a diamond look bigger or smaller. I''ve read that some people think it makes it look smaller while others say it enhances the roundness therefore making it look larger. What do you guys think?

Definitely makes the diamond look rounder, as to bigger....you will find many varying opinions on that one!

I say the 6 prongs complement the round and the 4 prongs gives it a square look. I want a round to look like a round.

this week i switched from a six prong to a 4 prong. i destroy settings from daily wear and sewing.

in total frustration, (my last setting wore out the 14k head in three months) i changed to a 4 prong platinum head. will keep you updated.

i think it makes the stone more visible. but one good smash against a grocery cart will let you know.

although I like certain four prong settings I am partial to 6 prong settings. I agree that it makes the stone look rounder in most cases because there are certain 4 prong settings where at first glance I accidentally mistook it for a princess cut. However, I''m not sure if I''d say the stone actually looks bigger in a 6 prong. Maybe I haven''t looked at stones in settings long enough (I''ve only started to notice other peoples'' rings in recent months due to my own search) but perhaps there is a wee bit of difference?

I honestly think that your preference may vary by different settings. Out of all the ones I''ve looked at-- there were a few 4 prongs that made me wish i liked 4 prong settings bc I feel like the stones showed more so I''m a little worried about all that metal covering my precious stone.

Hi Fashionsweetie ~

I personally think the answer is Yes & No.

I love both 4 & 6 prongs. I am very picky about prongs. What I have discovered over the years is that not all 4 or 6 prong heads are equal. Last year I finally figured out ''so to speak'' why I like some 4 or 6 prong heads, and why I don''t like others.

This is what I realized. Some have what I call bulky and big (think chunky) prongs, I think these types hide more of the diamond, and might give off the appearance at a quick glance that the diamond is smaller than it really is. Then, there are prongs that are small & miniscule (Think "Leon Mege & his kitty-cat claw prongs") I think these types of prongs shows a little more of the diamond, and thus at a quick glance, makes the diamond appear larger than it really is.

It was said earlier that some 4 prongs depending on how they are set (maybe 2,4,6,8), can give at a quick glance the appearance that a diamond might look square ... I wonder if there are any pictures of a 1 ct RB and a 1 ct Princess side by side. I think sometimes a spacial shape might give the appearance or "more bang for the buck" for the size vs shape then another spacial shape ... something to think about.

One thing I acknowledge is that if someone is hard on their rings, going with more metal in the prongs might be a good choice. I think more metal would stand up to more wear and tear and hold that sparklie diamond in there better, but of course if I chose something with less metal to hold the diamond in ... I would have to beaware on a daily basis of check my prongs ... because I know from first hand experience what an accidental "whack" on the counter has done on a skinny prong. "Whoops!"

Have a great day!

for me i think that 6 prongs can overwhelm a smaller stone...but with larger stones it seems to enhance the size more.

so for me i would 4 prong anything up to like 1.5c or 2c. but 6 prong anything above 2c. also for added safety i like the 6 prongs on the larger stones.

i loved 4 prongs as my prongs were TINY so the diamond looked super round and big but once i went over 2c i was worried at all the exposed girdle that was going to be going on, and i'm clumsy, so i went 6 prongs and also i like the profile more of the head and the added bonus is the 6 prongs definitely make the already big diamond look bigger.

but i've seen 6 prongs on smaller stones and they seem to encompass the diamond and call attention to it being smaller. oh and regardless of 4 or 6 prongs, i only want to see tiny prongs, i can't stand big bulky prongs, who wants to see metal when they could see DIAMOND!
