Mayk, I am in love with that one! So I should make an offer first then if it's still over my budget do the layaway?

Call Grace. She is so awesome and easy to work with. A highly recommended vendor here.

I actually looked at a close up of the center diamond on that one and it had a lot of inclusions, or at least it looked like it.

Interesting David Atlas calls it eye clean in his evaluation. Well trusted appraiser on this site. Blown up you will see items that are not picked up with the naked eye. I see you are a new poster. I would have no problem trusting David's word.

Ask Grace she will tell you straight. You also get a three day inspection period.

I like it with this one, which could be millgrained for free, and with the referral discount would be less than 2k

Love that ring, Niel!

This would be lovely and give nice finger coverage.

I think Niel has the winner. After talking with JA on live chat, with the halo that ring would measure 10.5mm x 10.5mm which would be great finger coverage and with the referral discount it would be $1965! Thanks so much everyone! It wouldn't ship until Nov. 6th if I was able to order it today so it'll be a while, but I'll try to come back and post a pic of the finished product :)

I still need those alternate round stone recommendations in case *gasp* this one is sold before I can get to it.

Great!

Ask them to put it on hold for you while you make a decision on a setting. They will hold for 24 or 48 hours (I forget which).

She said they wouldn't let her

New policy for 2015 apparently and no advantage discounts any more. Told me the only discount they offer is the 1.5% for wire transfer.

Well I know they have that refferal one still, right? You have to get a code for that.

I got an advantage discount four weeks ago (but the stone was a lot more $$) so that part isn't true...

I'd drop down in color and clarity and get the largest and best-cut diamond possible, and not put it in a halo.
Why?
IMO one well-cut round (even with less finger coverage) will have a much better light show, overall, than a smaller center stone in a melee halo.

Next halo's cost money in labor that could have been put into a single larger diamond.
With one single diamond, say a 0.7 J SI1,the size of each flash of light will be greater.
Bigger substantial flashes make the diamond seem bigger.

Jamesallen has this 0.7 J SI1 with an HCA of 1.4 for $1700.
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/0.70-carat-j-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-515859
That leaves $300 for a solitaire setting, which start at $180 at the same vendor.
http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/14k-white-gold-2mm-knife-edge-solitaire-engagement-ring-item-7115

Gets you an excellently-cut diamond of twice the size (weight actually) originally considered and even leaves $120 for a nice night out or one killer bottle of wine. :naughty:

Sure for the same price a halo gets you more finger coverage but, much of that area is not diamond; it's metal.
Even if you added up all the diamond surface area of each melee and added it to the area of the center diamond it will not give you the same light show of a round of the same area.
The single round would blow away the halo'd ring.

If light performance is important I'd go with one larger diamond in the least-costly solitaire setting you can find.
Maybe some day move that nicer diamond into a nicer setting.

Well dang! My diamond is already sold. I actually like the way halos look so I'm still going with Niel's setting suggestion but now I need a new diamond.

Phh two weeks will fly buy. And you'll have a flashy bauble ready for thanksgiving!

Congratulations!

How exciting! :)

Congratulations! Very exciting! Looking forward to pics when you get it! :appl:

I love what you chose! It is so much nicer than the rings at the beginning of the thread! :appl:

I've enjoyed your thread and can't wait to see the finished product -- it's going to be beautiful!!

I totally agree with Kenny's post; put the money in the stone and not the setting. A well cut diamond - regardless of its size - will stand on it's own and be beautiful.

Not everybody wants a big rock in a boring, plain setting. If she wants a halo - let her spend her money where she wants. It's her ring and we're talking about maybe the difference between .60 and .70 here, whereas this halo setting takes a .60 to 10.5mm spread. No comparison, sorry.

Thanks everyone :) I'm excited and very pleased with what we created together. I think it's perfect and ended up being $1895 so we came in under budget. You all were wonderful advisors!

Kb1gra knows me, lol. I didn't want what so many others have, a solitaire on a plain band. I also didn't want the typical halo ring which is why the setting Niel picked out was perfect. A good quality, modest sized center stone in a fairly unique halo with great finger coverage for under $1900! That was everything I wanted and feel so grateful to y'all for helping me find it!

So glad you're happy!

I have two james allen rings and have been REALLY happy with both. The free repairs for life with just a $25 shipping charge is awesome.

Raemoore, I am so excited to see the final result! I'm so happy for you, and I think it will look substantial, sparkly and unique! Thanks for sharing your journey with us :)

No that's not well cut.

I think I have one. But to prevent lurkers from snatching it up, are you prepared to buy now?

I'm trying to learn. How can you tell that that one didn't have a good cut?

The table is a bit large, the stone isna bit deep, the crown and pavilion angles aren't usually what I look for.

These are all things you can see on the Gia cert :wavey:
