Hey guys,

newbie here. I have a bit of a dilemma that I’m hoping you guys could provide advice on.

I have placed a deposit on a Canadian diamond which is absolutely beautiful to propose to my girlfriend in the coming months. It is a 1.54ct IF, ex ex ex no fluroescence. Valued at approx $28,000 through brilliant earth.

After more investigation and learning I have been told that the origin of the diamond is only on the insurance paperwork and not on the GIA certificate and it also has no Canada diamond watermark.

should I be concerned? Does it matter? Would you pick a new diamond based on this? I absolutely love it. But this is bothering me.754DA016-358B-4818-B25A-CA6715EBAD60.jpeg
 
Is it a D IF? I don't think the value of the stone is dependent on the location of the mine, so that only matters if it's important to you. It would not be a factor for me at all as I have no idea where any of my diamonds were mined. Are you certain she values a smaller D IF over a larger superideal cut F VS1, for example?

Sorry it’s an F colour. The 1.54 is a nice size for her hand. The clarity is more for me as I appreciate fine things haha
 
On this board, "fine things" = the best cut possible.

Did you run your new diamond through the HCA? How about IdealScope images, etc?

"ex ex ex" is a very broad range which unfortunately encompasses some diamonds that don't have the best light return.

We'd need more info to accurately judge the cut quality.

Whoa, that price is way too high! If you are going with F color, there is zero reason to go with IF clarity as VS1 and up is totally clean. You can get better, top quality cut for far less money. Here are some examples. BE is kind of known to have high prices, but they also do not have top cut quality stones.

Here's my personal choice for close to that price which is 1.7 F VS1:

Whew, okay! That does make a difference. So that stone is about $22k USD.

I will still stand by the stones I posted being better cut for a similar or lower price. I deleted the one that was highest priced. I was going to run your stone through the HCA but the report disappeared. I do think it will have some issues with a 36 crown angle and 40.6 pavilion angle. That's not a stone we'd recommend buying without an ASET image to show if it has leakage.

Also, does BE have a trade-up policy?

I know, I know, many people claim they won't ever want to trade up, but down the road, that often changes.

If it were my $, I'd totally get a super ideal cut diamond instead (like the ones DiamondSeeker listed.)

I wouldnt buy this if I were you. IF clarity doesn't matter for how the stone will look IRL compared to a VS2 or higher clarity, whereas cut will directly impact how the stone looks. Also, BE is known for having horrific customer service and high prices. If you want the best diamond, go with one of the super ideal stones listed above.
 
I saw the table 59, crown angle 36, pavilion angle 40.6, and what is the depth?

62.2 saw it, just a sec

Okay, it gets a 2.2, very good for cut (the ones above get excellent)

Light Return:Very Good
Fire:Excellent
Scintillation:Very Good
Spread:Very Good
HCA Score :2.2 - Very Good - Worth buying if the price is right

There's no way I'd pay $22k for this stone when I could get one that was excellent overall and excellent in light return, fire, and scintillation like the ones above.

Thanks, see my comments above your post. I was able to click and see the depth and run the stone through the HCA, too. This is not a stone I'd consider, personally, since there are better cut ones available at a better price.

Thank you for your advice. I’m definitely considering other options now. My only concern is I don’t know it BE are going to refund my deposit. Do they have any similar to the above in case I can’t get refund? Or am I screwed

Is there anything on their website about not refunding a deposit? And how much was the deposit? Unfortunately pretty much everything on BE is overpriced for the quality and you can find better elsewhere, so I would push to get back the deposit. I know someone else who was in a similar situation (e.g. put down a deposit before realizing the quality of BE was subpar), and they tried to tell him he couldn't get it refunded, etc. He escalated it and they eventually agreed to refund him but only after multiple yelp reviews, etc. And he was told by BE that they would only refund him if he removed the Yelp review (which is shady AF....)

I’ll have to inquire and do some more investigation. I will definitely push for a refund. Although if it comes down to it I don’t mind paying a slightly higher amount to get a nicer diamond from them. I just have no idea where to start

We can help you. But I honestly wouldnt buy from them unless you have to because you can get better elsewhere.

My wife has a Canadian diamond. It has the Canadamark number inscribed on the girdle instead of the GIA number. The GIA cert says the CMMD number is present on the girdle.

The Canadamark website has a section where you can enter your Canadamark number and verify the diamond's authenticity. If the diamond is not CM inscribed there is no way anybody can prove it's a non-conflict Canadian diamond. You might be able to use this as another reason to get your refund.

Is the video of the stone you purchased? I can't really tell anything from the video because it isn't very long. But as above, I wouldn't buy this stone.

Wow!! For that price, I would rather get the 1.508 F VS1 that DS2006 listed or this one:


Bigger diamond, same color, for less, I won’t pay for something I cannot see (IF). I’d rather pay for something my eyes can see (sparks, size and color).

Is it from brilliant earth? Don’t they have full refund policy within 30days?

That HPD/CBI is gorgeous!

Wink is also getting in more stones from Antwerp. I’m getting a CBI for a pendant and it just came in. HPD is making the pendant and chain in platinum. So their inventory is replenishing after the holidays!
