Let's say you want to buy a a signature ideal H&A diamond (like WF's ACA) diamond for 5-7k. would you get an appraisal when the ring arrives or take it for what they say it is?

the problem is that it's not cheap to get an appraisal! i saw quotes for like $200 from a certified appraiser.

i have no plans to get it insured... doesn't seem worth it at all.

i'm just trying to gather what would be in my best interests if i receive an e-ring. thanks.

Not me.
I have a loupe and can match inclusions in the stone to the plot on the lab report.
I have a calipers and can measure the diameter and depth of a loose stone. (Be gentle with that pointed culet at the bottom.)

Since it was graded by AGS and is from Whiteflash I'd have a very high comfort level, since I have bought an ACA from them before.

I might bring it to a pawn shop or local jeweler to weigh it and use their diamond tester, but even then I may not even bother with that.

But that's just me.

Appraiser offer many legitimate services, but I have never felt I needed them.
Verifying the stone matches the report (to my comfort level) is not that hard with a legit vendor and lab report.

Also twice I have driven diamonds directly to GIA in Carlsbad California and they verified the stone matched the report.
It used to be free.
Now I think they charge, perhaps $75.

I''ve never felt the need to get an appraisal. If I don''t trust the vendor, I don''t buy from them. Sure, mistakes happen, but to be honest, I don''t really care, so long as I''m happy with the stone.

I would insure it, personally. If $200 for an appraisal seems like a lot of money, I don''t think you''re going to want to pay another few thousand for a replacement at any point. The only time I''ve had appraisals done is to keep the value current for insurance on some of my more valuable rings. Insuring it from new, I''ve always just used the invoice as proof of value.

Hi jdazer

Whether to get an appraisal or not is entirely a personal choice and down to your comfort level, all you can do is what is right for you.

Concerning insurance, I believe if you cannot afford to replace the item should something happen to it then you need insurance, but again thats down to the individual.
