Thank you to everyone on this message board. You’ve been a huge help in this process and I’m almost ready to seal the deal. I’ve narrowed it down to the final four, and I would really appreciate your opinion on which one you feel is the overall best choice.

Not good enough, HCA 2.5

1.51 Carat I-SI2 Ideal Cut Round: $8,280

Too deep for me, HCA is on cutoff point at 2

1.59 Carat J-VS2 Excellent Cut Round: $9,020

Poor HCA, eliminate immediately

1.40 Carat I-VS2 Ideal Cut Round$9,280

Too deep for me, but the HCA is ok (1.7) - just means it will face up smaller than its true weight

None of them are excellent. The last one is the best of a pretty average group. Have you seen ASET or Idealscopes for these stones? If you let us know your budget, perhaps we can find better cut quality stones for you.

The 1.51 scores a 2 on the HCA, you want under 2 ideally, but could still be good. I would just be concerned about it being eye clean due to the fact its got strong flour and that inclusion in the middle. But as you can see i have SB flour, and its not always bad
the J 1.47 scores a 2.5. not under 2 but could still work
the J 1.59 scores a 3.9 on the hca, you could do better
the I you havent put on hold scres a 1.9, it is a little too deep but is my favorite because of the color. I wonder if they would make an exception and pull that, if you let go of the J 1.59.

Not sure what your budget was, but this would be a good choice. (they give a price scope discount you just have to ask )

they vet those to make sure the flour doest have any ill effects, and it reaches tht 1.5 mark - and the flour makes to appear whiter in certain lights. I think its a great choice if you can swing it. Ive never heard anyone be disappointed in a BG blue
:) good luck in your search

I would call BGD on this diamond. Ask them if it is eyeclean, and what the price would be with the pricescope discount. I would also put it on hold right away.

great minds ;)
definitely put that on hold

If your budget can stretch to this point, it is a beautiful stone.

Wow thanks everyone for the candid feedback. I'm realizing how little I actually know about diamonds. This Brian gavin diamond looks great and I just reserved it.

Here are the specs I have in mind:
Shape: Round
Carat: 1.35 to 1.5
Cut: Ideal
Color: I
Clarity: SI1 or SI2 (eye-clean)
Setting: Solitaire in a classic setting, platinum band
Budget: $8,500 to $9,500 (just for the diamond)

The pricescope price of $9, 550 is right at the top of my budget. I'm happy to spend that if it's really worth while. Should I pull the trigger?

Neilseel, thanks for the rec! Is flour considered a good thing? And does BG blue mean that this is a special cut?

Thanks for your insight and support.

flour is good for lower colors like you are looking at, as long as it has no ill effects. The "Blue" line is a branded line of Brian Gavin stones that are vetted to have no ill effects, and only provide you wit the positive parts of flour. flour CAN make stones look milky, but again BG has the blue lines looked at to make sure it doesnt have that. So in theory, the blue acts as a whitening to your eye, making it seem whiter.

ETA im glad you reserved it. i think it looks really nice.

haha sorry for so many edits. I would tell them you are a PS'er, i do believe they will give you more of a discount, so it would probably take you under your 9500 budget.

I would pull the trigger on that as long as BG can tell you its eye clean. What setting would you be doing?

I'm planning on getting a six prong classic Solitaire.

Can I ask you guys what it is that makes the Brian gavin stand out? Sorry I'm just having a hard time differentiating between stones.

It's originally 9,850 and $9,555 with pricescope discount. I would receive additional off if I wired the money.

oh thatll be really nice in a 6 prong, BG has a nice one.

that stone is an AGS0 meaning that it has been cut for optimal light performance, other stones you've picked appear to have some issues that would make them les sthan optimal. And its not too deep like some of the other ones you picked, so it will face up larger than stones that are deeper, because those hide there ct weight in the bottom when too deep. Also it has flour that they have checked to make sure doesnt make it milky, so it can loo one or 2 shades lighter in color, depending on the lighting.
And its past the 1.5 mark and still in your budget. So as long as its eye clean that would be why I would pick it.

Agreed. This stone has been cut to very high standards - everything is lining up nicely to result in optimal light return - brilliance, fire, scintillation. The fluoro is not only cool to see under UV, it provides a nice color boost in daylight, make the stone face up whiter than its official grade (which is given from a bottom up perspective).

It will look absolutely beautiful in one of BGD's 6 claw prong settings!

The BG stone is definitely the best cut of the bunch. I liked the 1.4 I color stone except is was too deep (don't go over 62.3 or you usually lose some diameter for the weight). I think the fluorescence is a bonus with J color because it may make it appear a little whiter than it is. I normally don't go below I color, though.

Thank you all so much for your help. My girl's going to be so happy with this!

Is there any practical difference in this being AGS certified, instead of GIS? Perhaps resale value?

AGS is usually what top cuts hearts and Arrows get, because they indicate (with the AGS 0 there at the top) that they have optimal light performance. GIA doesnt have anything about light performance on there reports. Basically diamonds are sent to the reporting lab that will grade it to get the most money for the diamond. If they didnt think it could get an AGS0 they probably would have sent it to GIA, if it wouldnt have gotten a favorable GIA report they probably would have sent it to EGL, etc. AGS or GIA is really what you want to stick with , so dont worry about that lab report.

I ordered and received the Brian Gavin Blue and it looks amazing! It just has incredible brilliance and fire. It returns light perfectly.

Thank you all for such a perfect recommendation. This is exactly what I had in mind. I'll stop by the forum once in a while to say hi and try to pass on any wisdom that I've picked up along the way.

I can't stop looking at this rock!

yeah check out the pics below! I can't get over how well this diamond reflects light.

I decided to do a custom setting with a local jeweler. this diamond will go on 6 prong classic solitaire with some minor adjustments...
