dark shadow in excellent cut GIA diamond

Hi,

I have a round brilliant ring that shows a dark shadow in the centre unless it is under bright light. If I tilt the ring the shadow gets quite large.

The ring is meant to be excellent in all regards, including cut, but everything I have read indicates that this problem is only supposed to occur in inferior cut diamonds. It does not look like a fisheye or nail head from pictures I have seen, but more like light leakage or windowing through the bottom of the diamond. Does anyone else have this problem? I'm really worried because the dark shadow is very obvious and I feel like we may have been ripped off.

I would be so thankful if anyone could give me any insights at all based on the specs below:

GIA certified
Round brilliant
7.61 - 7.65 x 4.67mm
1.70 carat
colour D
clarity si1
cut excellent
total depth 61.2%
table size 59%
crown angle 35 degrees
crown height 14.5%
pavillion angle 40.6 degrees
pavillion depth 42.5%
star length 55%
lower half 80%
girdle medium - slightly thick, faceted (4%)
cutlet none
polish excellent
symmetry very good
fluorescence faint

Any pictures? Have you considered getting it checked out by an independent appraiser?

Thank you for your responses.

The photos I have taken don't show the problem but I will try again tomorrow in different lighting.

Sometimes the dark shadow looks as if it is a reflection of a large culet, however my diamond does not have a culet. The problem is particularly evident if I cusp my hand around the diamond to block the light.

In bright light the diamond looks great, this problem seems to occur in dim lighting or indoors where there is no fluorescent lighting.

Hold a piece of bright red or blue paper in front of the diamond.
Does the dark area turn the color of the paper?
Does the dark area go away at arm length?

I would like to know the answer to this as well. Funny because now I am noticing the same issue with my stone and it wasn't there when I saw the stone without the setting, then once it was set I noticed it more and more. I am contemplating taking my stone back to jewler next week to see what he says.
Good luck and please keep us posted what you find out.

I apologize, I misread your original post and thought that you were seeing this in direct sunlight. I'm interested in hearing what you learn as well.

Hi Karl,

When holding a bright red piece of paper in front of the diamond the dark spot stays darks. The spot is still there at arms length.

Is it possible it could be a dark table reflection?

Nothing wrong with the stone on paper, I'd definitely be interested in photos. It couldn't be an inclusion reflecting, could it?

Any more follow-up on what the dark shadow is?

Mine turns purple in direct lighting.
