Do your gemstones have to match?

Do you guys think that your earring have to match your necklace and rings etc? I have amethyst earrings (family heirlooms) and a pink sapphire ring do they need to match? Can I wear them at the same time?

Not at all. I have worn my red spinel earrings with my spessartite ring. I have also worn my amethyst earrings with my red spinel ring. Basically, I wear what I want but for special occasions, I opt to match my set as closely as I can, or wear my completed set.

I don''t match my shoe to my purse and I don''t necessarily match my gems. I do try to keep everything look harmonious together.

I often wear my baby paraiba ring on one hand, stacked with a pink tourmaline, and my spinel on the other, along with an amethyst necklace. I love pinks and blues together.

I never worry overly much about things matching. Currently I''m wearing a red spinel ring on one hand and my wedding rings with my sapphire/diamond band plus my demantoid band ring on the other hand (so red, blue and green on the hands.) My earrings and necklace are both red garnets.

Heck no gemstones don''t have to match. Wear what you love.

Hmmmm? Today I''m wearing a violet blue spinel, a bright blue/green paraiba, and a orange spessartite garnet. I guess they don''t have to match for me.

I try to keep my earrings and my pendants at least non-clashy, if not perfectly matchy ... but when it comes to rings, anything goes!

I actually do group my jewelry into matched sets and wear them that way. They're not always the same stones but usually complementary colors. I'm also a shoe-purse matcher, so take that with a grain of salt.

ETA: I would definitely wear purples and pinks together.

I''m not very matchy, so i wear all sorts of different things together - i often wear pink sapphire earrings and a blue topaz ring together. Typically i never wear necklaces.

No I don''t always match. But I enjoy having "sets" that all go together in some way. Say earrings that have Amy. in them and then an Amy. ring in a different shape.

And I also mix metal colors!

I don''t wear earrings so it''s just necklace and ring, and no, I never match! In fact, I have no matching things, lol..

The only two pendants I wear regularly are my diamond flower pendant from WF, and my tanzanite pendant from Gene/Sally. Diamonds go with everything really, and my tanzanite doesn''t really match any of my other jewelery. I don''t really care though!

I think purple and pink go together well enough to wear those at the same time.
What I would look for when seeing someone wearing colored gems (if the gems are a large enough size, and brightly colored enough to actually notice them--I wouldn''t worry so much for instance, about dark, neutral looking sapphires) would be if the whole outfit was coordinated. The whole package--clothes, handbag, shoes, everything--with jewelry as part of the whole looking harmonious rather than necessarily ''matching''. I don''t know if this makes sense?
People who did this superbly well would include the late Princess Diana, the Duchess of Windsor and many of the Hollywood beauties of the thirties and forties (if you can find color photos them). These women all wore colored gems, often very large ones and had an elegant (not necessarily ''matchy'')look. Wallis Simpson (the Duchess of Windsor) I think is probably the very best example--and a superb example in general of someone who knew how to make all her clothes, all the time, work for her, jewelry very much included and was elegant and stylish to the point that it didn''t matter anymore that she was actually not pretty, not young (over forty when the King abdicated for her) and didn''t even have a good figure.

OK so now I understand that I must buy a new wardrobe that coordinates with my gemstones. That way I won't have to worry about age or weight!! LOL

But I do think you have a point. I often wear my Orange Garnet with a green jacket and it makes the stone pop more!

Not necessarily. I think you should wear what you want.

I always try to incorporate some white diamonds into colored-stone jewelry, for instance HALO (again!) so they can always match with diamond e-ring and earring (which I wear all the time)

Nope! Then again, I usually wear diamond studs, so its just a pendant vs. RHR. They''re far apart enough that I don''t think its a biggie. For special occasions though, I might wear a "set".

JMO - and only for myself - when I "match" my outfits, I get more compliments, but in the mirror, I look old-fashioned. So, with a full-time job and a 6 year old, do I have the time to "match" stones in the morning? Certainly, not! I try to do it when I go out, but only for "formal" events, like an evening, an expensive dining out or an opera. So, at the moment, a am wearing a ruby ring, an alexandrite ring, a sapphire bracelet, and a spessartine necklace. I''d like to have more sets, though, but it takes time and money.

I usually try to do a color match and try not to wear too many color pieces. Between a right hand ring, a pendant, and a pair of earrings, I will try to pick matching color for two out of the three, and the third one being just white diamonds. The only set I have are my ruby earrings and a ruby pendant, so I don''t have many chances to wear a set :)

That much being said, all gem stones are beautiful so feel free to wear whatever you like!

I don''t have enough gemstones to have everything match. I am finding that as I get more bezel set cabochon pieces, that those pieces look nice together because of the similar settings. I have a round green tsavorite cab set in a pear shaped gold pendant that I think looks really nice with my pear shaped Oregon sunstone ring. The shapes and the color of the sunstone picks up the shape and color of the gold pendant, even though the stones themselves are completely different colors.

I''d certainly wear amethyst earrings with a pink sapphire ring. Sounds lovely.

Thanks everyone!

I don''t match anything. Most of the time I''m in pajamas and sweats and they don''t really match either, so yeah..I''m kind of a mess. I''m a sparkly mess sometimes tho.

That''s OK! I once left the house having forgotten to put on makeup but I had cleaned my gemstones that morning before putting them on! LOL

So I looked a mess but my jewelry looked good.

I never match anything, at least on purpose. I'll coordinate sometimes though. If I tried to match handbags to shoes, I would be screwed in a hot minute, and have to start buying A LOT of handbags.

Yesterday I wore what I wanted to: silver sandals, swiss blue topaz ring, blue spinel ring (ering), amethyst necklace, gray cotton dress, london blue topaz colored strapless shirt (under the low necked dress), jean jacket and carried my bright blue bag. Match? Not really!
