I posted a little bit ago that I wanted to find 5 OECs for a 5-stone. Since then, talking to other PSers, I have decided that MRBs are the way to go. So I will be, little by little, buying five .5ct or greater J-M VS2/SI1 MRBs. I have been in contact with Jamie at BGD but she doesn't have anything in my criteria right now. She says I may have to wait until the end of January for Brian to go to the factory to check out the stock. So, I decided while I am waiting, to broaden my horizons.

I found this stone. Is it worth taking a look?

I decided to raise my budget from $800 to $1300. But $1300 is my absolute cutoff.

How do these look?

The .54 has an HCA of 1.6 and the .58 has an HCA of 1.6. Will that make a huge impact?

NOT an expert, but #2 appeals to me. #1 seems a bit 'off' on the H&A and the culet seems off centre --- to me, anyway.

That sounds like its going to be awesome! And nice budget bump :appl: If it were me, I'd personally wait for Brian to pick you new stones in January - if there is no rush, I'd defer to the master himself to hand select a matching set for you... You're worth it, right??

Oops, I meant the .58 has an HCA of 1.4

between these two i like #1 b/c of the higher crown and smaller table.

Well, Jamie just emailed me and told me that in January I may need to increase my budget by about 200 dollars... So I really wanna get a head start

Are the diamonds from BGD? If so, do you think you can "upgrade" to a different diamond if you decide not to keep one of these? If yes to al questions, then buy either or both now.

Is that $200/stone? These look like JA diamonds. Do they have the same upgrade policy? Or I guess may not be necessary if setting in a 5 stone w BGD.

I still prefer #2 but as fancydiamonds says .. Get both!! :Up_to_something:

They are actually not BGD diamonds. I was working with them but the largest they have in my price range is .43 and I wanna go bigger than 50 pointers. And the next time they will have new diamonds in is in January and I was told that diamond prices will be going up.

Yes! She said there is a possibility that if my budget is 900-1000, in January it might need to be increased to 1100-1200.

And I'm not necessarily worried about upgrading. That's why I just wanna get bigger now and went from 30 pointers to over 50 pointers.
But I do want to either set it in a BGD trellis or a WF trellis.

Do you have any recommendations?

uh oh... that is NOT good news, that diamond prices are increasing AGAIN... rats!

I do not have anything from WF, but they do make a beautiful looking trellis, that's for sure! I think Katiedid just had her 5 stone made by WF and it is STUNNING!! I'm a huge trellis fan (throw in a claw prong and you'll get a front row seat to watching Enerchi do cartwheels!!), but my 3 stone was designed specifically for my princess stones, by Brian himself, and I ADORE that ring! The fluid bars are just perfect, IMO and it is very airy and open.

For what you are building - and might I add that I am completely and TOTALLY jealous of the new 'bling-to-be' ring and want to be numero uno on the preloved thread if you ever sell it (or your will - you pick! :Up_to_something: :wink2: ) - but this will be an heirloom piece that will give "our" extra lovely finger size (see, already I'm claiming a portion of it!!), some incredible coverage and the bling factor is going to be TDF at 2.5 ish carats!!! So... knowing it is a big investment in the time to hunt the stones down, and the money to purchase, you have to go with who you feel the most comfortable. Seems as tho both companies have amazing reps here on PS and there are a ton of PSers who are thrilled with both camps!! I'm a BGD fan - but I have not bought anything from WF....

Take your time, buy the stones, talk to who you'd consider building this creation for you ... then decide. Don't rush something as gorgeous as this is going to be... enjoy the 'foreplay', so to speak!!! :Up_to_something:

Both stones look great, good numbers, images, and HCA scores. Nothing to worry about!!

Buy these two diamonds from JA, and in January/February get the remaining three from either BGD or WF from whom you will be getting the Trellis setting. You may consider getting something close to graduated, that is, 0.45 to 0.50 ct for the remaining three stones. This way, you will have more choices that meet your budget. At least for now, you have the largest diamonds for "affordable" price. In case you find yourself buying all five new diamonds for your 5-stone ring, you can either use these JA diamonds for studs or sell them here. 0.5ct (for 1.0 ctw studs) is popular size.

She can't buy these two if she plans to have all the stones the same size! These are different sizes...5.2mm and 5.4mm. This would only work if she is doing a graduated stone ring. And that has to be decided beforehand.

I really, really advise you to stay close to .50- .52 cts and 5.1-5.2mm. There are going to be a lot of stones cut at the low .5 weight. Those will be easy to match. But if you go up to .58 and 5.4mm, you may have more difficulty matching them. Not to mention, I think it won't work as well because the diamonds are going to be wider than your finger!

