Does anyone have experiences where their gold/platinum rings set off the metal detectors at the airport? My GF and I are going to Chicago next week, and I''m sneaking along the E-ring to propose to her when we get there. I don''t want it to be detected at the airport or she''ll become suspicious. Thanks in advance, people.

Maybe you can call airport security ahead and explain.
Perhaps they can get it through security discreetly.

Mine never has(knock on wood)....I wear both my rings and usually earrings and my necklace doesn''t set it off either. Nor my toe rings, thank goodness, cuz those suckers aren''t comin'' off!!

Mara, do you wear diamonds on you toes?

Do tell.

Pics?

A ring shouldn''t set off the alarms. I''ve gone through a ton of flights with my wedding set, necklace and earrings and these haven''t triggered any detector as of yet.

Mine have never set any alarms off either.

kenny, I surely do!

Oh Mara, you are just tooo much.

Kudos to the Diamond Queen!

Mine is pretty heavy plt and it never goes off. I would keep the ring in your pocket or sock (don''t forget they make you take your shoes off so you could easily sneak it in or out while you do that) or somewhere on you b/c they do random checks in your bag. Good luck.

Make expressly sure that if you get searched that you tell them so they don't blow the surprise. And if you do, I hope you get someone who isn't a jerk. A coworker who got engaged recently had that happen. He had to propose in the damn airport because he tried to be secretive and the woman kept yelling WHAT? YOU HAVE A RING N YOUR SUITCASE? His woman heard everything and he just proposed. Then screamed at the woman who ruined his 3 month long plan. And then got arrested.

That is too funny ame. That''s why I think he should carry it on his body through security.

And I definitely agree. Maybe put it in a soft litthe pouch in your sock and go to the bathroom right after to put it back in the ring box and back into your carryon.

GOOD LUCK!

The good thing seems to be that nowadays, if you''re not being screened, you have to well clear the area to wait for whomever is being wanded. If you do beep, most likely your girlfriend will be too far to really get a good look at anything!

I''ve always got on wg/diamond earrings, wg/diamond pendant, platinum wedding rings on the hand and gold toe rings on my feet. None of those have ever set off a metal detector at the airport. Coins in your pocket though...another story. Get rid of those and put the ringbox in your pocket!!!

Interesting delema:

First, depending on how the local authorities set their metall detector - it can go off.

I find the settings that the Airport Security uses to be rediculus. A basic belt buckle sets it off - even on a dress belt - thus you have to remove your belt. Yet, at work I transverse through a metall detector with a much larger belt buckle several times a day without setting that one off (I work in a nuclear facility: My office is "inside the fence" the main office is "outside the fence" and I walk back and forth often many times a day).

A firearm has a good chunk of metal, why are they setting their detectors for things much smaller than that (and I have watched security testing our metal detectors at work with their "test gun" - which is just a chunk of steel machines to look like a very small gun - one that is actually smaller than any gun I''ve ever seen (even the smallest 1 shot 22 pistol - the pocket guns that are so easy to hide - are larger).

So why are the airport detectors set to detect a much smaller chunk of metal. No clue. Could they be set to alarm on rings. Sure.

What is more interesting is that we also have explosive detector booths that we have to go through evertime we enter the "protected area." I''ve been really currious why those havn''t shown up in airports. They are required at nuclear facilities.

I''ve yet to figure what they are looking for as far as taking the shoes off: This is really stupid.

Bottom line: I can see how the Nuclear facility security would find a bomb or a firearm in anything that was headed inside the fence (into the "protected area"). There is no comparison to airport security - none whatsoever. Airport security is in general a bunch of amatures in comparision.; whom I think are trying to give the appearance of "security" by a bunch of "busy work" items. They antagonize the heck our of us with by requiring us to take our shoes and belts off - and detailed "pat down" searches, and to x-ray our coats (we don''t xray our coats at the nuclear facility (and yes we do x-ray all hand carried items as we pass through the metal detector). Yet I''m very convinced that I could walk a major bomb right through them (I am a licensed blaster and know explosives). As far as not allowing a small pocket knife, sizors, and other things... Please... What they do allow is enough to quickly kill people and terrorize a planload of people If a person wants to do so and knows how.

Back to your ring: I doubt that you will be able to talk in advance with the airport security and arrange "special" treatment. Some would be willing, but you dont'' know who you will get when you get there, or how frustrated they will be.

They are likely to detect that you have a "pouch" in your sock, either by the bulge or by your "funny" walk. They will then find it in full view.

I would do either of 2 things:

1) Put it into a normal carry-on item (briefcase, knapsack, luggage, etc) in an out of sight pocket or area.

2) ship it to your hotel so that it is there when you arrive.

Perry, those are very good points. The two options you suggested are exactly what I am considering. The person we''re staying with suggested that I ship her the ring to avoid detection. The other option is to put it in my carry-on, so that when it goes throught the X-ray, they''ll see that it''s just a ring. I like the latter option, but I have another question for advice. Should I put it in the orignal jewelry box (this is kind of bulky) so that they can see that it''s just a ring...or i was thinking of putting it in a contact case (it fits perfectly) so that once we''re on the plain, I can sneak it out of my carry-on and put it into my pocket and i know it''ll be safe with me. The problem with the contact case is that I''m afraid the X-ray person might think it''s suspicious to have a ring in a weird round container and might make an issue out of it. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks a lot everyone for all of your advise!!!!!!!!!

I vote for shipping it to your friend. My advice--make sure it''s insured like all get out and send it Overnight, Priority Mail or Priority Registered Insured. If you don''t have it sent to a FedEx holding station, it''s likely to walk off because ofthe declared insured value.

That is the safest bet to avoid detection.

I recently got back from Europe and went through PLENTY of metal detectors along the way...never took off my rings, earrings and even watches (which aren''t even gold!)...I was never beeped and never was body searched for setting them off....

My jewelry has never set them off, but I wore a nice belt with a big buckle and that made them go off like gang busters. Will never wear that again while traveling.

I second Perry. Calling ahead will only make them suspicious. Also, many airports require you to take off your shoes and put them through x-ray, and a metallic ring in a shoe will almost certainly attract the attention of the security person monitoring the x-ray screen. On the other hand, my wife often travels with her jewely in her carry on in ring boxes and soft cases, and she has never been questioned. I can''t imagine that they don''t see such things regularly. Still, shipping may be safer, at least from an inconvenient discovery.
