Do you rinse the soap off your dishes ?

My Scottish MIL didn’t rinse her dishes after washing them by hand.

Handwash. Always rinse the soap off. I don't think ingesting dried soap is good for human bodies.

I do not use my dishwasher unless I have company as it is just two of us. I do rinse the soap and never heard of doing otherwise. @kenny ’s bar glass cleaning description has me skeeved out! Blah!!

I haven't washed dishes by hand in 50 years. I would rinse 100%.

I've watched them "clean" glasses in bars here in California, even expensive ones.

There are 3 sinks, side by side, no running water - all full of sitting water.
Glob only knows how old that water is. :eek2:
The first one has visible suds floating on the water.
The next 2 don't.
They don't even scrub the glass.
It's just:
Dip in first.
Dip in second.
Dip in third.
Place up side down on rubber netlike pad to air dry.
That's it. :knockout:
I've been served drinks with red lipstick on the wine glass rim.
Probably think some guys think that's hot, maybe even touch themselves in their special NONO place. :naughty::naughty:

Uhm, hey bartender can I please get a beer in a bottle.

If you want to really get queasy---pay attention the next time you are in a hotel. Very few hotels actually have fresh glasses on the cleaning cart. The maids wash out your used glasses/coffee cups in the bathroom sink. Hopefully they use detergent and hot water and not the rag the used on the toilet.

So when we stay in hotels---I have small dish soap with me and wash the glasses myself with hot water. Occasionally at high end hotels I see that they re-stock with clean glasses on the cart. But usually the cart has no glassware. Yuck.

I stack everything in the sink. I don't fill the sink with water. I put soap on my scrubber and wash the least dirty items first. I rinse the soap off above the other items so they are getting rinsed. When I get to the last and dirtiest item, it has been rinsed off repeatedly and is easier to clean. Yes, I am turning my faucet on and off repeatedly, but I have my method. Everything air dries in the drying rack before being put away. I have a dishwasher but have never used it. This works well for my husband and me with no kids.

I would not dream of not washing off the soap - yuck! I do remember, however, when my kids were young that sometimes dish soap was squirted directly into the plastic cups they drank from. If you were not extra careful with rinsing, they would complain of their drink tasting like soap. Never had that issue with a cup made of glass. I learned to put the dish soap on the dishrag and not squirt directly into the cup!

I rinse the soap off when I wash a dish by hand. Soap is toxic when ingested.

I don't have, or want, a dishwasher.
Tiny house/kitchen where real estate is $$$$$$$.
Besides, I prefer washing by hand.
I like work.
Me too!. All it takes is 5 mins to wash and rinse the dishes. Our dishwasher is a 33 yrs old virgin that came with the house.. . I can't stand leaving unwashed dishes in the sink. I must wash the dishes as soon as we finish dinner.

In the old days, a sink for hot soapy water with a touch of bleach. A sink for rinsing off the soap. scraps went into a compost pile for the garden. animal fat was reused a few times, grandmother and my mom even kept a can on the stove for this purpose. Very little food wise went to waste, packaging was rinsed before being put away (especially aluminum and plastic) we reused lots of stuff.

My grandfather would come over once a week to pick up our compost container for the garden *he didn't have to he just liked having something to do...lol*

We had chores before we went to school (mostly our room and neatening the house, though we rotated being the dishwasher once a week) and after school was homework/family time.

These days I'm lazy...lol I will indeed stick all the stuff in the dishwasher. I do not like the smell of funky dishes or a dirty dishwasher, I wash things in general every other day, rinsing before they go in the dishwasher. I use a capful of bleach with every wash.

We have a dishwasher but mainly wash by hand and yes we rinse the soap off.

The worst is getting a clean glass from the cabinet and filling it with water only to have suds floating in the glass because it wasn't rinsed properly.

