give up and never brush your teeth again. No! Same with diets. If you eat lots of stuff for labor day, let it go and eat your moderated diet starting afterwards. Anyway... sorry if that came off preachy, just some thoughts.

Maybe we should move our workout posts to the Hangout section so people who are not LIWs don''t feel like they shouldn''t post?

How funny that many of us seem to be in same place regarding will power! I haven''t been posting because 1) I haven''t been exercising 2) late last week my good eating took a nose-dive
3) there is something going on with AOL & my new computer- everytime I try to post or send a pm ( Matatora, I miss our chats
1.gif
) I just get a blank screen. BF has me using explorer until he can figure it out.

I love the idea of posting every day, even if we''ve been slugs or lost control of the eating!

I had a little talk with myself on the train today (thankfully not out loud) and am refocusing once again....I made smart choices in the food department today, drank a good deal of water, wrote everything down. I walked quite a bit today visiting my accounts, but if my pedometer is correct it was less than 2,000 steps- that doesn''t seem possible. I want to aim for that 10,000 steps a day goal. Guess I better stop taking the subway!

I''m wishing everyone strength, willpower & success

Jaysons...for me I feel sick if I pig out on crap now...just because my body is not used to that stuff anymore. That is where I think going on the lower-carb/lower-fat diets can work if you don''t have TONS of self-control....you can also do moderation and then if you get out of hand and pig out, you end up feeling kind of sick and that stops you from doing it again later. Well that works for me anyway!

I personally like to think if you work out and stay active then you CAN splurge on some things. Or look at it this way. Since you only have a few lbs to lose really, why not do the Atkins or the lower-carb or Zone or something for the 2-3 weeks that it takes to jump start your body to get into that change mode, and then move to a moderation version of the diet. That is basically what I did and in the first 2-3 weeks I stuck to it and lost ~5lbs maybe and then I just went to the moderation phase. I really didn''t need to lose alot. Or try WW..my friend swears by it, she lost 10 lbs in 1.5 months and she didn''t feel deprived at all. I think if you only have up to ~10lbs to lose then it''s easier to try these diets if you can stick to them and then move to a maintenance where you can eat good stuff but some bad too!

Amanda & Mara:

Believe me, I know that Low Carb is not the ideal way to lose weight. I''m ashamed to say that I have my master''s degree in Human Nutrition...but desperate times call for desperate measures. I used to swear that I''d never go on a low carb diet. I came from the school that teaches the food pyramid for goodness sakes. However, after my kids were born, I wanted a fast, easy way to lose weight, and eat what the rest of my skinny family eats so save cooking time. Basically I''d cook a meat item, a veggie, and a carb staple (rice, pasta, bread, potato) for everyone, and I''d just skip the carb. This was most time-efficient way, and was effective (I saw co-workers lose a ton of weight doing low carb). It''s really hard for me because I have a husband who loves junk food (and doesn''t gain a pound) and 2 kids who don''t need to diet, so everything in the house has fat....whole milk, real cheese, real butter.

I also thought I could eat everything now that I''m working out so much, but that''s not the case. prime example being this weekend....I worked out for 40 minutes at the gym on Friday & Saturday. On Sunday I took the kids to the pool, and did a few laps (maybe 10-20) and Monday I jogged 2 miles around a lake. I guess what really did me in was going from low carb to HEAVY carb binging

. I know not to do that again.

BTW, how do you train yourself to eat less, or feel sick from eating junk? I eat a ton, not laylike at all.

Personally I don''t keep sweets in the house really. Sure we have some ice cream and we have some chocolate and I have cookie mixes etc but I just don''t make them or use them. Also Greg does not need to lose weight or maintain or anything, he has a high metabolism and works out like a fiend rowing, but he eats what I eat. He can get his fill of pizza and other crap at lunch at work or whatever. He even goes and has breakfast sometimes by himself during the weeks! But I figure hey if I am going to buy the food and/or make it then we both eat the same stuff. That way it''s less painful for me too. It would be hard for me to have willpower if he was chowing on a pot pie and I was eating grilled fish!

Part of what works for me is that I don''t have a super STRICT diet. aka we have fish and veggies about 3 days a week, I eat egg whites for breakfast 5 days a week and have salads for lunch 4-5 days a week. The other 4 nights of the week I eat whatever I want, sometimes it''s pretty healthy like a burrito with meat, rice, beans and salsa and sometimes it''s a full on burger from St. Johns with fries and ranch! But I think part of why it works for me is that I don''t DEPRIVE myself with a strict schedule, I just go by how I feel.

I think everyone has their own recipe for success, whether it be workouts or food but this is how I make it work for me. Sure I have fallen off the wagon, aka all last winter I thought I could eat whatever I wanted and not exercise even though I KNEW I couldn''t. Well it took about 3 months but I gained 10 lbs and come spring I felt like a cow. I was eating pot pies, fast food all the time, ice cream, mac and cheese, comfort food. But now that it''s been about 3-4 months since I started eating better again...if I have fast food I almost feel sick because of how heavy I feel afterwards! Sure it tastes good going down but that''s about it. But last winter, I never thought about if it felt good or not, only that I wanted it and didn''t want to be DEPRIVED.

