Do Jewelry Stores keep GIA Records of your purchase?

Hi,

I'm looking at buying a ring from a private party. I'm requesting paperwork which I won't even consider buying the ring without paperwork and confirmation from a 3rd party of my choosing confirming the paper work is for the ring in question. This is becoming pretty sketchy but wanted to confirm with people who know more on this than I do. The seller claims they bought the ring a month ago, husband was in a accident and needs the money. Paid $7K for it but lost the paperwork in a move and are willing to take $2,300. They claim to have bought the ring from a jewelry store locally but that store won't give them a copy of the paper work and is requesting they spend $300 for an appraisal which they won't do. They are willing to meet me at any store of my choosing to prove the diamonds are real. $300 seems like way too much for an appraisal. I'm going to call the store and get an appraisal quote. At this point I'm pretty turned off on this deal.

I have no doubt the diamonds are real but I want to know the Cut, Clarity, Color and size. I won't buy without knowing these.

Looking for a good deal on a ring is a pain in the butt. The more I type the more I can see this as being a scam.

Any feedback is appreciated!
Thanks and Merry Christmas

I say, "bah, humbug!" to the claim that the jewelry store is refusing to give them a copy of the paperwork pertaining to the purchase of a ring sold within the past month (in my experience, the GIA report number is written on the sales receipt -- which is simply common sense, protects both the store & the purchaser from later claims of fraud/misrepresentation).

I agree, I would think if you spent $7,000 on a ring and asked for the GIA a months later they would be happy to give it to you.

I've asked for a bank statement or credit card statement showing they transaction. I bet they can't provide that either.

In my experience they at least keep a record of the GIA report number and then a copy of the report can be pulled. I would be very surprised if a store would not provide the report number to a customer who had purchased a ring from them. I would not purchase this ring. Something sounds way off to me.

HI Berts,
There are so many red flags here- please be careful.
The seller did not even mention GIA- and no other paperwork is sufficient in this case.

If I might ask- how did you find the private seller?

This is a craigslist add. I do believe them that they are real diamonds. No clue what the quality of the diamond is which is the problem. I've thought about getting a independent appraisal but that still won't be enough to make me feel warm and fuzzy so why bother. I'll keep pestering them for documentation and see where it goes.

They do keep insisting that we meet at jewelry store of my choosing to have the ring evaluated.

I agree, lots of red flags.

Run.

yes mly mother bought her riing 30 years ago and the GIA was on the card in his roledex with her purchase. My personal eting was not certified

Agreed. There's so much BS in their story you need a bobcat. Lost the paperwork within a month and the store can't do anything for her on records? Sorry. Not buying it. Move on.

Sniff, sniff, what's that STENCH????

Could these be stolen?

At the very least they should go into the vending store and verify that these are the people who bought the ring. I am a vendor who has seen such things before and I urge you to exercise extreme caution. Something is not adding up from what you are telling us. I have no idea what it might be, but it makes me incredibly uncomfortable. It is easy for me to understand the store not having a copy of the cert, but to not be able to tell you a cert number so you can check it just seems like... oops, there's that STENCH again.

Wink

Run away.

Any store ought to be able to provide a client with a copy of the receipt from a month ago. Mind you, I can understand why they wouldn't give this data to YOU, you weren't the client, but if you're seller won't cooperate with such a simple request it's because they're hiding something.

I'm running for sure. The seller has requested the information from the jewelry store and they say the store won't cooperate.

They were pretty responsive until this morning when I asked for a bank statement or credit card statement proving they paid $7,000. Maybe I'll ask if they are willing to go into the store and have them prove they are the original owners and the price.

I'm just going to play with them now.

Is the lab report lasered on the girdle somewhere?

Don't play with them.

Just walk away.

No sense in leading them on if they are for real, or poking the crazy if they aren't for real.
