Happy Saturday!

What do you all think about a 4 carat E color diamond with faint fluorescence? Would I be able to see a slight blue tint or haziness since the color grade is very high? I’ve read that the faint grading is almost the same as the “none” grading.

Also, would the faint fluorescence grading make the diamond significantly less desirable on the resale market? Would it impact the price of it significantly?

Faint is not an issue. I'd personally buy an E with strong blue because of the pricing. Plus I think fluorescence is a beautiful natural phenomenon. You can't usually see it unless it's under UV lighting, and you'd hardly see any with faint even under UV lighting. I had a stone for 25 years with medium fl and didn't even know it had it until I took it to a jeweler because I was thinking of a new setting! It shouldn't affect resale pricing any more than it affects the price you are paying initially, I would think.

Faint UV fluorescence is pretty much a meaningless difference from no UV fluorescence. Medium or more UV fluorescence is certainly a consumer's choice to like or not like the effect of the UV reaction. Dealers, on the other hand tend to want simplicity and nothing to stand in the way of rapid inventory turnover. Many dealers will not purchase medium or more UV florescent diamonds although it is increasingly apparent that there is a market for them with some dealers and many more well informed consumers. Over time, the prejudice against UV fluorescence has somewhat diminished inside the diamond trade because dealers are reactive to consumer demand opportunities.

I have worn a highly fluorescent diamond myself for the past 25 years which I find unusual in appearance and strangely attractive. I like the nearly hazy purplish blue color it turns in strong sunlight. It is the Blue Haze effect of Jimmy Hendrix and the late 1960''s right on my finger.

For those who are buying a diamond to wear and enjoy, you buy what YOU love. For those who look at diamonds as a financial tool, you need to buy what dealers and the majority of consumers would prefer. That may differ from your own taste in diamonds. Business is not the same as buying for yourself, or course.