Part of what works is not keeping alot of crap in the house. I also don''t drink sodas or alot of alcohol at all. I think what you said about eating but cutting out the carb is really smart personally. The food pyramid IMO is kind of old school! I think everyone''s body is different...it''s evidenced by how some things work for some but not others. I don''t believe in all of one thing or another aka fat or carb or none, but more a balance that works for you. Carbs go straight to my waist, no passing GO. So I have cut out ALOT of carbs and breads and pastas etc. I don''t really miss them all that much. I still have them sometimes but it''s not a focus at all. I''d rather have a dessert than bread at dinner and I used to do both.

Anyway I''ll stop babbling now. I don''t know if any of this helps.

Oh FFF- I have been missing you too! I am sorry to hear about your computer issues, no good.

How does evyone want to do the posting? Who all wants to do it?

I just went 7.63 miles with 20lbs around my waist and 5 on my wrists (combined). It feels good to get moving but I am not losing an ounce, not even a 1/10 of a pound.
7.gif
My body is being quite stubborn. I have decided to go and see my grandparents this weekend and bring my food with me so that I only have soo much to eat the whole weekend. I am hoping to jump start my weight loss again. I dont want to do Atkins, but it was working and nothing else has...

??????? I don''t think low carb is a bad way to lose weight at all, provided you''re not living on bacon and butter.

I don''t have much time to reply (exams!!!), but just wanted say (re: the carb binging): The reason you gain so much weight following lots of carbs is that they make you retain a lot more water. If you get back on track the next day, the water weight will fall back off.

I eat pretty similarly to Mara, but a bit more strict. Good stuff most of the time, and then a splurge here or there for something that is worth it! But as your found out, the key to not putting on 5 lbs overnight is not splurging on EVERYTHING at the same time

Well I did awful at dinner, we had a Bloomin Onion and I had a kids burger ate about half of it. I lack will power. I also drank 8 glasses of unsweet tea. I have been sooo thirsty lately. Joesph came back home with me and we walked about 6 miles, give or take due to lack of pedometer. I only grabbed my 5lb weights and I didnt even sweat so yea... I am wondering how much good I am doing with my walking. I mean I am not going very fast and I am not losing weight...

Mat- I don''t think you lack willpower, but I do think you need a better plan.

You''re doing so much great work with the exercise (and walking IS good exercise!). Why waste that hard work by eating things that you KNOW are not going to help you lose weight? If you know that you cannot resist XXX at Outback, then don''t put yourself in the position of making that choice. Eventually, your choices will be second nature and XXX won''t tempt you anymore.

That''s an awful lot of tea to drink at dinner! Have you ever had your blood sugar levels checked?

Seems to me if you are walking ~11 miles a day you would be very thirsty?!

That said, when you said that you walked 6 miles with weights and didn't break a sweat...how fast are you going? When I started walking and really saw results, I was doing not quite speed walking (I think that looks funny!) but I was really going fast. I have long legs and tend to stride anyway so I just kind of get out there and GO. Sometimes Portia can't even keep up with me unless she is trotting. I usually break a sweat before the first mile is over, even if it's not hot outside. Sometimes I carry Portia when she gets tired (17 lb weight baby!) and I really have a hard time keeping my fast pace and I sweat alot more then obviously. I don't hold her for very long but when you mention that you aren't sweating after 6 miles...I think you need to drop the weights and up the pace personally. That would be my first thing is to get your pace up naturally walking with no weights. When I was doing that, I noticed an improvement in my BUTT first and foremost, it got alot less bubbly (but it's still there) and also my legs..calves and thighs trimmed out a bit. And I was only doing 1-2 miles a day!

Seriously I feel like if you are walking 11 miles a DAY it HAS to be doing something...so if you are not seeing results then something is not going right IMO and you are just spending alot of your time strolling around. Do your legs and butt hurt the next day? Mine are pretty sore after 3 miles the next day, even after I have been doing it for months now.

I'd up that pace and break a sweat and see what starts to happen. If you can't do it with the weights, then drop them and try doing some fast walking with that 11mile schedule and see how your body feels, I bet it will be different.

As for the willpower...I hear alot of TALK but no ACTION!!! Didn't I just say last week that you should start going to healthier places for dinner? If people want to go out to a Outback or whatever, then YOU and your boyfriend go to sushi or something else. Seriously....I agree that you are doing all this work and spending all this time obsessing on this and then you sabotage things with your eating. It's not rocket science. You have to do both if you want to lose the amount of weight you want to lose. If you just wanted to drop 5 lbs then maybe you could do it with what you are doing now, but maybe not even then. Start planning out your meals or schedule them. I know it's harder when you are younger...I used to have less 'control' over where I went or what I ate but if you really want to do this, then put your money where your mouth is!

Oh I dont drink anything that has sugar in it..ever. Yucky! I do drink a ton of water and unsweet tea and I am trying to cut back in my Diet Coke intake..but it is soo good.
30.gif

I cannot go anywhere with BF since he is in a diffrent state...at to be honest we dont eat out alot when we are together becuase we would rather be able to just chat and sit outside. I eat really well when he is around because he is so supportive... and my friends who are all stick thin think I have lost my mind to want to lose weight...one more person tells me I am pretty the way I am...argghhh.

My legs are strong and muscular...7 miles usally take about hour and half sometimes 2 hrs...it kinda depends on traffic. Sometimes I get stuck waiting for a light to turn. I will strech out. I am not prone to muscle soreness. I would do the failure stuff with my trainer and lose cordination in the shower trying to wash my hair...but my arms would not feel sore. I am funny that way. I also dont tend sto sweat much evening when I run and I get so tired I can barely move My face will sweat and my cheast a little but most of me doesnt. Heavier people can be in much better shape then thinner ones. Oh and I only ate like three bites of the onion...

Okay well....I guess the question is...

If you only ate 'three bites of the onion' then why do you feel that you did badly on eating? Since the way you wrote it originally made it sound horrible. But yet then later you say..well I ONLY...as if it's acceptable after all.

Then you said earlier that 'I didn't even sweat'...which makes it seem like you feel you SHOULD sweat, but then when I said that YES you should be sweating so maybe yuo need to alter something and/or walk faster you say 'well I don't normally sweat'. So then why would not sweating be an issue up above.

So what is it? I'm confused. You sound as though you are doing badly on eating and not working out the right way but then when I say yes it sounds like that is true maybe you can alter something, you say..well it's really not.
33.gif

Hmmmm, I am confused also. With all that walking you should see some results and yes you should break a sweat, IMHO. Maybe you are going to slow??? Also with those weights on you I would think you would definitely see results by now.

Mat, I''m kinda thinking maybe get rid of the weights and just bump up the pace! You''re in good enough shape to get good distance under your belt...do you run at all? If not, maybe trying to throw some runs in, or do intervals where you walk/run/walk etc. to mix things up and get your body back on fat-burning track!

I always HATED running in the past, but I decided that, since running IS really the most efficient form of cardio you can do to lose the fat, I would start incorporating it into my workouts. A couple of weeks ago I got motivated to make myself into a real "runner," bought some great shoes, and found an excellent training program, which i''m in the middle of right now. It''s called the "Couch to 5K" or C25K for short. I was already off the couch in the sense that I have been working out pretty regularly for years, so I started on Week 3 of the program instead of Week 1. You can find it here, if you''re interested: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

I NEVER thought I''d enjoy running...but since I''ve been doing it for a couple weeks now, I''ve made dramatic improvement in endurance, and I''ve really learned how to enjoy it! I find myself itching to go running every day...and trust me, I wouldn''t have EVER believed that I would actually WANT to run!!!

Anyway, just my .02...thought I''d share because starting running has really jumpstarted my old, tired workout plan!

I wish I could run!!

Too much figure skating has left me with cartilage damage, esp in my right knee. Running = owwwww. I wish I could though, because it''s such an easy way to get cardio in.

I wish there was a rink that I had easy access to though- then I could skate for cardio, and that is not work at ALL.. just fun! I guess that''s really the secret to exercise- doing something that doesn''t seem like work or get too boring. Maybe when I start my residency we will have to look for a house that''s near a rink...

icekid,
There is a great rink in Ardmore, have you been to that one??? I spent my childhood figure skating there and got up at 6:00 to skate before school. Had to give it up as my grades strated to slip from me being too tired to keep up the pace.

Mara, becuase the food mad me feel sick..and the time I didnt sweat was when I was going withot the weights. And yes sometimes eating greasy foods just flat out upsets my stomach...I dont eat them all that often so they hit me kinda hard. Sorry if I confused you.

Oh sorry guys...I get it now. I have gone down a dress size I am seeing results in terms of inches just not in weight.

Inches are gooooood :)

ETA: less of them, that is! :)

Mat,

The problem may simply be that you are not eating enough. This summer I couldnt loose weight and I was going to the gym 5 days a week, working out with a trainer 2. I was logging all my food, and making fairly healthy choices staying at around 1,100 calories a day. My trainer couldnt figure out why I wasnt dropping more weight. She did a body gem test on me, and it turns out that my body burns 1325 calories just sitting around (standing metabolic rate). So now i am eating more food, and I have lost 10 pounds this summer, eating more healthy food also keeps you from snacking.

Just some info. But if you have lost a dress size and feel yourself getting stronger, maybe you are where I am now and it just isnt happening fast enough.

Good luck with your eating this weekend!
