Hi girls! Just thought I''d start the thread for once. Well, it''s 12:15 a.m., Thursday morning, and I just got back from my Wednesday night workout (20 min elliptical, 25 min jogging, inner thigh strengthening, and 200 crunches.)

My afternoon plans will be to aim for one hour cardio, treadmill and elliptical combo. So how''s everyone doing so far?

Wow, earliest start yet, Cinderella.

I''m about to go to the gym (waiting for my workout buddy to show up), so we can do some weights. I overslept again this morning - while my body has gotten used to waking up shortly before 6, now that we''ve switched to DST, I keep waking up a few minutes before 7am... and then rushing like crazy just to make it here before 730. tsk tsk tsk.

Alright, gotta run. I''ll post later.

12:15am- and I thought I was pushing it with 6 am! Oh man, this morning was killer! I really need to go to bed earlier. But I did get up, and we power walked about 2 miles. Sometimes it''s really hard to get motivated, but once I''m up I''m always glad I didn''t go for that extra 30 minutes of sleep. A good walk in the morning is a nice way to start the day!

wow - midnight workouts! the only time i ever did that was in undergrad, during finals our school kept the gym open 24 hrs a day and sometimes it helped alleviate some stress...do you normally workout both in the afternoons and the late evenings?

yesterday after work, i did 40 minutes of pretty rigorous elliptical. it felt good.

eating has been in line. going to stick to it over the weekend (i hope)

I must admit I never made it to the gym yesterday... was finishing my taxes when boy came home with a headache so we decided to delay. But he got rid of a headache so we had a bit of a workout of our own, which was awesome but probably not quite enough cardio.

Anyway, I don''t regret it for a second. Back to the gym tonight.

Well, I have not worked out once this week. I have been sick and still not feeling so good. I took off yesterday from work and came back today. Not so sure that was a good idea yet. If I get better this afternoon, I may try a workout, otherwise, hopefully I can get in Fri. and Saturday although I''m not going to push it this week.
Sorry nothing better to report.
Glad so many are doing so well! Keep it up and I plan to be back on track soon! Welcome to the new members!

Thought I would pop in, haven''t much to offer with the way things have been recently, but I am still on track and busy spring cleaning the house for when Hubby comes home, so that is my exercise taken care of. Lots of stretches taking down and laundering curtains and then the worst part - ironing them - ugh! I have also been cleaning windows which burns off a few more calories.

On a good note, as the weather has warmed up a bit I bought some new polo and T shirts last week ready for summer. I bought this Levi''s T shirt which is fitted with shorter sleeves and I was amazed to see how nice it looked! It is a great feeling when you look wistfully at different styles and finally they look right! So worth the work. I think it was Tacori said that maintaining your figure is work, but feeling bad about your body is even worse and she is right.

Keep going ladies, you are all doing so well! And Mat, if you are reading this, thanks for the FLYLady link, it has got me super motivated - good figure AND a clean house!

Lorelei - after Mat posted that link, I went home that night & shined my sink....my fi came home & says, "Man, the sink is sooo shiny! What did you do?!?!" heheh, it was worth it :-).

I''ll prob. head to the gym tonight after work. We need to go grocery shopping, as we are low on most supplies. I don''t like to buy vegetables/fruit at the big grocery store, because they never seem to last more than 2 days. I went to this Farmer''s market by my parents house (about 20 min. from ours) and those lasted 2 weeks! And it was cheaper! So I may have to head over there too. Thank god tomorrow is Friday!

Someone brought donuts into work today - they look good, but I really don''t want one. It''ll be a small accomplishment if I don''t break down & eat one during the 3pm sugar rush

Does anyone have a good routine for upper body exercises? Right now I''m kind of doing my own thing, but I''m curious as to what everyone else does. I prefer free weights to machines, but I''m very intrigued by that cable pulley thing.

Alright, I''ve rambled long enough. Have a good day ladies!

Stermag- you''re a runner, right? Maybe you can help me out. Have you ever heard of compartment snydrome? My podiatrist suspects I have it, which totally sucks, b/c I''m just coming off a 5 month layoff due to a stress fracture/hamstring pull.

you girls sure are chipper this morning!! well it''s 9am here and i walked ~2-2.5m last nite with Portia, the weather was nice, yay and warm and it wasn''t raining, i love the time change thing too....it''s sunny this morning again (though we hear rain is on the way) so if it holds then i''ll be out walking again this late afternoon, hoping to do the full 3m today...!!

we had sushi last nite and i just had 5 slices of turkey breast for lunch yesterday during a busy day, but surprisingly enough i wasn''t STARVING by 5pm. i actually made it to sushi without wanting to snack! i typically get spicy tuna rolls and things like the rainbow roll with raw fish on top etc, was totally craving fresh fish last nite!

and man can i just say i am SOO jazzed with the changes in my butt and thighs from all this walking. it''s really leaning me out which i need and want!! bikini legs here i come!!

