Well, I''m gonna echo what some of the others have said and add my two cents...
OK, you found the ring. I wouldn''t have gone repeatedly trying it on. If it were me, I would have shut the door and did a (hands over eyes), "La la la la."
A lot of this depends on how you feel about being surprised. For me, I''d want to be surprised. I told my BF that if he proposes, I don''t want to know a thing. Surprise me with a ring (and he knows what I like - I don''t want to be involved in any shopping for it) and do not let me suspect a proposal is coming. I would be devistated if I stumbled upon something, because it''s so important for me to be surprised and have any proposal aspects be "his thing." Having said that...
I don''t snoop at all. Ever. For any reason. My BF and I don''t live together yet (working out details to move in, though - we have kids and it''s complicated). But I am at his house 5+ days a week. My apartment at this point functions basically as an expensive storage unit (hee hee). The only time I go into his dresser is to either borrow a t-shirt or socks (he has awesome wool socks that his late mom hand-knitted!) or put laundry away. He''s gone in my purse ONLY to get my keys or something like that - and usually the reason is because he has to move my car when I am sleeping or in the shower, or I just came back from the salon and my nails are still wet and I need help with everything for a good hour. We don''t know each other''s e-mail passwords. We don''t go into each other''s cell phones. We don''t open each other''s mail. We know the basics about each other - name, rank and serial # - but, for example, if I go to my GYN for a check-up, he doesn''t need or want to know that I also have a female issue that needs attending to (I know some girls whose BFs hear about all their monthly issues, yeast invasions, etc....and I think that''s just wrong) -- unless that issue also impacts him personally.
Some girls might think I''m nuts, but my thought is that people are entitled to privacy and personal space. On one hand, it''s good to share stuff with your partner. And some people think they have to know EVERYTHING about their partner...lest that person hide something from them. But, if you trust the other person and have no concrete reason to pry (ie - someone keeps calling the house and hanging up when you answer), then DON''T DO IT!
No, I don''t think you did something "wrong" by finding the ring (he did hide it in a wonky spot - c''mon! the sock drawer?!!). But stop looking, Girl!

Thank you everyone for such wonderful advice. My bf, or shall I say, fiance, proposed on Saturday! I haven''t looked at the ring after posting on this board and I had no idea he was going to propose on Saturday so I was pleasantly surprised... I think I would be happier if I had never come upon the ring, but I guess that''s something I have to live with

But I wouldn''t feel too badly.
I would act surprised (after all, the proposal will be a surprise) and then ''fess up later when you are in the glow. I am sure he will think it''s adorable in your own unique way.
