interesting... how about incandescent light tho? I have seen a lot of beautiful red spinel under daylight, but it turn into an ugly garnet like under incandescent light (the real incandescent light instead of LED incandescent light).

I wonder if cobalt spinel can hold its color under incandescent light. If u want to try, you can use candle light or old incandescent light bulb

No, cobalt spinel doesn't hold that color under incandescent light. I have a 3mm one that I haven't even photographed under incandescent because the color looks so dark, I don't bother.

I believe Jedi spinel will hold its color under incandescent also. This is one of the things that can differentiate the Jedi spinel from regular red spinel.

In my pics, the top is incandescent, the bottom diffused daylight. I mean, obviously it's not as vibrant without those UV wavelengths, but neither does it look garnet-like, in my humble opinion.

There are some gemstones that are at the top of many collectors' bucket lists; out of these, which would you like to own most?!

I'll take this one you shared in another thread please.:love:

The Sunrise Ruby is my dream gemstone! It's over 25 carats and the colour is pure vivid velvety pigeons blood blood red!

At US$30 million, it will never be my budget, but one can dream!

Though if a valid choice is all the above I would happily take that and share with others. :appl:

@Cognition just received some lighter tone cobalt spinel from Yvonne Raley. Here's how the stones look under both incandescent and daylight. They're not quite so purple as what the camera picks up, but they still look OK under incandescent.

I want a cobalt spinel!!!

Cobalt Spinel from Luc Yen with a higher Cobalt content like the little ones Arkieb1 postet above hold the color in incandescent light.

The stones with a lower content shift to a pretty violet. The daylight blue is not as saturated as in the high cobalt ones.

On page 14 you find an short article...

Wow never know that cobalt spinels are actually really interesting. So i can conclude that:
1. lighter tone cobalt spinel does shift to purple
2. cobalt spinel with higher cobalt content can hold its color in any lightning condiction

Guess I know what stone too look for once this outbreak gone for good

I sometimes feel like one can never have enough of these!

The material is so limited though. I know IVY has some pieces, but the sizes and clarity are less than desirable and the prices are bonkers!

If I had screw you money, probably a Kashmir sapphire, unoiled but clean Panjshir emerald, old-mine Burmese ruby, and a strong color shift alexandrite, all in the 3-5ct range for a statament necklace. If only .....

OOF, all in the same necklace? I would be so nervous walking around with a million bucks of my neck!

The last photo above of the pear was indoors under average lighting, this is outside in the shade, the camera makes this stone look less bright and darker then it really is or what the eye sees, but I include this photo because this is closer to the actual or real colour the smaller cobalts own in low or bad lighting;

IMG_0718.jpg

But the rest of the time (80% or more of the time) the smaller or "trade Ideal" cobalts are a strong neon Cookie Monster blue that my camera falls way short of capturing. So at their worst they look like a fine mid to slightly dark vivid blue sapphire at their best they are a neon Cookie Monster blue in a colour I've only seen in rare top coloured neon Burma sapphires;

IMG_6104.JPG

I don't find any of the better coloured stones ever too dark, even the small ones, but especially the pear, it's pleasant to look at in any lighting and I'm pretty fussy. I've seen African cobalts and Burmese blue spinel darker than the best Luc Yen that are meeeh in a lot of lighting situations but the top Vietnamese material is always decent to look at regardless of any colour shifting.

Non Ideal Luc Yen colours the top stone is a darker less neon just under Royal coloured blue Cobalt, the middle is a sky blue Cobalt, and the bottom a mid purple Lavender Cobalt that flashes that Cookie Monster Blue, top pic inside under average lighting, bottom pic inside next to a window, outside in full sunlight they are paler in colour and brighter again these colour shift more than the others do;

The princess cuts are stunning!:kiss2::kiss2::kiss2::kiss2::kiss2::kiss2::kiss2:

That's a manipulated photo -- and not even a cleverly-manipulated one! Look at those pink fingers!

Shoot, you're probably right! it's not even a vendor, though. It's GIA!

I'd find a perfect blue sapphire, the little sister to Acinom's :geek2:

I was just reading that Baffin Island here in Canada has gem quality cobalt blue spinels that rival Vietnams???

Cobalt blue spinel requires very specific and violent geological conditions. Baffin Island does have some pockets of gem quality material. However, mining in the Arctic is way tougher than the tropics. However, if Canadian diamonds found an industry, I wouldn't be surprised if Canadian blue spinel found an industry as well. Good read

Brad at thegemtrader had (or has) some, it apparently needs some sort of clarity enhancement to be facet-grade (now sure how invasive)

That's the article I just read!!!

Not a fan of that! the clean ones from Vietnam are usually not true cobalt blue; they're usually colour shifting/violet blue. Clean true cobalt blue stones are almost nonexistent

They are tiny custom cut French Cuts and the cutter shattered 3 to 4 times that amount cutting them.....

I've talked to 2 x scientists and a geological/gemstone dude about the cobalts at Baffin Island they tell me it's on private land and at the moment they cannot get the stuff out of there....

Hmmmm. I wonder if they mean Crown land? Waiting for permits or it could be sensitive ecologically. I'll ask at my local University when I can, they'll know.

No idea, but they suggested that accessing it is some type of issue.
