I was given some sleepy Tanzanian spinels to work with, and have been experimenting for the past week on low temp (1100C) heat treatment. From the research I've seen, degradation in colour starts over 1400C and it is sometimes possible to remove much of the silkiness at a lower temperature.
Even with quite long holds (10 hours at 1100C) there was absolutely no improvement in the silkiness, but also no degradation in colour.
That testing was at the limits of my furnace and patience
I'm not set up to run different gas environments, or temperatures about 1100C.
Cheers,
Lisa
