Hi. My husband surprised me with a pair of princess cut diamond earrings, .81tw. The receipt says near colorless and SI1 clarity. One of the earrings looks a shade more yellow than the other. The cuts of the diamond also look different. One of them looks similar to my engagement ring, and the other one looks much different. I guess that I am wondering if diamond earrings should match more closely. Or, maybe it doesn''t matter because they are on 2 different ears. What do people think? We have 14 days to exchange or return. Each earrings looks very nice on their own, but different when placed next to each other. Other experiences with diamond earrings?

Thanks!

put em on and have hubby stand at conversation distance.
Can he see the difference?
Yes then return for sure.
No then only return if it bugs you.

I would return them. It would bug me to no end if my two diamonds didn''t match. Just because they are earrings and sit apart doesn''t mean that one has to be lower quality than the other, IMO.

Can you post a pic of them side by side (just having a hard time figuring out what you mean my them looking different)? Strmrdr''s suggestion is a good one, but I personally would probably take them back. There MUST be two diamonds out there that match and will make you happy!

I would return the earrings. Probably others would not notice the color difference, it would bother me knowing that they are different colors. Abbott

I, too, would love to see a photo (or two!)

But bottom line, if it bothers you, then definitely return/exchange them. Personally, it would drive me *bonkers* knowing that they were not very well "matched". When I got my studs, believe me, I agonized over and BELABORED all available choices to get a *perfect match*. (What???! No one is SURPRISED???!)

I agree with the others here, if they bother you then return them while you still have that option. To me diamond earrings should not look different from each other to the naked eye. If it is that obvious to you that they look different, you are probably not going to be happy with them. I wouldn''t be.

I am sorry but I would return them. Maybe no one else can tell the earrings are not the same, however if you don''t love them at first sight you might never like them.

You might take the return money and wait till you see some earring you absolutely LOVE.

One of my favorite sayings is "Never Settle".

Get what you want and do not be happy to settle for less.

Take them back. They should match. I have two pairs of diamond stud earrings, one certed and one uncerted. The uncerted ones (princess cut) match each other visually (size and color) and the certed ones (rb) do visually and by the cert. I can''t imagine why anyone would pair diamonds that didn''t match into earrings. Doesn''t matter if they''re on seperate ears. Sounds like there''s a difference in the cut quality if they look different than each other too.

I agree with everyone and say take them back since they obviously bother you.

IMO, diamond earrings should match better than what you have.

Hi. Thanks for all your advice. I don''t have a picture because our 3.2 megapixel camera can''t take very good closeup pictures. I think that my husband is going to go back and exchange them. I''m glad to hear that I am not being picky about them.

That''s good that he will take them back. I always say, if it bugs you now, it will bug you down the road. I''m sure he paid a pretty penny for them and you need to love them. Let us know how it goes!!!

You are not being too picky, it would really bother me if the two earrings didn''t match, both colorwise and cutwise. Get them changed to your satisfaction. You should love your earrings, not feel irritated at all.

Yep I agree with Min, that would drive me bonkers - I would HAVE to change them.....good luck!

Not everyone puts up with unmatched stones - and for good reason. Even if those may pass as a match when worn... who needs it

''Near colorless'' (H-J) in that size shouldn''t show any color face up. It wouldn''t be so unusual that a shop''s grades are a bit ''approximate'' for such items though - at best, the price reflects that, but that ''best''

doesn''t always happen either.

IMO, return and get similar from a shop that takes more pride in what they sell

Don''t give it another thought. Send them back ASAP. They are definitely not acceptable like that.

Hi Midnight,
I agree with "take them back for an exchange." Insurance appraisals on diamond earrings from the seller usually show color and clarity as an "average" of both diamonds. In many cases, the two diamonds actually are different grades. Unfortunately, great care is not always taken when matching diamonds for earrings. Usually the most important matching features are diameter, color, then clarity...depth is not quite as noticeable in an earring. You should definately find a pair that pleases you and your husband the most!

i imagine that at the store where these came from there is a confused sales clerk or jeweler looking at a pair of studs, thinking the exact same thing....guessing that two pairs of earrings got switched.

Excellent observation! We don''t know that this is indeed the case here. As a former retail jewelry sales manager/district manager, I can assure you that during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season that YES this did occasionally happen! Usually, mismatches pop up during the dreaded January inventory.

My husband talked to the jeweler today who said no problem. He can go and make sure that we get two diamonds that match. My husband ordered them via the phone, so it was kinda his fault for not going. He works super long hours, so I can''t blame him for not having the time! (now he is making the time to make sure that I love them)

Thanks for all your thoughts!
