First off I want to say thanks again for everyone thats helped me directly and for all those that have indirectly helped me with the very informative discussions I''ve been able to read over the last few months!

So I purchased the following loose stone from WF (http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/whiteflash-aca-cut-diamond-2192312.htm) and when I went to Jared''s to look at settings a peculiar thing was happening...the diamond looked yellow once placed on top of the settings (note..it is a G colored diamond)!

The diamond looks icy white when viewed loose, but when we placed it on top of a setting, it had this yellow shade. I asked the guy to put another G colored diamond (from Jared''s) and it did the same thing, looked yellow once it was placed on top of the setting...

His explanation was that because the diamonds on the setting were not cut as well as the center stone, the light reflected from the setting stones was doing some darn thing to the light coming from the center stone. He then pointed me to there "premium" settings that have higher quality diamonds, reasoning that because the quality of cut in those settings were better, the yellow tint wouldn''t be there. After he placed it on top, I saw a difference (good difference), but I still noticed the yellow.

Now I don''t know if I saw the difference because he told me I would see a difference, or maybe settings with stones that have a higher cut (ex: HOF settings) really do make a difference. Or maybe I am just crazy because the stone looks absolutely colorless alone. Please help

Are you sure it wasn''t color from the Jared''s decor? I ask because I had looked at an emerald cut diamond there and while it was an I color, it look like a K or an L when we took it around the store it view in different lighting conditions. I really think it was soaking up the beige color of the Jared''s decor!

Was the setting yellow gold or a white metal (white gold or platinum)? I would take your diamond to a different jeweler and see if the same thing happens.

All the settings we tried it on was white gold. I also looked at one of their "Peerless" diamond in the same setting/lighting and it looked yellow as well. Maybe you''re right, it was probably the ambient colors?

yes it is their lighting and their wall colors I'm sure. Although it makes the stone sparkly in their store, it also puts a terrible tint to any diamond

Possibly. To be honest, Jared''s Peerless/ Heats Desired/ Leo settings are overpriced. I would find a setting you love and have Quest Jewelers, Brian Gavin Diamonds or Whiteflash ake you a setting similar to it. Better diamonds and probably better price. The upside of Jared''s is you can buy the ESP and get the free cleanings, sizings, inspections, etc. And you can trade in your setting (if it has diamonds) if you wanted to, but you have to spend double what your setting price was. However I don''t know any other jeweler who lets people trade in their settings!

Well I had no intention of purchasing their Peerless stone, as my WF looked much better

, I just wanted to eliminate the possibility that it was just my WF stone looking yellow...But thanks I think you guys are right and it was their coloring.

I think Feb and D&T are right, its probably the surroundings in the store making the stones pick up some warmth. How it looks in normal wearing conditions is the main proof of the pudding so to speak and if it pleases you in these lights then you should be good to go.

Another possibility, although remote has to do with the color of the side stones themselves. Grading color face-up is a tricky business at best, and without master stones it is harder still. What may have happened is that when your G color stone was put next to a group of D color side stones the difference in color made your G look yellow. If this is indeed the case than the opposite is also true, i.e. when a higher color center stone is put in a ring with lower color side stones the center stone looks even less colorless than it actually is. Also it is important to remember that these color grades are very, very close together, and without the proper illumination and background it is very difficult to make comparisons. I do agree however that the more likely explanation has to do with the lighting and backgroud of the store in which you viewed the stone.

Good luck.