Mara- how fast do you walk? Walking is my exercise of choice but I feel like I might not be doing enough to eventually see a difference. My fiance likes to jog, but I just don''t like it at all, but at least after jogging I feel beat- when I go for a walk I feel strong but also like I could for a long, long time. Just curious as to how you''ve seen results!

sarah, it''s taken me a LONG time to see results, i have been walking for a year now pretty steadily but have only really seen changes in the last 2-3 months especially with more diet changes. sometimes i walk faster and other times i go more normal speed. i just did a 5k and finished in 45 minutes...so i do about 13 minute mile i guess? nothing super impressive...but a friend told me that in general the lower impact longer term kind of workouts (aka where you walk for an hour or 2 hours) are better at leaning you out than something like kickboxing where you do it for 45 minutes very intensely. kind of interesting, who knows for sure, everyone''s bodies are different but i walk about 3-4 times a week for about 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on the day and what is going on (aka sometimes i do a mile then stop to talk to a friend, sometimes i just do 3 miles straight at a quick pace etc).

i personally think that if someone does not have good eating habits and tries to walk alot to lose weight they won''t because walking in and of itself is not a huge calorie burner, but if you are already eating more healthily and doing the consistent walking, IMO that could be a recipe for success if you can stick with it.

the funny thing is that some days i feel like my muscles are loose and limber and i don''t get sore and other days when i am doing the faster walking, my legs work harder and i can feel the burn a bit more the next day.

i also do alot of leg exercises like squats and the air kicks i mentioned in a few posts so i think that between the walking and the exercises i do like 3-4 times a week at home i think it''s finally making a difference esp in my butt (it''s getting flatter!) and my upper thighs.

Logan, I''m SO sorry I didn''t see your post until just now. I also haven''t heard much about compartment syndrome, but I understand it has to do with swelling of the muscles in your leg which causes nerves and blood vessels to be compressed. Has your doctor indicated to you how serious the situation is? What symptooms are you experiencing that have led him to this diagnosis?

I will keep checking the thread awaiting your response, and also see what info I can dig up online.

The dr. said he wanted me to sit out for about 7 weeks and put me on a walking program before he orders the tests, which involves sticking needles into your muscles before and after running to measure the pressure. Ouch.

As I said, I was out for about 4.5 months or so due to a lovely tibial sfx and hamstring pull in my right leg. I didn''t run at all during that time. When I started back, I was using Cool Running''s Couch to 5k which only has you running like a min. or two when starting out. I noticed that even after just 2 mins. of continuous running, my left anterior shin muscle would start tightening up very painfully, and then my foot would go numb and tingle and it''d start flapping around like I had no control over it.
15.gif
I''d have to stop running.

I shouldn''t have done it, but I started trying to do the 5k program again, and the first few times I was ok, but yesterday, I was out in the cold, and I don''t think I had properly warmed up and wasn''t wearing warm enough clothes. It started hurting again, and now I feel thoroughly discouraged.

Logan,

I''m very sorry to hear this. I read up a bit on the syndrome, so I have some idea of what occurs, but I am not at all an expert and certainly not qualified to give any advice. In fact, I am reluctant to even give you pointers, as only your doctor can really assess the situation. I do really feel for you, though.

I wish there were a way for us to exchange e-mail addresses, as I''d love to expand a bit on this, but the one time I tried posting mine in a message, the admin quickly deleted my post and emailed me letting me know it''s not allowed. How are people exchanging this type of information on this forum?

Anyway, the only running pains I''ve experienced in the past have been some shin splints, but in retrospect, I believe this was largely due to the fact that I started too quickly, on hard surfaces, and without stretching at all. This was three years ago. This time around, I started much slower (using that same 5K program, in fact) and pay attention to warming up before and after each run, although I don''t think I do enough of it, even now. At the moment, I''m dealing with a case of plantar fasciitis in my right foot. I''ve found some things to alleviate the pain a bit, and it isn''t too bad, but still bothersome. I haven''t seen anybody about it, but perhaps I will consider doing so.

I say that I feel for you because I''ve come to understand the frustration of not being able to run/work out. When my heel aches began, I instinctively knew I should take it easy for a bit, but there is such a strong force pushing you to keep going, particularly when you have a set goal. We need to consider the price we might be forced to pay if we keep pushing against better judgement, though. I don''t know how bad the extreme cases of plantar fasciitis get - I know some require surgery. Compartment syndrome is nothing to scoff at either. I am guessing yours is a manageable case since your Dr. put you on a walking program, and not straight into an OR, so keep your chin up. What doesn''t kill you, as they say... and I truly believe this. Let''s hope that, in the end, these will simply go into the books as battle wounds, obstacles we''ve overcome to become better... at whatever it is we''re aiming to become.

Actually, I was really flattered by the fact that you referred to me as a runner. In my mind, I have not earned the label yet. I honestly don''t even know what it takes to feel like one. I guess, on most weeks, I do ~15 miles, but I still feel like an impostor. Why? Probably because I have a mental image of what a runner looks like and I don''t quite fit the bill.... but that''s neither here nor there.

I hope you recover quickly. If you have an idea of how to exchange email addresses (and are so inclined), I''m all ears.

Mag

Hmm...who has my email address somewhere? Virgina, Lmurden, SevensOne (I can''t remember if she does or not), Kaleigh, DiamondLil, OldFashionedGirl, GemKltr... Do you have any of their''s?

I have NOBODY''s.

I guess I''m not part of the in crowd.
