I''ve been wearing my beautiful danburite around a lot and it gives me so much pleasure. It''s light performance is great, but very different from a diamond (sparkly, but more white light than fire...though I have seen what looks like fire too!).

Still, most people don''t know much about scintillation and fire and the things that diamonds do - hey, I''m still learning myself - and most people (even a jeweler in a nice shop I went into recently!) have never heard of danburites.

So, I''ve now had 3 people compliment me on my ENORMOUS diamond (the stone is 3.88ct, and roughly 12x8mm). And I keep explaining to them that it''s a gemstone called danburite and how you can tell. The thing is yesterday a lady said ''Honey, be careful wearing that beautiful rock around!'' That kind of scared me. Wouldn''t it be ironic to get mugged for an $85 gemstone?

So, I think I''m going to be more careful where and when I wear it. What a shame.

IG...I love your story!

I went and looked for a picture of your ring, and alas found none.

You simply MUST post pictures!!! Your posts just whet my interest. Why haven''t we heard more about this stone????

Argh, sorry! The thing is that the digital camera belongs to FF, who has been overseas for a little over three weeks now WITH the camera. But he''s coming home in a few days (yay!) so I''ll be able to get some pics for y''all soon.

I''m just dying to see it too :)
I hear white zircons can also have a diamond type look to them.

I think white zircons are supposed to look MORE like a diamond than danburites, as I understand diamonds and zircons refract light similarly. I think it''s more a matter of most people not knowing much about diamonds, and they see a white sparkly stone and just assume it''s a diamond! Too bad for me if it means I have to be nervous about wearing my gem.

Widget,
There''s a bad photo (taken by me, of course) on my thread of mine.

After reading this thread about Danburites, I was "inspired" to buy 2 off ajsgems.com - a round Portuguese cut and a radiant. The service at AJS is incredibly quick. I placed my order and within 2 hours, they had shipped it off to me. I should get them soon since they''re based in Bangkok.

DiaDiva,
Have you ever gone stone hunting on Serangoon road?

No, Harriet. I''ve never bought any stones/jewellery from Serangoon Road. Are they any good? I usually buy from my jeweller since he either comes to my home or office... so I''m spoilt!

I can''t remember but have you set your danburite? I''m going to set the round Portuguese in an existing solitaire setting that I already have but need to think about the radiant - probably a split prong. Here''s the solitaire setting which used to hold my mum''s diamond.

I don''t know. DF went on a tour of Little India and said that there were shops selling gems. What a great jeweller you have!

I''ve actually returned my danburite. I second the solitaire setting for the round. What type of split prong do you have in mind?

Do give me a hand with me settings, please.

Hmmm....why did you return the danburite? Was there something about it that bugged you? I''m worried now since I didn''t just go out and buy one, I bought two!

Will show you handshots when I get the stones.

It looked too much like a diamond, if that makes sense. I kindof miss it, though.

Mine since they are smaller really do look a bit like diamonds... which is why I like them unset... they are fun to play with. Are a real stone, but I don't have to worry about the the cost of them. I put them on paper and design settings for them and I don't think I would feel comfortable if they were really diamonds.

Actually, that makes sense to me, and it''s why I haven''t gotten one, even though I think they''re very pretty and I have a setting in need of a stone.

I completely understand that too. I actually don''t think it looks like a diamond... if you know what a diamond looks like, but now that I realize that others might think it''s a diamond it makes me nervous, and the idea that others might think I''m trying to pass it OFF as a diamond rather embarasses me. But, its little pink glow in sun and its bright whiteness in cloudy weather make me happy, so I''ll still wear it for my own pleasure (when it''s safe) and not worry too much about what others might think! I guess... but maybe it''ll wear me down after a while.

Now I miss the one I had.

Of course it''s alright to ask. I''d like to set my coloured stones.

Hmmm...would danburite have a similar effect in a solitaire pendant? I''d love one but can''t afford the real thing (the whole house/wedding business, ya know). Could this be the way to go?

Richard M. has a beautiful oval danburite that would make a great pendant.

Thanks for the heads up, Harriet! I haven't had any luck getting onto their site. I will try again later. Maybe I need to start a new post for this little project idea instead of hijacking from IG...sorry!

Just e-mail him. He''s great.

This doesn''t make sense. I don''t understand.
