Do you feel your kitchen appliances must be the same brand name?

The previous owners of my home left the appliances which were all the same brand. My intent is to replace them with stainless as they are currently an off-white (almond maybe?) color. For the life of me I do not like every piece of a "set" of appliances of the same brand. I would think, especially considering resale value one day (I would probably leave appliances) that new owners would prefer a matching set.

I was curious to know if anyone has settled for a large appliance they really didn''t like just so they had a matching set? Or do you get what you like, regardless?

Nope, I don''t match. I''d rather have the best (I can afford) for each item! I do like to keep it within the same colour scheme though - mine is stainless, my mum has an all-white.

My washer, dryer and fridge/freezer are all the same brand. I didn''t realise when I was buying them. I just picked out the ones I liked. It wouldn''t bother me if they weren''t the same brand as long as they are the same style.

I am the freak that likes to have all of the same name brand.

Kama: I plan to do the same thing...buy the best I can afford of what I like the most. Guess it wouldn''t matter if I planned to put appliances in the house simply to sell it but, since I will be using them for a few years, I need to get what I will enjoy using.

Maisie: That''s amazing! Each piece I like the best is a different brand!

Tacori: I''m sure you are not alone! Do you feel that you "settled" on one of the appliances just to get the same brand name? If so, have you adjusted or does it still bug you a bit?

I purposely didn''t want my appliances by the same company because I picked each appliance for it''s features not the brand. The company that makes the best dishwashers doesn''t necessarily make the best range or frig.

I go for matching color scheme more than brand. It ties everything together in the long run.

Me too me too!

That being said, we''re going to look weird for a while b/c we have white appliances and I want black, so the white dishwasher that finally conked out will be replaced with black.

don''t care if they are the same brand as long as they are all goo quality, but I like them to have a similar style and the same color scheme.

Yep, they should match in color. . .we did renovate a house a few years (four or five years back - something like that) and decided to get all the same brand and sacrificed a good design of fridge for the one of that same brand. The fridge''s ice maker took up half the interior and we had no room for food.

I cannot stand side-by-side fridges - the doors rarely fit full-size frozen pizzas

. Ours is one with the fridge on the top and the freezer on the bottom. At first that was weird, but now I really like it since all we usually get out of the freezer is ice cubes and or frozen treats.

I''m not sure what brands we have. Everything is white except the glass cooktop is black. Everything blends nicely. Since we''re renting, I don''t care as much, but if we bought, I''d love to eventually turn the glass cooktop into a gas one!
Hope this makes sense. . .I''m half asleep.

I would get the best one I could and would not care if the brands are the same.

No, and they are not.

I go for features and have rarely (once?) had the chance to replace all appliances all at once.

I prefer to get the appliances that best suit our needs, and we did that. None of our appliances come from the same manufacturer. They do harmonize with each other or have panels that match the cabinetry.

just checked = fridge is kenmore, glass stove-top GE, dishwasher maytag, and double oven Amana.

no way - I mean I *get* the attraction but I wouldn''t sacrifice quality for matchy-matchy. Ditto my computer and entertainment equipment... the best CD player isn''t necessarily the best equalizer and they don''t necessarily come from the people who make the best DVD player or the guys who do the best surround sound. I''d much rather have exactly the fridge I want, the stove I want, the oven I want, the dishwasher I want - who cares if they are the same brand? I would want them the same color though lol

Mine are all the same brand and the same shade of bisque.

LOL! Tacori, I''m that freak too!

When we bought our house, the appliances that the sellers left behind were VERY much in need of being replaced! So DH got me all new kitchen appliances for my birthday that year, since my birthday was only about a month after we moved into the house. I was so excited! I got to pick out a new fridge, new stove, new dishwasher and new range hood/microwave. They''re all black and they''re all GE!

Well it certainly seems I am not alone and others prefer a fridge of this brand, a dishwasher of that brand, etc. I will be buying all stainless so they should blend nicely. I don''t know that anyone would notice the different brands, anyway.

packrat: I''m going to look weird right along with you. I have replaced two items, fridge (Maytag) and microwave (Samsung)--both stainless, so we still have the original almond stove and dishwasher (both GE). Dishwasher is next on my list...plus it broke right after my husband lost his job last year but he''s back working and we are ready to replace it. I have no idea when we can replace the stove so we won''t match for a while longer.

MC: I totally understood your post even if you were half asleep...LOL! I have replaced the fridge because we got a super-fantastic deal even though the one I had worked just fine. (I did find a family in need who is currently enjoying it) I avoided the side-by-side mostly because my MIL fussed about the lack of room in hers all the time. She actually had to cook a frozen pizza as soon as she got home from grocery shopping because it would not fit. The store where I bought my fridge (Maytag french door with bottom drawer freezer--LOVE IT!) had many different empty pizza cartons, soda bottles and cans, and yogurt cups so you could see if they would fit in the different spaces. I thought that was a great idea and I carried all those cartons to each fridge to test it...especially the pizza box.

I am a kitchen designer, and I often see appliance dealers pushing for "packages" of appliances from one mfg. - IMO it is NOT necessary - in fact, when you get into some of the high end brands, they specialize, and may not offer all appliances - for instance, there are no "Sub-Zero" ranges.

[The Sub Zero company did purchase the Wolf range company a number of years ago - and they are making a marketing push to link the two brands in peoples minds.]

Even when they are doing the whole works [cabinets, countertops, flooring, appliances] I have often had clients who splurged on a high end range [Wolf, Viking...etc] because they love to cook, but were very happy with a more standard refrigerator brand.

When people are not doing an entire make-over, it is pretty common to replace one appliance at a time - if you are changing to stainless, I say go for it - buy the appliance that you want, and change the rest of them out as your budget and priorities allow!!

When we bought our house, the kitchen had matching stainless steel appliances but the refrigerator was AWFUL. I''ll spare you the details. When I went shopping for a new one, I looked for what I wanted and loved and not the brand. I ended up with a KitchenAid and the rest of the appliances are Frigidaire. I don''t care, I love my refrigerator!!

Mine all match because I fell in love with the color. They are all a merlot color. I still love the color, but Viking - not so much

If I had stainless appliances, I would mix and match according to their ratings.

haha high five to Dianne for our non color coordinated appliances!

iluvcarats..merlot appliances? I bet that''s pretty! I''ve seen bronze ones-just in a magazine tho.

Me, too! Gorgeous kitchen and I''m loving that merlot color. I see why you had to stick with a set...not everyone offers merlot color.

HI ILC:

How come you don''t like the Viking--almost bought their range....

cheers--Sharon

I''m not one for matching up either. When we moved in the appliances were assorted colors, rather old and needed to be replaced. It started with the 12 year old DW which wouldn''t have held up for our first Thanksgiving. After the first stainless steel piece arrived , one thing lead to another and then we were fully committed to an entire kitchen reno.

We redid the kitchen with different manufacturers, depending on what we wanted in an appliance but are all stainless steel so they blend. We wanted a Wolf range, and got a Kitchen Aid oven and microwave/combined convection oven, which basically serves as two ovens, and is one of the most useful features we have in the kitchen. GE for the refrigerator and DW. Only the two GE''s are near each other, and they all work great in the room.

It makes much more sense to research and get the best dishwasher, stove whatever for the features and for the price. BUT. . . .

I am one of those severe anal retentives that must have matching stuff. I know it''s not the intelligent way to shop or choose but I can''t help myself!!

Ohhh lordy iluvcarats! THAT is the direction I would go if we could afford it!
