Do you wear rings 24 hrs a day?

Please describe how many and which rings you wear and when if you'd like.

I'm curious because I've never worn a ring before and I can't decide when it's safe to wear my new ring.

I'm erring on the side of caution because I don't know what I'm doing, I don't want to scratch or dent my ring, and I figure it will only be new once so I shouldn't risk harming it.

I've noticed many women and some men who wear gold rings all the time. This one woman in particular I noticed is a cashier and loads groceries into paper bags and doesn't seem to be thinking about her rings and all. They seem fine. But it would scare me.

When do you wear your rings and when don't you? I'm curious. I'll probably wear mine more as time goes on but should I wear it when I go to sleep? Etc. I don't know.

Great question, Imdanny! I got married a month ago and started wearing a plain engraved wedding band & a chunkier bezeled eternity band on my left hand and switched my engagement ring to my right hand. While I take off the diamond rings each night before bed, I have left my wedding band on 24/7. But I am worried that the engraving/milgraining will wear down over time and I will be left with a plain platinum band. I always assumed I would wear a wedding band constantly though...

Would love to hear from others on this!

I think for rings with stones the advice is usually on the side of caution, and definitely no wear during sleep. However, when the time comes for me to wear a wedding band (which will be plain YG band, probably on the fatty side), I'm planning to never take it off. Mostly for sentimental reasons. I think I won't mind too much if it gets some scratches or dents, but hopefully nothing too serious. A guy I knew used to wear his wedding band while working at a factory, and that ring got really beat up, practically torn. That's an extreme I wouldn't push, of course. But loading grocery bags and doing dishes -- no problem for me.

I don't wear any jewelry at all when I sleep. It all comes off, even if I'm just taking a nap - but that's just due to habit, not necessarily to protect the jewelry.

I usually think to remove my rings when I'm gardening or something, but for the most part my stuff is pretty sturdy, and I don't do too many things that could damage my rings in any way. I do leave the jewelry at home when I go to the gym. (actually, that should have been in the past tense :wink2: )

No, and I probably wouldn't if I could. My fingers swell badly in my sleep, so it HURTS to do it. I have occasionally done so with my thin plain one, but if I am going to really be using my hands (cooking, cleaning, showering, gardening which I never do, whatever) I don't wear any rings.

I only wear them when I go out. Truth is, I don't love wearing rings. Love the look and all, but need my hands to be free of rings when I am home. Washing dishes, cleaning, doing laundry etc...

The only thing I am super careful about when wearing them out, is unloading the grocery cart...

Once I am home off they come, so don't have to worry about them scratching, or the puppy biting at my hands... I put them in the same place, so I never lose them either...

HTH... :))

I can't.. my hands swell at night. I mostly wear them out now.

BTW I love that you're such a newbie at wearing a ring and asking all these questions!

I did hear somewhere along the line that chlorine can damage gold, and of course I want to keep my jewelry away from anything abrasive so I do make a point of taking the rings off when doing housecleaning that involves chemicals etc. I have a little cup hook hidden in the cupboard nearest the kitchen sink, just inside the cupboard door, as a place to park a ring or watch when I'm cleaning in the kitchen. It's also one of the first places I look when I've misplaced a ring!

One of my SILs lost her engagement ring when she left it on the window sill above her kitchen sink... they figure a mouse or something got it and stashed it away somewhere. They left their contact information in the under-sink cabinet, just in case it's uncovered in a future renovation or something!

I wear my engagement ring and wedding band on my left ring finger and occasionally wear rings on my right ring finger.

I only wear rings when I leave the house and I honestly don't worry about them at all when I'm out of the house. As soon as I get home the jewelry comes off-it gets on my nerves to wear it at the house. I also never wear my rings working out. It blows my mind when I see women working out with their e-ring and wedding band on!

The only ring I wear 24/7 is my plain wedding band. I take the others (eternity, e-ring, spacer, and RHR) off as soon as I get home and put them on again in the morning after I've finished getting ready for the day.

