hello,

I wanted to ask if i got a good deal on a diamond i understand without a picture it is hard for you to say i guess im asking in general ( i dont have pictures as its not at my house as dont want my girlfriend to find it ). I got it from a local reputable jeweler that they got from an estate sale. It was 750 for the diamond she said it was .45 was g/h vs2/si1 round cut ( she did not get exact clarity and color i guess as she didnt want to be wrong and screw me over ) however i totally forgot to ask about cut and feeling really stupid for not asking. She said it was a good value and i do trust the store. I already have the ring set and i paid 1197 for the diamond and 14k band. It has no certificate because i did not have the budget my girlfriend is not even expecting this much i am the one who is more worried about the 4cs she truly would have been fine with a fake diamond because of our budget but i didnt want that. I think it looks beautiful and so do my parents however were not diamond experts. I dont want it to look really bad in the light or for her to notice imperfections because its a bad cut. i have looked and looked at it and it looks fine to me. thanks for the help

Probably not really a deal since you don't know exactly what you have. I plugged in .45-.49 ct., vs2/si1 into the diamond search tool here and $750 is the price of an EGL-graded diamond with those specs. EGL isn't especially well-thought-of here. Prices start at a little over $1000 for a diamond with those specs that's GIA graded.

Doesn't seem like a ripoff, but not a bargain, either. You probably paid a fair price for what you got.

You're not really going to be able to tell much about the cut with it mounted, and it's probably not worth the money to have it unmounted and graded, etc. If you're happy with it and your fiancée is happy with it, that's all that matters!

All I can say to this is a good deal is the diamond that makes you both happy for a price you can afford.

I don't think you overpaid, but I don't think you got a bargain either.
If you can't return it and it looks good to you, then be happy that you found something nice for your gf within your budget and stay off forums like this. The time to learn about diamond cut, color, clarity and grading is before you buy something, not after. Sorry, don't mean to be rude, but I'd really hate to see you start second-guessing your purchase -- this should be a happy time in your life! Without photos and more information about the diamond's proportions, actual color, and clarity, we can't tell you anything more than it sounds like the price you paid was not out of line for an EGL graded stone.

Hi,

You would have to have it unmounted to have it properly graded, but you actually can tell a bit about the cut (as in if it's good or not) by looking at it under an ideal scope. That will show you the light return of the diamond and you can see that even if it's mounted. Some jewelry stores have similar-type equipment that you can look at the ring under. Years ago, before I got my ideal scope, I found a jewelry store that carried Hearts on Fire diamonds and they let me look at my diamond under their scope so I could compare it to the HOF stones.

We cannot say if you got a good deal because there is no way to confirm if the clarity/color is what the jeweler said, but since it "pre-loved" stone that they bought from an estate sale, technically, you should have received a discount being it wasn't a "new" stone.

ok thank you for you help. I feel so stupid not asking about the cut as i thought i had done a decent amount of reading on the subject. Your right though as long as she is happy with it that is all that matters as i know i am the one who would be worrying about the cut and she would not. I also will stop looking at diamond sites as your right all it does as make me feel like im giving her a bad stone. Thanks for all your advice everyone

Yep, and I agree with Lula...it's best if you just enjoy your purchase and not obsess over the stone and/or worry about it at this point!

It's unlikely that the salesperson would have been able to give you anything beyond their opinion of the diamonds cut anyway, similar to what they told you about it color and clarity, so don't beat yourself up for not asking. It sounds as though you thought it was beautiful and I'm sure that your gf will as well. Congrats on your upcoming engagement! :))
