Do you prefer 75% or 80% Lower Half Facet Length?

All else being equal, so assume GIA ExExEx, AGS OOO, HCA <2, do you prefer a stone with 75% LF or 80% LF?

I'm stuck deciding between the two. I understand that this can be a matter of personal taste and preference. And I understand that the GIA reports have a rounding variance as well. Just curious what the masses and pros think.

Thanks,

SJ

75% (up to 77%), can't stand the splintery ones myself, but that's just a personal preference.

here's a video on LGF lengths:

75% - 77% for me, apparently. My first H&A had 80% an there was always "something" about that stone that I didn't like. So I upgraded and the new one is 77% and I like its arrows better. I like fat arrows.

Thanks for posting that link, bastet. While I'm not an RB girl, it's still a super useful video. It's good for understanding cut, in general.

I second the thanks as well. Very informative in regards to the effect on sparkle/scintillation that LGF lengths have. Interesting to hear that 75-77% stands out as the preference currently. I can understand this as the arrows would be more pronounced in theory. And if you buy a H&A diamond, seeing those arrows would be a cool thing.

While you get more sparkle at 80%. The difference does appear negligible except to perhaps the most discerning eye.

It depends on the rest of the proportions.

PS also goes through phases/trends. Unfortunately, LGF 76 will get rounded to 75 and 78 will get rounded to 80 by GIA, when there is not really that much difference between the two.

you're welcome! :wavey:

LOL. Of all the things to boast as trendy... your stone's LGF length  You're right though, short is "in" right now!

I like fat arrows. :)

Me too, I prefer fatter arrows.

Unless you are getting a really large diamond, I don't think 75-80 really matters. The contrast is with the August Vintage Rounds which have much fatter LGF's than the 75-80. I really, really wouldn't get too caught up in that. I have never seen a diamond choice boil down to that particular factor. There is almost always something else that will sway me to one stone over another. I don't know if you have posted your two possibilities, but I'll bet we might be able to tell you other reasons to take one over another.

I would pause the theoretical speculation and wait until your vendor has both stones in hand.

FIC with fat arrows is not going to be as bright as more typical Tolk combos.

Yes FIC's work better with longer lgf% but with a 40.6 pavilion if the actual angles are close then it isn't that big a deal if one likes the look.
More contrasty then a tolk would be a better term than less bright.

As far as 75% vs 80% it depends on the combo. 56t/34.5/40.7/76LGF% would have about the same visual arrows as a 56t/34/41/80Lgf%. 77-78 works with the widest range of combos.

GIA numbers grumble grumble... to rounded for DC.
Looking at the pic the lgf is likely right around 75 and the c/p work with each other.
This is one of those stones that cant be dismissed out of hand unless one is looking for H&A.
On the other hand it is impossible to say the person will or wont like it compared to near tolk or longer lgf FIC.
Overall a less sure option than some when buying online.
A good return policy would be a must.