This project would cost a lot less and still have a huge size appearance if you stuck to stones in the .45 range, but I guess you know that!

Okie dokie... so these three diamonds are on hold so I can now post them...

.54 J SI1

.54 J VS2

.58 J SI1
http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/J-SI1-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1541978.asp

OR, he recommended this .56 K http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/K-VS2-Ideal-Cut-Round-Diamond-1479325.asp
Which I didn't put on hold. He said this one had the best Idealscope but when I ran it through the HCA, it wasn't as great as the other's. But he still recommends this one.

So what do you all think?

The .58 I am keeping purely because of the size. The idealscope has some leakage, but is that a sacrifice I should make for that .2mm difference?

So are you saying that you are doing a graduated 5 stone ring or all the same size???

I'm sorry, let me clarify. I will be doing all diamonds the same size. I am buying my first one now which will be the model for all the other stones in the future. I will then be putting two smaller diamonds on either side to make into a 7-stone per Enerchi's advice.

I think these are WAY too big to add #6 and #7. Did you say trellis? Can you show us a picture of the setting you are talking about?

I was actually looking at the .43ct on the BGD website but then thought I have almost size 10 fingers and I want coverage. This is the look I am going for. http://jewelsbyericagrace.smugmug.c...Ff/1959939617_d8Zxm3v#!i=1959939617&k=d8Zxm3v

Five stones at 5.4mm each is 27 mm total if the stones are touching. You can measure and see if 27mm will work across the top of your finger. But I surely do not see 2 extra stones fitting!

I would honestly take the other two and aim at 5.2mm.

Ok, I'm going for the 5.2mm. Which do you prefer?

I love the .54 J VS2! I think it has nice measurements and it will be much easier to match up 5 stones at 5.2mm!

Either one is fine, though. Both .54's would be a good match if you were buying 2.

Your ring sounds like its going to be gorgeous! Could you (or someone) please point me towards the thread where you were talked out of OEC's please? A five stone with OEC's or AVR's is on my wish list.

You can buy the 3 reserved diamonds now together with two more 0.50-0.52ct diamonds in the future to make a 5-stone ring. I think the coverage will be great and the combination will fit your finger (larger than 6.25). Although the size of these diamonds varies a bit, I do not think you can tell readily.

My 5-stone Trellis is for my size 6.25 finger. It has the following size diamonds: 0.51ct, 0.512ct, 0.541ct, 0.513ct, and 0.504ct. The diameters of the diamonds are approximately 5.13, 5.15, 5.25, 5.16, and 5.15. They do not look graduated to me. In fact, I cannot tell which stones are which, except the middle location which I specified to be for the largest 0.541ct. If I look very hard, maybe I can see the middle stone is a tiny bit larger than the rest.

Yours are closer to the same size, FD. She was looking at one that was 5.4 mm and two that were 5.2mm. That is too much difference if she wants them to all appear the same size, in my opinion.

She said she only wants to buy one now. The two 5.2mm stones are a perfect match, though.

I will say after looking back at yours, that I am not so worried about the size of the stones on her. And your rings are helpful to me because I wear almost the same sizes as you on my right and left ring fingers!

I agree with you that the best thing to do now is to buy the two 5.2mm diamonds. In the future if she finds two additional diamonds around 5.2mm, she can still have a larger diamond (e.g., 5.4mm) in the middle. The 0.2mm difference is not readily noticeable in real life.

Interesting that we have similar size fingers. Don't you wish that our left and right finges are the same size, so we can save some money by having only one 5-stone ring?

It was going to be harder for me to find similar OECs at different times. If I had the funds, it would have been easier since I would be able to buy all the OECs together. But with MRBs, it's easier to collect one by one :)

After seeing your trelllis, it looks gorgeous on you! But now I wonder now... You have a size 6.25 and that ctw looks amazing on you. Wonderful coverage. I wonder if I will get that kind of coverage with my 9.5 finger...

I also had a thought... if I mixed the diamonds from JA with BGD signature... do you think there will be a difference to the naked eye with performance if they are all AGS000?

Oh Enerchi, you know that if I was ever to sell my ring, you would be the first to know. And I will give it to you for a steal! It's funny tho! I haven't even gotten the ring yet and you're already trying to get your hands on it! And trying to weasel your way into my will! Don't worry tho, I went to my lawyer's today and I already added you into my will. He was a little confused when I said I have no other information other than she's on PS and her name is Enerchi. Ha!
