Did my FI overpay? EGL graded diamond

I wouldn't buy it. It looks pretty dirty (so you'd definitely have to make sure it's eye clean although they dont have pictures of their stones so you'd have to buy it and then return it if you dont like it) but it also only got a 3.1 on the HCA. You'll want to keep that score under a 2.

I'd suggest these:

I would only buy from vendors who can provide me at the very least, a photograph of the actual stone. Better yet, with an idealscope picture. I'm sorry to say that the BN diamond is not well cut.

Yes, unfortunately that stone isn't even EGL graded, so I am sure it is I1 or lower and no telling what color. It might be worth $5000. Why did you wait until after the return period to say anything? I really would not want to deal with someone who cheated me. I suppose you might have some leverage if you have another appraisal saying it is lower than represented, so make SURE they understand that you are not happy with the diamond and want the appraisal to try to get the jeweler to take it back IF it is not represented. You definitely do not want the typical feel good inflated appraisal!!! Are you in or near a big city? It would be good if you could use a trusted independed appraiser.

When was the ring purchased and when was the return period up? Do you know for sure that there even was a return period?

Please do not attempt to look at stones yet. If you are able to return it, we can list excellent cut stones for you that will be worth buying, I promise. Blue Nile is not the best place to look because there are no pictures of the stones and they don't do idealscope images.

DS is right. First figure out what can be done with the E-ring that you have. No point looking at on line vendors until you absolutely, unequivocally understand the condition of sale, including the return period. The ones so far can be a basis for the conversation with your jeweller.

I do hope that you can come to some sort of resolution in a timely manner.

So sorry to hear about your experience. If you can only do an exchange, don't be afraid to take the time to get exactly what you want. It may take a bit, but it will be worth it. I know my SA got a little frustrated with my requests, but in the end, she was VERY proud of the super diamond she had brought in for me, and how happy I was. You will get much better results if you are educated and clear with what you will accept. Good luck with your search.

Did you purchase the ring with a credit card? If the stone has been misrepresented and the vendor won't work with you then it's possible you may find some resolution with the credit card company. But FIRST you need a good independent appraisal....meaning someone that doesn't sell jewelry and has no interest in your stone or where you purchased it. It's also important to explain to the appraiser what it is that you are hoping to achieve from the appraisal, for instance some people are looking for replacement cost for insurance purposes, some are hoping to sell the stone on the secondary market and looking for information that will allow them to set a price, and in your case, you want to know that the stone has been fairly and accurately described.

I agree with the others that it's important to first find out what can be done with your stone before looking for others. If it ends up that the vendor will not work with you on a return or exchange, there may still be other options, so be sure to keep us posted on your progress.
