Does 1mm make a huge difference in appearance?

Does 1mm make a huge difference in diamond appearance on the finger? I feel like one would need to jump more than 1mm to really see a difference. I’m looking to upgrade my diamond for my 15 year anniversary. Though I want an elongated shape for my short, stubby fingers, another RB has caught my attention.

It’s just hard for me comprehend thought that I’d be paying so much more for 1mm upgrade from what I have now.

Current RB 6.25 - 6.30 x 3.88 vs. RB 7.47-7.41 x 4.93

Would that be a noticeable difference in appearance?

Yes. You will notice a difference between a 6.3 and 7.4.
Only you can say if it is " worth it" to you though!

Oh yes, that would be an appreciable, easily visible difference! As above poster notes, only you can decide if the size increase is worth it to you. However, if you've been imagining an elongated diamond as your upgrade, I'm not sure even a visibly larger RB will really please you in the end.

Thank you @tyty333 for the visual. That's a cool app you got there! My current RB is in a halo setting and for my upgrade, I'm ditching the halo for a more traditional look (as least, that's what I'm wanting now, LOL - preference subject to change). With that said, I wanted to add more presence since I'll be losing the halo. Your visual really helps me see it! Thank you for posting it!

@marymm and @tyty333, I agree with you both 100%! Worth is only judged by those evaluating its value. I'm wanting to upgrade to something different than what I have now, but I do love a good classic RB too! One can never go wrong with a classic! Thank you both for replying to my post!!

THANK YOU @ILikeShiny! That's a fantastic visual! Your post really helps me "see" the difference. I appreciate it!

the bigger stone will also have more depth so depending on the setting it'll be obvious that the overall volume is larger as well. congrats on 15 years!!

You will DEFINITELY see a difference between 6.3 and 7.4!

You can check out other different sizes on diamdb.com, as shown above.

I think so! I went up 1mm width in my new EC and over 1/2 mm in length. Looks bigger, BUT... you will definitely get use to it quickly and then start to think it looks the same as your last:cry2: so I say go as big as possible/ affordable in an upgrade:)

If you are going from a haloed 6.3 to an unhaloed 7.4, I am not sure that you will be satisfied with the overall finger coverage/appearance. Depending on how large the halo stones are, your current ring is probably visually somewhere in the 7.3-7.6 range maybe even larger

I agree with the others and think that 1mm does make quite a difference. If it were me I'd go the bigger size, I think you may feel the diamond is too small otherwise because of the previous diamond being haloed.

I wish it didn’t. I really did. Bc then I wouldn’t be coveting a 3 carat.

Yes, a 1mm is a big difference when we are talking diamonds. ;))

Yes. Personally I start noticing differences at the 0.2mm mark and the smaller the stone the smaller the difference in diameter increase for me to start seeing a big change.
So yes noticeable difference in this case IMO.

My advice is if you can swing the difference in price go for it. I feel most of us regret not going as large as we wanted to in the first place (budget constraints or modesty constraints etc) and if you love the extra size and can afford it go for it. I hope you end up with the stone of your dreams!

I did this exact thing... had a 2.43 ct (8.7 mm) set in a halo, then upgraded to a 3.33 ct (9.8 mm) and set in a solitaire -- so 1.1 mm difference in the diamonds. The first ring had just a bit more finger coverage, but the bigger diamond makes me like my soli much better. Although the soli has less overall finger coverage, it looks bigger in a different way... from lots of small, glittery flashes to bigger, bolder flashes - if that makes sense.

As part of a different topic (some research I am doing) I showed 2 1ct round diamonds with a 0.1mm diameter difference (both really nice cuts) to 6 staff in my jewelry store.
I put them both in one box, about a stone width apart and 6 people looked at it and identified the larger of the 2 within a few seconds each.

I did it with a different set with about 0.15mm and 3 people glanced at the box for less than a second and picked the larger stone.

Would a 0.1mm diameter difference in 2 rings on different hands or earrings on each ear be able to be picked – no way. Would 1mm stand out - you betcha.
+1mm diameter is a squared function of surface area.
