HI:

cheers--Sharon

TAKE MY RAIN.

See our grass? It’s lush and green. The weeds are blooming. The bugs are thriving. The mud is unrepentant.

Omg. Please take my rain.

I haven't seen that much green in a long time!

This is a very interesting thread, though. Before this, I hadn't thought about how to save water. I already don't shower every day and I save up huge loads of laundry to be done once every 2-3 weeks, and I have quite short showers. I guess I could ensure I turn off the faucet during teeth-cleaning and face-washing, and do the "if it's yellow let it mellow" thing, which skeeves me out more than a little but makes sense.

When I boil the electric kettle for a cup of tea, I only boil what I need, instead of boiling the whole kettle.

Someone mentioned putting a brick in the cistern. My toilet is already pretty low-flush, I think. Would the brick thing hamper it's flushing ability? Does anyone know?

If I do the brick thing and remember to turn off those faucets while washing, I think I would be at peak water savings. I don't have a yard or plants, so saving the shower water in a bucket wouldn't help. I guess I could use it to flush the toilet though.

the brick thing is promoted here for people with older cistins

i did an experiment in the shower tonight and took in a bucket to see how much water im using per minute

i often shove in the plug so i can keep an eye on how much water im using

who has that infinity hot water that is heated by gas bottles outside ?
ours is by the kitchen window but it takes ages for the hot water to reach the bathroom. i brush my teeth in the time i wait for the shower to heat up

It's so dry here already. The grass is crispy and we are letting it go dormant. Hubby put up a rain barrel for when it does rain again. A couple years back I created some tiny ponds in the backyard for the birds and critters. They are getting a lot of use this spring.

We fitted 2 water butts recently, and use the water from them to water the plants. We have had an unusual amount of rain lately, so have gone from Stage 4 to Stage 3 again.

We've never been under an official water limit as far as I know but water bill is super expensive for us. We will absolutely wear clothes more than once as long as they're not soiled. We wash our clothes in a super tiny efficient washer on light mode unless they're truly dirty. When they are we make sure to soak with detergent long before washing so they don't need so many rinses. We don't flush for #1. We're all very efficient with showers. Our "grass" is minimal and is all mixed with clover so it's very efficient. Everything else is rocks and easy care bushes. Our roses thrive on neglect. Done.

I broke down today. After 5 weeks of no rain we have 1/4 inch predicted tonight and nothing for the rest of the week. My fruit trees are showing the stress with yellowing leaves, I already lost one arborvitae tree and I lost a huge limb of my cherry tree and everything basically looks miserable. We had drought conditions late summer into the fall last year.

I am dumping over 2k gallons of water on the trees and I started this morning. I just can't stand the thought of losing my lingering Ash tree that has survived the emerald ash borer and is the only Ash tree I have seen for miles and miles. Or my 60 foot pines, Black Gum trees and other trees.

I am leaving the grass dormant.

i have to ask
what is a water butt ?

Our new rain barrel has been set up and today after yesterday's rain I used that water for the houseplants, bird bath and tiny ponds. :)

I'm afraid this thread will be useful this year too as we are already a bit short on rain and it is still "springish" here. Not sure what the true summer will bring. So let's keep the suggestions coming.

I just wanted to say, I am still with you (in solidarity) for you not washing your floor.

We put in a rainwater tank. My garden is very important to me. It uses the a drip irrigation from the rainwater tank.