Yep, I always wear my rings (ER/wedding band). The only time I ever take them off is when I shower and if I am putting lotion on/applying hair product. I've been wearing it this way for almost a year with no damage or any issues!

I also wear this one ring I have from Swarovski that I love, love, love but thats not every single day!

I know no one in my life who takes their rings off. I mean, ever! My Nanny (Grandmother, but don't you dare call her that!) owns a body shop and she paints cars with her rings on!!

While I take my rings off when I'm cleaning or making food where my hands will need to be fully involved (i.e. hand mixing anything), I don't take them off to sleep. I currently have my engagement ring on my left hand and a simple twisted band on my right hand that I wear since my mother has a matching band. I clean my rings all the time and I do remove them if I'm not doing gentle tasks, but FI gave me the ring to wear, not sit in a box. I plan to wear my wedding bands everyday as well and they will have diamonds in the band. I'll probably end up remove those more often for safety reasons, but they will be worn practically all the time.

I typically only wear my rings when I'm leaving the house.

I take them off to sleep, shower, wash dishes, clean, cook, do my nails, play with the dogs, exercise, do my hair, or when I do any type of artsy thing with my hands.

I keep a silver elephant ring holder in the kitchen and put them there when I'm doing things around the house. I keep a crystal ring holder in the bedroom and keep my rings there at night.

I wear my upgrade ring with a little twist band on my left hand, and my grandmother's ring with my wedding band on my ring hand. That's it! (Though one day I plan to have a lovely RHR. I'm thinking a big emerald cut would do . . . )

I only take my ring off to shower, wash dishes, or move furniture. This is because my house has been burglarized before and I am leery of not having valuables on my person. I'd hate to forget it one day and come home to find it gone.

My YG wb is a 24/7 ring. My diamonds come off at night or if I'm going to do anything that could involve risk or gunky stuff in the prongs. I had a platinum solitaire that was able to take a beating and I'd occassionally buff that and my WB with a cloth I have, and it would return to its (almost) original lustre.

But that's just a new thing - prior to getting better diamonds, I rarely took my rings off and I probably only had about 2 - 3 decent rings to rotate around with. Geesh, in the last year, I've kinda gone insane with new jewels!!

My current set gets worn 24/7 except when showering and putting lotion on afterwards and when cooking, if I need to hand mix anything. But other than that, my rings are never taken off. I only clean them like 1x a week, too! Such a bad PS'er now!

I wear my class ring every single day. I got it in... 2007? Maybe 08. I'm not completely sure. I've had it for a few solid years and I haven't missed many days of wearing it. It's 14k white gold, six prongs with a lab alexandrite (I know, the horror of a lab stone, but it's pretty and sentimental). One of its prongs are slightly out of place, but it's been that way for a long time and I'm not sure when it happened. It has a couple of dings and scratches, but nothing that I think affects the overall visual appeal and it's held up to my clumsy self slinging it against walls and what-not.

ETA: forgot to mention, I only take it off for sleeping and showering and doing dishes (and similar things), but for the rest of the day until I go to bed at night, it's on my finger no matter where I am. I'll treat my engagement ring the same way and I doubt I'll take my wedding band off much at all.

My wedding set (solitaire e-ring and bezeled diamond band) stays on all the time, except in the following circumstances:
When I clean them
If I'm putting on lotion or hair product
When I'm scrubbing the tub
Kneading meatloaf, bread dough, etc
Sailing (rings + ropes = injuries waiting to happen)

My rings are platinum, so I'm less concerned about thinning than if they were gold. And while I know I SHOULD treat them better, the reality is that I'm bad at remembering to put them back on if I take them off, so I do that as little as possible. A couple weeks ago, I took them off to put my hair goop in and didn't remember to put them until the next day, when I went to take them off again and panicked because they weren't on my finger! Anyway, feeling comfortable about wearing my rings basically all the time is a big reason they are a) modest and b) insured.

