I have an half eternity ring which is 1 carrot. VS2 and D colour. It is platinum.

We've only had it for a month. But it seems to already have lost all it's sparkle, the diamonds have all gone dull looking!

Is this usual? how shall we combat this?

And btw I have bought the ring from a legitimate retailer. I have a week to return the ring if I want for a refund if this isnt a common problem if you guys feel.

please advice me.

take it to a jeweler for cleaning. then afterward, clean it every day.

You have to keep it clean.

thanks for that, but I have 1 week left for the retailer to let me return it if you think the quality of the diamond is not good. I was thinking 1 month is too soon for the diamond to loose it sparkle?

also what solution is best to use to clean the diamond?

If it's dirty, it will be dull and a lot less sparkly. We can't tell you the quality of your ring without photos. To clean use a water/windex combo and scrub it with a toothbrush.

Diamonds get very dirty but a poor cut doesn't help. Did you get a certificate with the diamond? Can you post it here, or post its number? That's the easiest way to make an estimate of cut quality.

Diamonds don't lose their sparkle unless you have severely damaged them or, more likely, DID NOT PROPERLY AND FREQUENTLY CLEAN THE RING. If it was sparkly to begin with, it will continue to be sparkly as long as you clean it. Would you return your car if it wasn't as shiny as it was when you drove it off the dealership lot? You'd probably just wash it or take it to get detailed. The same principle applies with diamonds.

As for what to clean it with, you can search the forum and easily find a multitude of answers. I use the Connoisseur's Jewelry Cleaner.

Keep it clean and it will sparkle!

Diamonds are attracted to grease, we all have this on our skin. They are so attracted that, at the mine, they
use grease boards to separate diamonds from the gravel/dirt because the diamonds stick to the boards.

The only way that diamond become less sparkly over time is dirt.

No one has asked if you diamond is certified. Is it an ideal cut stones???????

There usually isn't certification on small diamonds for a half eternity band.

Put dishwashing liquid in warm water, and get a soft toothbrush. soak your ring for 10-15 minutes, brush, and then rinse. It should be a lot more sparkly after it dries.

Would that matter? Cut of the diamond is not going to make stones *change* in appearance over time.

Sounds like dirt, but also you're not so happy with the quality now that you've had it for awhile. Return it while you still can. I'm an obsessive jewelry cleaner , but I notice my lower quality bands look pretty bad if they are not always clean. So, you may be dealing with a little of both.

There's no proof the stones are inferior cuts. Where did you buy it? If you bought it at Macy's or Kays; Just return it. Other stores... give us more information.

But in all likelihood the thing is just dirty. Clean it. And keep it clean.

Thanks guys for the wonderful advice.

I wanted an IGA report. However I was told cus there are are so many little diamonds on the band which are smaller than 0.30 carrots , IGA wont certify them. Is there any truth in this?
Anyways they've been certified by a lab called IGL. BTW i am am from Britain, I'm not sure of this forum is American based or British.

The certificate showed where the ring was purchased. A computerized picture of the ring. the carrot, which is 1carrot. The Colour which is D. It also shows the clarity, which is VS2.

However it doesn't have any info on the cut as in if it is good or, average etc, as the sample certificates show on their site. I asked the retailer. they told me this is because it's princess cut and therefore doesnt have this info. That rating only applies to round cut etc.

is there any truth in the above guys???

Do you mean GIA? That's partially true. GIA will certify diamonds as small as 10-15 points (I believe), but the cost isn't justified as it usually costs more than the actual diamond. Afaik, IGL is not a great lab. Princess cuts are only graded by AGS. Do you have a copy of the cert and/or pics of the ring?

P.S. A diamond's weight is measured in carats. Gold is in karats. Carrot is a vegetable. ;) and the forum has members from all over the world.

Edit: it almost sounds like you have an appraisal rather than a verification.

Yes I will take a pic of the cert and ring when i get home.

So can you get a badly cut princess cut?

and yes I did mean GIA :)

Princess cuts and cushions and all other cuts are graded by GIA. Only thing GIA doesn't grade is clarity enhanced. But GIA only grades rounds for CUT. No fancies. AGS is the only lab that grades fancies for CUT.

Well IGL was only offered to me, I think it was due to keep the costs low it seems now!

as requested here is the certificate:

Diamonds do not "lose" their sparkle, and they don't "go" dull. They just get dirty. So if it used to be sparkly and is now dull, you have to clean it.

Have you tried to clean it with some hot water and dish detergent or ammonia, and scrub the top and bottom with a toothbrush?

Cut can affect sparkle. The ideal cut diamonds are less affected by dirt. A poorly cut diamond may be adversely affected by just a little dirt.

The bottom of the diamonds is probably very dirty. Get a small toothbrush and scrub the heck out of it. I don't think the cut looks bad.

You are correct, of course. I should have worded that differently.

I haven't heard that IGL is disreputable, I think it may be a popular grading lab in Australia.
I have never used them, but just because the name is not familiar doesn't automatically mean they are a poor or disreputable lab.
I'd be interested in learning more about IGL myself.

PS if your ring has lost its sparkle, just clean it, you'll be stunned. To keep your diamonds performing beautifully, they really need to be cleaned as often as you do. :)
