Is it possible to get a .96 carat diamond solitaire with a near colorless (G-I), somewhere in the slightly included range, and ideal cut for $4,500 dollars or am I going to have to save up a lot more money? I really don''t want to have to spend more because I would still need to buy a band. Cut is most important to me but it seems like the only one in retail stores in that price range are ideal cut but have an I clarity rating. For example I found a 1 carat, H color, I1 clarity star 129 diamond solitaire for 4,500. I just don''t want a diamond that I can see the inclusion with your eyes. Also I don''t know how I feel about a special facet cut like that. If anyone knows of anything in that price range or can point me in the right direction let me know. Thank you.
 
Thank you for the links. I''ve always been a little leery about ordering diamonds off the internet. But the more I read into this site I found it seems like a lot of people do it.

I was just as leery as you are, maybe more.

After some reading and education from this site, I''m no longer leery of buying on the internet.

In fact, after the experience I''ve had with some jewellery store''s I''m much more leery of most of them.

So buying a diamond from somewhere like James Allen it would come with a lifetime warranty?

Read up on their site to see what their specific policies are. What do you mean by lifetime warranty?
 
I found it on their site. I was just meaning warranty if anything broke on the band due to manufacturing fault and not wear and tear. Does anyone know if they insure their diamonds or would I need to go to my own insurence company? I''m sorry for so many questions, I have just never thought that I would be looking for a diamond e-ring on the internet. I''ve been looking around at local retail jewerly stores and have not been impressed with the quality and the price they are wanting for it. Only other question I was wondering about though is which cut is better...Hearts and arrows or ideal? On the site the H&As say that they are ideal symmetry and polish just like the ideal cuts.
 
You should always purchase your own insurance, it is cheaper and more inclusive. Jewelers mutual and chubb are the most oft used, all you need is an appraisal. Very easy.

All the PS recommended vendors will stand by the quality of their workmanship. Their reputations on PS are a better indication of their customer service than a statement on the website could be, so when you choose a vendor do a search on their name and you can see threads talking about them. James Allen has a very good reputation, perhaps not the best on PS, but definitely very very good. I would buy from them if upgrade policies and lifetime buyback did not matter to me, and if I wanted to save some money on a non-branded diamond.

H&A refers to symmetry of the cut and you pay for that. You can find a wonderfully cut diamond that is not H&A and save some money.

I suggest you take some time to read the diamond tutorial under "knowledge" above, it will really help.

And ask as many questions as you like, thats what PS is for

What are ther crown and pavilion angles?
 
The angles on that diamond are not complimentary, it isn''t the best cut.

This tool is called the HCA, if you enter the crown and pavilion angles and then enter the table and depth %, it will give you a score. Less than 2 means the diamond is worth considering, greater than 2 means reject. Use this to check the angles on the ones you like. If you find one you like, then contact JA and ask them for an Ideal Scope image. Post the image here and the specs and we can tell you if its a go.

Thanks for letting me know about that. So if it''s not a good cut then how do these diamonds get a "ideal" rating? Can it still be cut ideal but be disproportioned?
 
This from JA too? If so, that is due to their simplification in the process of determining if a stone is ideal.

The vendors have various methods of assigning cut grades to their stones but it is no guarantee of any level of cut quality for the most part. It is best to evaluate each diamond on its own desirable visual and physical properties in order to determine which are of the highest cut quality.
 
Also I will call JA today and have them send me a Ideal Scope image and then post it here. Thanks for all the help.

JA has the largest stock of stones with image taken, easiest for me to search with. Other vendors are more of a hit or miss with the search by numbers or more costly if you want to go with the branded stones (but different policy, if you are interested?).

It scored a 1.7 on that TVP scale. So that''s good right? Is there another vendor that you guys think would be a better route for me?

This one might be ok, I can see what might be a small amount of light leakage on the loupe image but an Idealscope image would be best. Post it when you have it then we can go from there.
 
Ugh well they said that diamond was not eye clean. Diamond shopping online is hard.

They didn''t score as high on the TVP scale. If the diamond is an ideal cut but the color rating is J, would you be able to see any tint of yellow?

HCA score is a rejection too, not a selection too. If idealscope image is available, that would trump HCA score.


JVS2 looks promising.
 
Oh ok I understand now. Yeah as soon as they send me the idealscope image I will post it. But is a J alright in color or well it look yellow?
 
It will not look yellow, just off white, not as icy white as a D-F.
 
Ooh, that last J looks gorgeous! No it will not look yellow. You may notice a very slight tint in certain lighting, but it certainly won''t look yellow.
