I believe it's a 6.5 on the Moh's scale. It's definitely less than a 7 on the Moh's scale, and as a result, it can be easily scratched, and even chipped.

I just realized how crass I must have sounded in re-reading my post. I'd like to apologize to the owner of that gorgeous demantoid and ring if I brought up a painful reminder.

Demantoid is very soft. Set at your own risk. I've seen several vintage rings with heavily abraded/chipped demantoid. It's rare for them to survive unscathed. Demantoid can be set by a jeweler who is versed in softer stones, but accidents happen.

My take on it is that it is too expensive and rare to risk it - especially if the colour is really good.

If I want to take risks with stones I would set a sphene - they're spectacular and if tragedy occurs then they don't require a bank loan to replace.

I'd only set them into a ring if you aren't very 'attached' to it/them. I had JKT bezel mine and she did a fabulous job! Even though I'm careful and only wear the ring on special occassions I've still managed to scratch one of the demantoids. They're gorgeous stones though and I only see the scratch/abrasion upon very close inspection.

I am not a big pendant person (I have pearls for my neck) and I was seriously considering a demantoid for a ring.

It would kill me if it was chipped, since it would be a stretch for me.

I have put a lot of them in rings with just one mishap when I had a helper, the polishing rouge can abrade them. They are a 6.5 to 7 on Mohs. Lots of softer and more delicate stones get put in rings. A rub over setting or some other protective setting may be a good idea but it is way tougher than Sphene. Best regards, Lee

Lee, can you explain what a rub over setting is? I'm wondering if its what I'm thinking (a bezel setting with high walls)

You are correct, a rub over is one that the bezel is higher than the gem, no good for letting light in a dark gem but fine for the extra sparkling gems like Demantoid and Sphene that only need a hint of light to flash you.

It depends on how often you wear it and how hard you are with your hands. I have one in a cushion shape as an anniversary ring but it does have double rounded prongs and is set very low to the finger. So far, no mishaps *knocks on wood*


I'm real careful with it though and take it off when I am working with my hands.

It will come as no surprise to regular CS'ers that I have a number of demantoids set into rings! Yes I wear them. No I don't panic (well not too much anyway)!

I'm of the view that for those who want lovely jewellery and not just loose stones then sometimes it's best to take the risk but then have (potentially) much more enjoyment from being able to wear those gorgeous stones on occasion!

I'm with LD. I have 3 demantoid rings that I wear frequently.

iLander I don't regret setting my Demantoid and I would have gotten over the chips if the vendor acted professionally and didn't treat me like dirt and threatened to sue me afterwards. Anyway as Lee point out it's the polishing part that went wrong and the man himself supposedly polished it. Too late now but when I find a vendor I absolutely trust I'll reset it.

My advice - and I have a demantoid pendant - do not make a ring if the stone is of substantial size. I am quite careful with my stones, but even I managed recently to bang my hand against a wall corner. Things happen, and it is a very, very sensitive stone. Mine has a long bail, and an enhancer. I can wear it low on my neck (chest, actually), or put on a string of thin pearls. Knowing how expensive and rare they are, I'd better not risk.