Danny--I should add that my DH has a terrible habit of taking his ring off and spinning it on its side. The problem with this habit is that the spinning doesn't always go well, and sometimes he ends up shooting it across rooms. This is why he's found himself running like a maniac through the Denver airport, multiple restaurants, and other strange places.

I would recommend not getting into the habit of spinning your ring. :cheeky:

He only wears his ring when we're going out, or when he's going out on his own or with friends. He doesn't wear it in the house, and he doesn't wear it to work because he works with his hands and it annoys him.

I take mine off for cleaning, gardening and showering, I wear a ebay eternity band to work and the wedding set the rest of the time. I will bang it on something once in awhile and look at it right away but otherwise I think they are pretty sturdy. I am amazed in these threads how many people take their jewelery off to sleep! Apparently my bedroom is a much tamer place then most :o I can't imagine what could happen to them worse there then say the grocery store or out and about  I guess maybe they could get some lotion or something on them :naughty:

I wear my grandmother's gold ring on my right ring finger pretty much 24/7.

I wear my wedding set on my left ring finger and take both rings off before cleaning the house, playing golf, moving heavy objects or using my hands to work with messy things. In addition, I take the e-ring off and keep the wedding band on for situations when I don't want someone to see the e-ring.

I'm amazed that some DON'T take off their rings to sleep!

My fear is that a prong would get caught in a thread from the sheets or something. Or I'd bang my hand against the headboard at night.

I wear a 2mm comfort fit 14K band almost all the time...the only time it comes off is if I am putting my "set" on when I am going out...and alot of the time I just throw my ering on with the plain band, I have been wearing this plain band for about a year now, it does get scratched up, but I guess that doesnt bother me, I know it can be "buffed" out if I need it to be.

My jewelry comes off as soon as I get home, and doesn't come back on until I leave home. I do alot of work at home. :)

I'm with Kaleigh- I only wear my rings when I'm out of the house. They are the last thing I put on in the morning and the first thing I take off when I get home. I wear and enjoy them while I'm out (being VERY careful at the grocery or hardware store- anywhere I'm lifting stuff) but no need to damage/wear them any more than necessary when I'm home, unless I'm having people over for dinner and the preparation is finished!

This may partly be affected by the fact that I can't wear my wedding band alone because it would slip off, but I want my rings to "wear" evenly if that makes sense...

I take off my wedding set when I sleep and when I'm at home since there's a lot of micropave and engraving that I'm uneasy about banging about.

But since I have so many RHR, I just wear those when I'm putzing around the house so I still have pretty things to admire (and lets be honest, I'd hardly have time to wear my RHRs otherwise!).

I take all my rings off when I sleep though, I'm another person that has swell prone fingers in my sleep. Also, my hubby finds them scratchy. I might wear a plain wedding band though if it were comfortable.

I'm with Kaleigh, thing2, and Echidna. I really don't like the feel of wearing rings and only wear them when I go to work or go out. They come off as soon as I get home and I never sleep with them on.

I wear my wedding set all the time. My wedding band is plain gold and my engagement ring is a .8 carat solitaire in a "tiffany" setting. They are 14K gold with platinum prongs for the diamond. The only time I take off my engagement ring is to clean it, I leave my wedding band on all the time. I wear the set to bed, to the beach, while gardening...whatever. Now I would definitely not do this if I had the kind of rings that many have here -- what is the point of all kinds of ornate design if you are going to let it get scratched up? But, I like the patina that worn gold takes on. About 10 years ago I had both rings resized a half size larger. I was so upset when I picked them up and they were polished to look new! Now I feel like I only have 10 years worth of wear on them when I should have 23.

Wedding band most of the time unless I am cleaning or cooking/baking. Solitaire will be when I go out or if I can't resist sitting and looking at it for a while :D

I leave my 2mm platinum band on 24/7, but take everything else off as soon as I get home.
