Does anyone not like their Welo bead necklace?

I've been thinking of getting one, however, I wonder what they are like in life as we know most opal pictures are not so true-to-life (black background, strong lighting).

Also, how does one know which vendor, set to choose? We all, sort of, know about good cut and dimensions but these seem trickier to select.

Thanks.

I'm looking forward to responses too. I've been wondering how strong the PoC is when worn, how strongly the necklace stands out and etc, understanding that it is dependent on the size of the bead and quality.

Here's a review of mine!

Pros:

1. Looks phenomenal in sunlight but not excellent in other lighting conditions although still good.
2. Good colourplay (mainly red in mine but that's what I wanted).
3. Delicate (if you like delicate)!

Cons:

4. Delicate (if you don't)!
5. Strands and gemstones are typically quite small - around 17" in length and typically 3-5mm for each gemstone.
6. Colourplay varies

When shopping around I noticed that there are 4 different varieties (1) white cloudy (2) yellow cloudy (3) white translucent (4) yellow translucent. I personally didn't think the cloudy ones looked effective so I stayed away from those (and I don't know whether they're good or bad as I haven't seen one). I plumped for the white translucent variety.

Then you get (1) red colourplay (2) blue/green colourplay (3) rainbow. Again, I went for the red but only because my intention was to de-strand the opals and make a necklace teaming them with rubies. The more effective colourplay I think are the blue/green ones.

Also, I would only go with a vendor who has a video. Then in your mind, downplay how much play of colour there will be and you're probably spot on.

For £30 I think I got a steal of a deal and for that price I couldn't really go wrong. I also intend to get a few more strands as I want to make one into a doubled bracelet and have one more strand for the necklace so I end up with a "bigger" look. I wouldn't pay over $100 for a strand though unless I could see and choose a piece.

A double strand of smaller Welos sound like a very cost effective way to get a bigger look since beads twice as large cost far more than 2 times the cost of the smaller beads.

Thanks so very much, all. I love a delicate look, so that part works. So, far the ones I've found either are too orange-y, have areas of dark beads or lots of dull ones. I don't know of / haven't seen any vendors that have videos on them, though. Sigh . . .

I bought one, and am going to string it into a two strand bracelet, with small pearls. I wanted to be able to see the fire. It definitely looks best in sunlight.
I just have it on wire right now because I'm deciding the length - and I didn't make any effort to match the opals, just threw them on.
I'll be more careful when I string it. The pearls are 5mm, which shows you how small the opals are.

I'm going to make it a bit longer so I can wear it over long sleeved tops, say back turtlenecks, to show off the colours!

I like it.
Here's a snap.

THAT BRACELET IS BEAUTIFUL!

Yes, it sure it !

Periwinkle girl, that's a very pretty bracelet! Great idea too as I feel the same way - I'd definitely want to see them while wearing them.

This thread is interesting bc I've been going back and forth over getting a strand of these. I like long (30-35 inch) necklaces with small tiny beads, so my thought was to get a strand but make a long beaded necklace with other beads mixed in. I was thinking about doing a long one with about 16 inches of welos and possibly 18 inches of mahenge spinel, as I just picked up an 18 inch strand of very small (3 mm) mahenges. BUT, I ended up changing my mind and going for a pink and green look, adding mint garnet and demantoid garnets. My jeweler is making it for me next week so we'll see how it ends up.

I keep thinking I'm going to have a welo one done, but this is the second time I've changed my mind about doing it and gone with something else. And then a thread like this comes along and makes me question it...I really think I need to break down and do it at some point!!

I know that my jeweler can source them at a decent price, but she has to make an appt at a place in NY for them, and she's told me that she doesn't like to go unless she's buying a couple of things as its a rather large outfit (so not really ideal to make an appt to go in and buy one $50-100 item). But if anyone decides they want a strand (I want the white), let me know bc I think she would go if two of us want in. The problem though would be that returns on this might be an issue. I know she would choose something nice, but she would need to know EXACTLY what we would want going in. (It's Yvonne Raley, btw).

Sorry for the long post but I was going over this issue with Yvonne literally yesterday, lol. And I thought I'd share just in case someone was looking for them and might be interested.

Periwinkle, that's so pretty and dainty. I like the colors! Such good ideas for beads.

I actually asked Yvonne about it before; but I'm a poor student so I think what we'd like are different, lol.

Well, you never know. I think she could get a couple of different strands and the pricing was under $100 per strand for what I wanted as of the last time she was in there. I'm not in a hurry right now - I've had a lot of projects in the works but they're almost all complete. From here on out I'm planning to scale way back in the number of projects I've got going on. So if you decide you want to look into getting some later on we could both approach her about it then :)

I got mine on ebay for $75. I would imagine Yvonne has a good eye though! I'd love one to make into a necklace - but not right now. Too many other things to set!

Thanks everyone for the compliments! It's actually pretty small. It looks better as a two-strand. Someday soon I'll sit down and knot it properly.
I find I'm impressed by how good it looks in artificial light - it's always catching my eye if I wear it to work.
If I did make a necklace, I'd string them with pearls, on a nice long strand so that I could see them and play with the colours! Like diamonds, movement makes all the difference.

Keep us posted if you do get one!

:) Well, then what did you want? //this is when I wish Pricescope had a PM system.

Michelle - I am looking to get a strand of the white welos. But I think if you wanted to get a different color strand, like the honey color, it would be fine, I mean we could each get what we want. Yvonne just said that you can't buy a half strand, if we each want one strand we could just each choose whatever color/type we want. As long as she is going in willing to buy at least two strands I think it's all that we would need - she just needed a minimum amount before she wanted to deal with making an appt and going in, etc. She said that last time she looked all of the strands with the smaller welos were under $100, I think most around $75 maybe? Some of this info was from a convo I had with her a few weeks ago so I can't remember all of the specifics on price. I was asking her the other day how long the strands were and she said between 14.5-16 inches I believe.

Anyway we could discuss it more with her, as I said I'm not in a rush, but if you wanted to go ahead and move on it that's also fine with me. It's not terribly pricy just for the strand, and then I'd probably have her just hold onto it for me until I decide how I want to do my necklace (I'd need to choose more beads to make it the length I want, and I'm not sure what I want to do exactly). So, there you have it ;)

I'm not sure if it's ok to post contact info on here, but if you want to talk more about it you can contact me through eBay (my ID is katharath, I have listings up so it should be easy. Then we could trade info that way. It's totally up to you, no pressure, ok? Like I said I'm easy about this, not in a rush but I also wouldn't mind going ahead with a purchase of someone is interested) :)