That’s revolting! Every bar and restaurant I worked in while at uni had a steriliser and sink of hot soapy water. Glasses were hot washed every time. Lipstick did get missed if you just used a brush to clean the glass but I always made a point of using a cloth to get it off.
I’m sure that’s still the practice here cos you can usually see the cleaning set up through a door

I use my dishwasher, but there are things I hand wash, like big pots, some of my glassware, and my good knives. When I wash things in the sink, I do not fill the sink with water, I soap and rinse under running water and then dry things on a drying cloth on the counter. I know some people fill the sink, first with soapy water and then with clean water, but that was not how my mom did it.
Most things go in the dishwasher. Now that there are only two of us here, it runs maybe every 2-3 days.

@kenny as disgusting as the three sink system seems, I’m pretty sure it’s the setup required by CA code for places without a mechanical dishwasher. I’ve also seen it at a restaurant and at an ice cream shop.

Sounds about right....

So I'm late to this thread & haven't read all the replies. But when my father in law was diagnosed with terminal cancer, my mother in law was told in no uncertain terms to make sure ALL dishes were detergent free after washing. His cancer had spread everywhere, including to his stomach & bowels, so they said to avoid any further irritation, squeaky clean was key.

As a result, I use my dishwasher daily. But anything I DO wash by hand, is rinsed thoroughly in hot water.

I also wash anything I'm doing by hand under hot running water with rubber gloves on. I never fill the sink to wash lots of things in.

We have a very small countertop dishwasher. We mostly use it for plates, flatware, and cups. Everything big gets washed in the sink and yes we rinse. I can't stand the idea of eating soap. I don't like using soap with fragrance because I don't even like to smell it. Same for our clothes.

I wash my dishes very quickly by hand with soap and hot water. Then I’ll load the dishwasher. I don’t rinse the soap off before loading it..but there’s no food on the dishes at all. I’m in Maryland now..The dishwasher is small here so I run it every night from dishes washed during the day. The dishwasher rinses everything off.

Isnt it using alot of water to wash the dishes before you put them in the dishwasher ?
(I scape the food scapes off but my disheasher washes off baked on egg and burnt on stuff )

But this seems very commin amoung the replies

also we are told not to leave taps running because it wastes water

i grew up on a restricted water supply and with a septic tank
Maybe that's one of the reasons here ?

Wait. Do some people wash dishes in the sink and take them out of the soapy water and put them in the drying rack? I rinse my dishes after washing in soapy water. I also rinse my own dishes if they come out of the dishwasher because I have a low water dishwasher and am grossed out by the potential for them not to be rinsed enough. I am bothered by the taste of soap even on dishwasher items.

Ew. Not rinsing the soap off is actually a thing? I wash some stuff by hand and most stuff in the dishwasher, which is actually more environmentally friendly than washing by hand.

Yes
in NZ we do this, take the dishes out of the soapy sink without rinsing

I only found out not everyone does this when i read the article i posted in my OP

I don't like to leave my dishes to dry in the rack
i dry them with a tea towel and put them away
I use alot of tea towels

I used to because my sister would yell at me if I didn't, then my wife came along who didn't wash off the soap and when we were all living together and my sister yelled at me I told her that my wife doesn't do it. My sister never complained again

We have a dishwasher now.

I can't fathom not rinsing off every individual piece, immediately after washing, with running hot water.
A basin filled with hot clean water for rinsing (via dipping) is no longer clean after the first dip.

I had no idea anyone actually dipped, or didn't even do that and just left soap residue on dishes, at home.
Yuck! :knockout:

Before the virus we only had a few dishes. We ate out all the time. Now we have a full load every night and I wash them on sanitize to make sure they are clean. I can’t even imagine not rinsing off the soapy water. I just read an article in Apple news by Cascade soap that says not to prerinse dishes before the dishwasher because it dilutes the cleaning power of the detergent. All modern dishwashers have Garbage disposers built in.

Imagine my shock when I was washing up at someone elses house, was rinsing the dishes after soaping and got stopped. I was shown to start directly drying the soapy dishes. If you're at someone else's house what are you meant to do except observe their ways? It was the weirdest feeling eveeerrr.
